Weekend at Bernie's - Sept 2014 Edition

Mike...that was hilarious! Hilarious and accurate! Rubin...we did miss you up there! We almost called you to gloat. Lol -
The time has come and gone for our weekend at Bernie's. As always, a great time was had by all! This year's cast included Will, Joe, Mike and myself. We met at my place at 9ish am for the drive up. With all the rain in the forecast, we were racing against time to get to the launch and try to get to the island before all our stuff got soaked! We skipped our usual lunch in Powassan and headed straight to the launch. The rain was half way across the lake and we knew we'd be close!! We launched the boat quickly and Will and I took off to the island while Bernie picked the other two up at the boathouse. As it turned out, the rain quickly dissipated over the lake and we made it there no problem. The 10-15mm of rain turned into NOTHING!! At least when the weatherman got this wrong it was to our benefit!! With the weather clearing, we decided to hit the lake for some bonus fishing time! Here's Bernie, Joe and Mike... We caught a lot of walleye this size over the weekend... I got the big fish of the day....although the wrong species. I think they caught a fish or two as well....hopefully they have a few pics to add! Not to be outfished, Joe had to prove he could catch his favourite species as well.... We headed back and began talking about dinner. We chatted a bit about how well we eat when we are there and Bernie says "Chicken isn't my favourite". Mike looks up and buries his head in his hands and says "Damn...I brought chicken for tonight" LOL With that cloud over our heads, we got through dinner and were treated to an amazing sunset. Later that evening we relaxed and chatted by the fire. The next morning we got up bright and early and hit the water by 10ish....LOL. No big fish, but we had a good time with the walleye and perch! That afternoon Mike, Will and I headed back out and decided to try for some bass and pike. Mike with a monster... Will (AKA Nighthawk), with a great largie! Mike with another monster...with Will being a smarta$$ in the background... We headed back in for a steak dinner and decided to try for the night bite. Again, lots of little guys, but I did manage one nice one! Another great sunset...every time I went to snap a picture, I'd miss a hit!! haha The next morning we hit the water for a few hours before we had to pack up and leave. It always turns out that the best day of the weekend is the day we leave!! Will caught a nice one that last morning... Then he caught a surprising sucker! LOL We headed back for some lunch and then packed up. I found this guy checking out the firepit area... Another great chapter in the Weekend at Bernie's story...as always we have a lot of laughs, a few fish and an amazing relaxing weekend. Thanks again Bernie!!

I joined back in 2006 and it's been a second home for me! I've met some very good friends because of this community. I even wrote a song about it once...

Walleye Fishing with Big Cliff: The Report
ccmtcanada replied to manjo39's topic in General Discussion
Cliff is a so-so walleye guide. Once he took me out and I caught a Muskie. Lol -
How far will you drive for a day of fishing?
ccmtcanada replied to thegrumpyfisherman's topic in General Discussion
The longest day for me was leaving my home in Whitby at 2am...driving to Mike Boeger's place and then driving to Pennsylvania for a day of steel heading. First drift was about 730-8am. Off the river by 3, hit the border and then home to Whitby again at 9pm. Was a looooong day but well worth it! -
The "smallest" Muskie you've caught up there beats my pb by 2". I don't feel sorry for you!!! Lol Glad to hear you for the skunk off your back Lew!!

How did you come up with your forum handle here? NF, maybe.

CMT are my initials. Just added a c in front because 3 characters weren't enough. I used to be ccmtcanada but dropped the Canada after a few years. -
Love the look on Dad's face in that second picture. Sort of that "Don't mess with me son...I'm still your father" look! LOL Most important thing is the memories of that trip...and fishing with your dad. And BTW....that is one awesome bass!!

Now that's a great way to spend a Tuesday! Excellent report and some great fish!

For the past few years, I head up to my cousin's cottage up on Paudash Lake. We were up there this past Monday to Thursday and although the weather was cool, we still had a blast!! It turns out that my little boat can pull a tube just fine....my daughter and her friend wanted to do this every chance they got!! So the girls decided to fish off the dock for a bit. Using and ultralight rod, my daughter tips the hook with a tiny 1/4" piece of worm. The goal was to catch the smallest fish possible so they could put them in a little container. A few minutes later I hear "Daddy!! Come and help!!". I figure I need to put another worm on, but as I get closer I see her rod going crazy and she's all excited! I look over the edge of the dock and saw a huge bass going crazy!! With no net around, I reach in and grab it's bottom lip. Just as I do this, the hook pops out and I saw that the hook was straightened! This was a GREAT fish and by far her PB!! After she catches that fish, they moved to the other dock to look for smaller fish again... LOL. I throw on a senko and cast out towards a weed bed that's just off the dock. I retrieve it and as it gets to the dock I let it sit there for a few seconds. All of the sudden, another bass that was sitting under there grabs the senko and it goes crazy! I woke up early every morning and was on the water by 6am....while the girls slept in til at least 9 every morning! Nothing like having your morning coffee on the boat in this setting.... I ended up catching lots of fish around this size.... But also got some nicer ones... Also got this surprising smallie! One morning I saw something odd coming at me so I snapped this picture.... It went straight under the boat and then popped to the surface! It then decided to follow me all around the bay! I've never had that happen before and it was definitely pretty cool Another great visit in the books! Wish I had a cottage on a great bass lake!!

Underwater shots are amazing, but I especially love this one!! Really looking forward to finally getting out on the water with you tomorrow!
-
That's terrible news. You have a big heart and I know yours is hurting right now. My condolences Cliff.
-
For toothy critters I will use titanium leaders. They are thinner than steel and don't crimp after fighting a fish.
-
Nothing wrong with that kind of day! Nice going guys!
-
Somebody get this young man his own magazine! Unbelievable shots Mike!
-
Wow G! Fantastic news! Congrats to all of you on your new fishing partner!
-
Lew. Sounds like a great trip! And you are right, don't need to catch fish for a good time fishing. I hear you on the weeds...I said something last week I thought I'd never say..... While fishing on Scugog I couldn't find the weeds.....haha

Wow!! It's amazing how much damage can occur in a few short seconds isn't it? I hope the clean up goes well! I was on an overpass in Pickering years ago. I was stopped at a red light with the 401 beside me. All of the sudden the clouds turned green and I said "uh oh!". The micro burst hit...my car was hit broad side by it and actually started to lean it towards the guard rail. I peered over the rail at the 401 below and for a split second I thought I was going over! A few road signs were ripped from the pavement and flew by my car...narrowly missing me but hitting the guy in front of me. After it was all over, people got out of their cars....palms up and shoulders shrugging. No one was hurt thankfully, but it was incredible the power of the wind. I found out later on the news that it was a microburst.

Fishnsled and I headed out this morning to fish. Once again we didn't know where we were actually going until we hit the road! After much debate over a coffee and breakfast while on the road, we decided on hitting Lake Scugog. Now this isn't my favourite lake, but with the wind forecast, this seemed like the right lake for us. Thankfully the winds were 15k + gusts, or we'd have been roasted off the lake! It was a bit tough fishing in the windy conditions, but we did manage to pull a few fish from the bog. First, Fishnsled was up...landing this small guy... The bite was very slow...carp were rolling around everywhere in the shallows and we had a hard time finding feeding bass. I was getting a little tired so I sat down, put my feet up and ended up catching this little guy... Around 11am...I'm throwing a senko into the lily pads when all of the sudden I feel what may be a weed...may be a fish. I set the hook anyways and I was rewarded with some weight and a huge splash out in the weeds! After running under the boat and horsing it back out, I was rewarded with what I think is my new PB. It weighed in just shy of 5 pounds. The bite once again slowed down and I managed just one more fish. The winds and heat finally got the best of us and we were off the water at about 2pm. All in all yet another great day on the water. Getting a nice fish is always a bonus!!
