  1. Wow...what a great report Jen! They caught some jumbos that's for sure!!! Your kids will grow up remembering all this quality time you've spent with them...and they are likely to pass it down to their own kids one day. Wish my mom took me fishing....LOL. Thanks for the pics and report!
  2. Wolfville - Thanks for a great evening! Even though we didn't catch anything, it was still great to sit and chat. Thanks for the use of your equipment too...having the bite alarm was very strange for me...I'm still used to using my finger...LOL. Thanks for being a great net man when landing that seagull...wish we had taken a picture or two for the gallery!! We'll definately get together again soon....and we should also plan a Peterborough trip with some of the other carpers on the board later in the summer...would be great to have a G2G!! Oh yeah....thanks for picking up that carp gear for bly and I...I almost ate a peach boilie or two...they smelled great...LOL. Jen - It wasn't until our successful release that we thought we should have taken a pic or two!!! Oh well...next time! Victor - I measured the seagull, went home and was VERY disappointed that it didn't count toward my avid angler status on OFAH. Oh well...still need one more species!!! haha. Photoz - Wolfville was telling me about your encounter with swan after I caught that seagull...sounded like an interesting fight!!! LOL. Hope all went well yesterday for you! MJL - We were sitting and chatting...I noticed the seagull flying low to the water, searching for baitfish to dive bomb. My alarm went off and I knew right away the bird got caught. He didn't go airborn unless I let slack go into the line. When it became evident that he was too tangled to get free by himself, and I reeled in, he couldn't fly. Wolfville carefully unwrapped our feathered friend and it flew away immediately! Funny thing though, once that happened, we didn't see another seagull anywhere near us for the rest of the night....haha. As far as carp action was concerned there was very little. Funny how a swim can be teaming with them one night and then not be there the next. I had plenty of line bumps, and Wolfville had one taker, but no hook set. We'll get into them soon though!!!
  3. Amazing pics. The Northern Lights are a wonderful phenomenon. I've seen them down here in Southern Ontario, but I've always had to strain to see them. Must be amazing to see them like in those pics!
  4. Thanks for the info! We haven't tried there yet....we're still discovering just how many spots there are within a 20 minute drive of our house. I'm sure we'll give it a try one of these days. So...boat launch...if there are panfish there too then we can take our little one there and try this daylight fishing thing...LOL. Her for panfish and bly and I for carp......
  5. I was fishing the shores of Lake Ontario last night. I shone the flashlight after it was dark and the amount of pollen in the air was unbelievable! It was almost like it was snowing out there. There was a yellow film on the water where we were fishing. I guess I know why my allergies have been acting up in the past 3 or 4 days.
  6. Proud member of Cubs....3rd Ajax back in the 70's. We used to go camping at Camp Samac in Oshawa...I still remember getting my cooking badge....I had to cook dinner for my whole family. My poor poor family....LOL.
  7. We've seen lots of rolling and splashing...this was different...on very active nights it goes on for hours. What we saw last night was indeed very strange. Picture this...you're fishing....the line is in the water...no wind....water smooth as glass. There was no activity that we could see. Suddenly...in an flash I saw all those carp jumping at the exact same time...one jump...that was it. It was surreal. They didn't come completely out of the water, but I'd say at least 1/2 their body was out of the water. Then as quickly as that started it was over....water smooth as glass again. As far as them coming right out of the water, we've seen it a few times...completely out of the water. The one last night, while bly was fighting it, it completely took us by surprise. I think it was confused and thought it was a steelhead!!! LOL.
  8. WOOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! LAKAIR!!!! Can you tell I'm looking forward to it??
  9. Ever since Wolfville began fishing our regular fishing hole, it seems that bly and I cant catch Carp in that spot!!! I put the blame soley on him!!! j/k It does seem the evening bite has been off there so we were looking for a new spot to fish. We shine a bright light in the water every night as we are leaving, and the Carp seems to have left the building at night. Basskicker tipped me off to a great little spot....that hardly anyone knows about, so we decided to try and find it! It's off the beaten path and about a kilometer away from where you park, but hey...we walk a LOT more on the tribs....haha. It was very hot and humid last night and by the time we reached a spot that looked good, sweat was already running down my face....I was also bitten by mosquitoes during that little walk. Didn't matter...we wanted to see what the fishing was going to be like! Our feeders were loaded with ground bait...and our lines were in the water by 8:20pm. We could see all kinds of activity around, so we were hopeful. About 5 minutes later, Bly yells fish on....but lost it after a short time. She threw her line back out there waited. We could both feel line bumps so again, we knew they were there. At 8:50pm, Bly yells "Fish On" again, and this time it's a good hook set! It took about 10 minutes to land our first fish of the night. Here's a nice 31.5 inch, 15 pounder. Kinda strange that there is still daylight in the pic....LOL I was hoping that soon it would be my turn to catch one! I didn't have to wait too long. At around 9:20pm, I had one on and began my fight. I could feel this was a little one...only took about 5 minutes to bring in this respectable 30", 13 pounder. Ahh, that's better a picture in the dark....LOL. The mosquitoes were coming out like crazy!! Even though we had bug spray on, we had to keep batting them away from our faces, so we decided to pack up and leave at about 9:45. Long walk back to the car and when we sat down I said "You ready to go home yet?". Her quick reply was "NO!!", so we headed to our usual spot to see if the carp were in the area. By 10pm, our lines were back in the water. Ok...this is a very cool/strange thing that happened. (insert Twilight Zone music here). Now, we've seen carp jumping out of the water before...lots of them in fact, but what happened next left us speechless. At around 10:15 we were both looking out over the water when suddenly about 15 to 20 carp jumped out of the water at the exact same time....all in the same area (about 20 yards). When I say this, I dont mean it happened over the span of 5 or 10 seconds....I mean at EXACTLY the same second!!! It reminded me of when researches put an electrical shock in the water and suddenly all the fish jump. We couldn't figure out what would make them do that....when they get to a certain size, there are no real predators...we've seen some big pike in the waters there but the carp just ignore them. Anyone have any ideas what would cause them to do this? At least we knew the carp were back...and we knew exactly where they were hanging out!! We both cast our lines in that general area and we had LOTS of line bumps and pulls. We knew that there had to be at least one more fish to be had. We normally fish until 1030 or 1100 during the week since I have to be up early in the morning for work. At around 11pm, Bly yells "fish on" again! This put up a really nice fight...ended up being the biggest fish of the night, coming in at 35" and 21 pounds. Well...that was our evening. Things are back to normal now! Our oldest is back from camp so we were able to fish together again for the first time in a week and a half. Our skunks were short lived and as usual, Bly outfished me....both in numbers and in heaviest fish!! LOL. Those jumping fish....man....strange indeed! PS....Thanks Basskicker for the great spot! I'm going to have try it out during the day sometime....when the mosquitoes aren't so bad!!!
  10. I'm not questioning what you said...Photoz said something about lurkers...you my friend are FAR from being a lurker....LOL.
  11. Skunkitis!!!! I hear you!!! It's been real hit and miss lately...but even on the miss nights, I still manage one. Last night was a complete skunk....and in my report you'll see that an actual skunk visited me...talk about a sign...LOL.
  12. I hear plasma and LCDs are on sale at Futureshop and Best Buy......and...Father's day IS just around the corner.....LOL
  13. Wow...great suggestions guys....now....gotta think here....who's going to lakair and is maybe trying to sabotage me....LOL.
  14. Bly and I will be up at Lakair in 10 days!!! This will be the furthest north we've fished...actually, anywhere north of Lake Scugog fits this bill!! LOL. We want to be prepared for when we fish with Nipissing on Saturday for the Pike Tourney. We have some things, but just wondering what the experts out there think.... We have: A few Husky Jerks Assorted Crank Baits A few Spinnerbaits A bunch of plastics Leaders Any other suggestions...or colours choices? Thanks....cant wait to get up there!!!!! PS. I was going to get put this on the pinned Lakair thread, but didn't want to hijack it...there's some hilarious stuff in there!!!
  15. Sunfish...welcome to the board! I too am recently back into fishing and purchased my first baitcaster myself. They are not easy to learn that's for sure! I figured out how NOT to get birdsnests, I just have no distance to it right now. I'm a little paranoid about them, so I find I thumb the spool to much....haha. Just have to get out there and practise....twist my arm!!! LOL
  16. Sunfish...you are correct...it's the 4th Saturday in June..... Maida....welcome to the board! You'll find this a very informative site...congrats on the house north of Whitby. It's a great central location to lots of fishing spots....I live in Whitby myself.
  17. Hey there malonzi! You've stumbled the best fishing messagebaord on the net! I've lived in the Toronto area my whole life and never once fished the Toronto Islands. Met up with a fellow board member and had a blast out there....even caught a pike. I've never been to Tommy Thompson, but hopefully someone will chime in here and help you out. Good fishing! Cliff
  18. I have many memories of Grand Bend and Ipperwash as a teenager....or is it that I've been there many times and cant remember most of what happened??? LOL Such a fine line.
  19. Oh great...just when I find a BIG fish I can target from shore in the summer months close by my house, this carpicide is being developed!!! I find it hard to believe too....seems a bit extreme....the MNR has no money anways to fund something like this. That being said, this is a government agency we are talking about here...they never cease to amaze and confuse me!!!!
  20. Wow...this has really got to suck!!! I think I'm gonna need a bigger net if I visit down there!!! ======================================================================== http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070612/ap_on_...LNvba6bTdehOrgF Jumping sturgeon injures woman in Fla. Tue Jun 12, 7:10 AM ET ROCK BLUFF, Fla. - A woman was injured over the weekend by a leaping sturgeon, the latest incident involving the flying fish on the Suwannee River, officials said. Tara Spears, 32, of Bell, was knocked unconscious by the animal on Sunday while boating on the river north of Rock Bluff, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reported. She was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and was expected to recover, the agency reported. The large, prehistoric-looking sturgeon have hard plates along their backs. They can grow up to 8 feet long and up to 200 pounds. In April, a leaping sturgeon severely injured a 50-year-old woman from St. Petersburg who was riding a personal watercraft on the Suwannee River. She suffered a ruptured spleen and had three fingers reattached by surgeons, but she lost her left pinkie finger and a tooth.
  21. Congrats!!! Wonderful looking family you have there!!
  22. WOW!!! I'd be happy with a fish half...no...a quarter that size!!! Great report and pics...hopefully we'll hook into some later in the summer!
  23. I thought the thread was about this!!!
  24. As of late, we've had people on the board ask if Bly and I ever get skunked. Bly posted a skunk report yesterday afternoon and now it's my turn!!! At least she saw a cool turtle...I saw NOTHING....haha. I set up for Carp in my normal spot, but was concerned that I saw NO activity at all from them. I tossed my line in for about an hour and a half and NOTHING. Not even a line bump. One time I threw my line WAAAAYYY out there and I somehow had the biggest birds nests I've ever seen!!! LOL...must have had to cut about 60 yards off my spool. I then decided to change spots and I moved to a spot on the opposite side. I was still close enough to where I parked that I could see my car. About 5 minutes of waiting there I look over to my old spot and what do I see? A SKUNK sauntering by where I was just sitting!! I should have just packed up and left at that point...it was a sign from the fishing gods for sure! But no...I stayed for another hour and half....had a few line bumps and one taker, but no hook set. Oh well...thinking of trying a different local spot....had a tip that carp heaven was close by...will report later tonight....
  25. Wait a minute...she caught fish...she just WANTED to post a skunk report....LOL. It happens to us all bly...maybe I'll be skunked tonight....bet you I dont get to see a cool turtle though...haha.
