  1. Agreed....I kept imagining my own child...and being horrified at the situation.
  2. Oh yeah...because I like low cost fishing (yes, I'm a cheap dude....LOL), I dont buy that silicone tubing to secure the boilie in place. We have a bag of about ohh...a thousand elastic bands. I simply cut it so it's one long piece and then thread it thru and tie a knot...then trim the excess. Works great for me.
  3. That's too funny Steve...I think because bly and I are used to night fishing, we may have a certain knack for it. It's not completely dark where we are, so I basically just follow which way the line is going out...if it breaks the surface, I can usually see it. As far as making it fair for the Carp...LOL...I'll take my luck as I can get it!! I'm sure the bite will stop soon enough and I'll be skunked my share of times....once they figure out what we are doing..hehe.
  4. Here's one of the best illustrations I've seen...actually...looks easier than the ones I tie myself! http://www.anglersnet.co.uk/carp/hair_rig.htm Good luck!
  5. Great pics once again! I'll always remember that trip to that area...even if it was 30 years ago!
  6. Great report! Congrats on your first Bowfin too...I've seen them swimming around, but have never caught one myself. Despite the weather, you had a good day out there...looking forward to more posts. Oh yeah, your pic came thru perfectly!
  7. My oldest daughter is at a camp in the Haliburton area and it's parent's day this coming Saturday. The weather is looking pretty good and since our 5 year old loves to fish, we thought we'd make a mini fishing trip out of it for her. The camp is in the hwy 35 and hwy 118 area so any lake along the way would be great. We'd be looking for shore spots, with hopefully lots of panfish so our little one isn't too bored. Some bigger fish would be great too for when bly and I have a chance to cast out a little. Any suggestions would be great...not looking for secret spots, just a spot for the little one to pull in some fish. PM if you dont want to post details on the board please. Looking at a map, it looks like we'll be passing the following lakes.... West side of Sturgeon Lake Between Balsam and Cameron Lake...across the Trent Canal Shadow Lake Gull Lake Twelve Mile Lake Boshkung Lake Thanks everyone!!!
  8. The great thing about fishing is that no matter what the conditions, your next cast could bring in your new personal best!! Good on you and Lew getting out there and trying...it sure beats sitting at home wondering if this was going to be your day. Better luck next time!
  9. Joey...congrats to you too...this board simply wouldn't be the same without you!!!
  10. LOL...now THAT'S a hilarious fishing story!! Glad to hear you got your fishing rod back though. WOuld have been classic if it was on video...looking foward to the pics....haha.
  11. LOL...I swear last night none of them were there. Guess they fixed their site. When I go to my account however, it says I have no entries...hopefully they can fix that. Would be a good idea for members to check to make sure though. Thanks fishinonthebrain!

  13. Hello all, I know that many here submit their fish pics for the OFAH Angler Awards at www.ontarioanglerawards.com I went there last night to submit a new fish and none of my previous entries were there. There is a note on the site that said because of email and technical issues, please resubmit anything that you've sent in the past 3 weeks. They say 3 weeks, but none of my entries are there...and some go back to January of this year. If you are in the OFC Tourney, be sure to re-submit!!! Cliff
  14. Hey Smokey...congrats on the milestone!! It's great to see veteran members of the board still posting...guys like me learn a lot from guys like you! Good luck this summer....and I hope you still find the time to post a report or two!
  15. LOL GCD...the closer we get to the Lakair G2G, the more I question if I really want to meet you or not.... See you there!!!
  16. I too can handle another Nipissing report since I'll be heading to Lakair in a few short weeks for the first time! Congrats on your walleye...those are some FAT perch too! You made the best out of a not-so-perfect situation and had a great time at it. That's what it's all about! Congrats!
  17. The first time I tried carp fishing I did use corn in roe bags...tied them about quarter size. It worked for us for exactly one night. LOL. That night there were literally hundreds of them in a pretty small area...and I think we were pretty lucky. That being said I've seen a few guys catching them with just corn on their hooks, so attaching a spawning bag should work just as well....and make your bait last longer. I stopped using corn/roe bags on a hook because of all the pesky bullhead that would take it. Once I switched to boilies, I started getting them on a more regular basis....and again, once I added the spring feeder and ground bait mix, my percentages went up even further. The spring feeders were around 2 bucks from the local tackle store and the ingredients for the mix cost me 12 dollars from Bulk Barn. I still haven't used up the original batch. Oh yeah...if you know how to snell a hook, you can tie your own hair rigs. I make the "pulled through" part longer so I can tie a loop for the rig. Good luck!
  18. LOL...thanks! Your reply almost made me spit out my drink....LOL. That was a hilarious reply...thanks for that. BTW....I think maybe H2whoa! hid your cake....check with her!!!
  19. Great report!!! Glad to hear that the camera wasn't a jinx. I wish I fished more during the day...pictures turn out so much better...that walleye in the water shot was really cool. Looked like you had a great day out there...and worked hard for the fish you did get
  20. Ok...bly just showed me this thread... That is one of the funniest things I've ever seen!!! Gotta sign him up for football now!! Tell Evan congrats from bly and I...those are some nice Bluegills!!!
  21. Thank you everyone for your very kind words. It's a real pleasure for me to part of such a great community!! And Joey...as far as All Knowing Angler is concerned....I'm FAR from that. We're just out there having fun...that's it....if it wasn't fun then what's the point right?
  22. LOL...you are right!!! I need an intervention I think...OFC anonymous!!!
  23. I'm not trying to boost my post count...haha...I actually did catch these fish tonight...and apparently missed an interesting thread!! Anyhow, our built-in babysitter is away at camp for the next week and a half, so I wasn't sure how much fishing I'd get done. I'm so used to fishing with Bly, that it never really entered my mind to fish by myself tonight. After we put our little one to bed, Bly said "If you want to go out, by all means go....I feel the urge to go, so I figure you must too!!". She's the best wife ever!!! haha. I got the winter gear out because it was a blistering 7 degrees out there!! LOL. Earlier today, Nipissing mentioned that the water temps in his area dropped DRASTICALLY from this extreme cold front that came through. Now, I know that cold fronts are usually not great for fishing, but I had a thought. I wondered if the drastic change in water temp might knock the Carp off of spawning temporarily and get them feeding again. The spot I went to tonight has been very quiet as of late...a few skunks, but I knew they were there. Anyhow, I got there later than usual...at about 9pm...I gave myself 1 hour to test my theory. I threw my line out to the spot that usually produces and waited. I didn't have to wait long!!! A carp after 10 minutes, took my bait and the fight began!! Bly is usually with me, so I wasn't sure I'd land it with a net. It took me about 15 minutes to land....I put the net out there and got it!! It was HUGE by my standards...a new personal best at 37" and weighing in at 24 pounds!! Here's the pic....and another OFC Tourney entry! I only had enough chum with me for 3 casts...so that was the first one. I quickly threw my line back out there and within about 10 minutes, I felt a few line bumps...then it got quiet. Still, at least there were line bumps! I brought it back in because my feeder was empty. I then put the last of my ground bait on the spring feeder and cast it back out. It was now 9:50pm and I gave myself 10 minutes...my fingers were getting numb from the cold. Right at 10pm, line started peeling from my reel and I landed this little guy...a 27" 10 pounder. This one, even though was smaller was really tough to get into the net...it was pitch dark out and I didn't have the luxury of Bly there with the net and flash light to net him. Anyhow, that's it for today...my theory seemed to work....too bad these EXTREME cold fronts during spawning season are very few and far between!!!
  24. WOW!!! A 28 pounder as her first?? That's awesome! Looks like you're taking a liking to carping...kinda gets addicting if you dont have a lot of opportunity to fish for stuff larger than a sunfish or perch. Congrats on another successful outing...looking forward to more reports!!
  25. Sweet pics Mike! Good on you wearing your OFC hat too!!
