Not a hoax....the news story he quoted is from the CBC.... http://www.cbc.ca/technology/story/2008/08/18/chip-fish.html Here's what a healthy one looks like....

Groundsheets are a good idea...just make sure the borders of it are inside the edges or water from rain can get trapped between the sheet and the tent. I don't believe that any nylon tent/fly combination is ever 100% waterproof in heavy wind and rain. I've had high end tents that are great in one rainstorm and have leaks in another....all depends on the duration of the rain and how strong the wind is. If rain is an issue, bring a large tarp to put over your tent...just tie it to nearby trees and use poles to support if necessary....added insurance to keep your stuff dry.

Petticoat Creek Conservation Area
ccmtcanada replied to Anton Kanagasuntheri's topic in General Discussion
Check out this document.... http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/STEL02_163569.pdf There is a section for Petticoat creek....looks like only creek chub and suckers are prevalent there, with the occasional bass and panfish opportunities. Trout are seasonal....probably a bit early for those. Good luck. -
My boat and motor only cost $1200.....add 800 for a brand new trailer and you're on the water. There are deals to be had out there! Start simple, until you know exactly what you want down the road.

Nice fish! Weight?? Hmmmm..... I'd say you are about 140 pounds...maybe 145 tops. The fish is likely around 4 to 5 pounds. That's a nice sized walleye for the Kawarthas....for the big lakes (Ontario, Erie, Bay of Quinte) larger ones are quite common. Congrats on your first....it's a great one no matter what the weight was.

Our first watercraft was a 14' canoe....donated by fellow OFNer Basskicker....we use it for small marshes, or protected bays where no boat launches are nearby. We got this in the summer of 2007. Our first ever fishing boat (bought in Oct of 2007) is a 1983 14' Sea Nymph, with a 1983 Merc 18hp. Truth be told though....our biggest fish have been caught from shore....probably because we are still learning to fish from a boat....or maybe it's cause we just suck at it....LOL.

Love these posts!!! Congrats to your little guy on his first....the smile and wonderment of it all is priceless. He's shaping up to be a lifelong fishing partner for you.

Great report! The great thing about catching a pike that sized for your first one, is that PB's will come pretty quickly!!

Thanks all....it's fun exploring a new lake and trying new things to get the fish to cooperate. Having our best friends with us just made it even better. -

LOL...thanks Joey...my hand is in an inappropriate place....and it seems she's enjoying it....hehe. -
Will...what a fantastic vacation! You sure packed a lot into the time you had up there. It even looked like Di enjoyed herself as well....LOL. Those notes from those kids are just priceless....when they appreciate things enough to put that kind of effort into letting you know, then you know you've made a positive influence on them. Great scenery, great people (that's cool about the Duff thing), and great times....just what vacations are supposed to be!

ccmtcanada replied to solopaddler's topic in General Discussion
Wow Mike....was this the back lake we were thinking of trying out? At any rate, the fishing looked phenomenal! Awesome pics...some of that scenery was just breathtaking. I got your message about your place, but Bly and I were up in Magnetawan this past weekend....we didn't do nearly as good as you guys did though...LOL. Thanks for the invite....but we'll try for another time to head up that way...I'm thinking that back lake would be a great destination....haha. Awesome stuff...congrats....that underwater pic is amazing....I've saved it here on my computer!! -
I've learned a lot from Shawn over the past few years as well! Congrats on a great day on the water....kudos to Shawn as well!!

Great report Will! I love it how you said YOU wanted to get Remo something, so Di made something for him....LOL. Great work on the embroidering! Looked like you had a blast out there, with some nice fish as well. Now that you've caught you PB fishing rod/reel, are you going to have it mounted???

Great report Joey! You guys have been doing great this year....from the Niagara steelhead reports to all your great ice reports, they are continuing this summer on the soft water. Some real pretty fish there! Awesome looking spinnerbait too! You'll have to post your first fish on it!

YIKES!!!! WHAT A MONSTER FISH!!!! Congrats on a PB...I'd settle for one half that size. Wow...must have been an adrenaline rush for sure.
-
OUCH!!! Sorry to hear about your son, but it sounds like he was a real trooper about it all. Nothing is worse for a parent then seeing your kids in pain like that! Then the motor thing....wow...when it rains it pours eh? Hopefully it's a inexpensive fix for you. Better luck the next time!!!

Congrats and welcome to the board! Gotta love it when toothy critters like that are caught from shore. Great job....and I look forward to more reports.

Awesome!!! I'll have to get the issue and read it! After reading his reports, it doesn't surprise me in the least. I'm waiting for the made for TV moving starring Moosebunk!!! Congrats Drew! :clapping:

Well, our annual camping trip with our friends has come and gone. These times always pass by too quickly, and this year was no exception. This was the 18th consecutive year the same core group of friends has made it up there. Others have come and gone over the years, but there is about 8 of us that have always made the trip. Apart from about a 15 minute downpour on Friday and while we were packing up this morning, it was a sunny and warm weekend. Anyhow, we made it up there around 1:00pm on Thursday. We dropped the boat at a local resort to have it slipped for the time we were up there for. We then headed to my buddy's place to set up our tent and get things all ready. We headed up back to the boat to scope out the lake and wet a line for about an hour to get an idea where we'd like to fish the next morning. Friday morning at 6am, we were awake...a 5 minute drive to the boat and we were on the water. The fog from the morning was just lifting....it was quite a beautiful sight. Since this is a deep lake (40 to 60 feet), and we are not really equipped or knowledgeable in fishing those kinds of lakes, we decided to stick mainly to bays, drop-offs near shore and around rock points. We picked up a few small pike and bass....around this size.... This rockbass inhaled a 4" senko! We headed in just after lunch as the bite turned off. We sat on the porch in the afternoon and caught up with friends, and sing a few songs. Here's an excerpt of Teach Your Children (Graham Nash) that I'm singing with a friend. <embed width="320" height="240" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" src="http://i120.photobucket.com/player.swf?file=http://vid120.photobucket.com/albums/o185/ccmtcanada/adefest%202008/DSCN7562.flv"> After dinner, we headed outside for a campfire...the mosquitoes all weekend long were pretty much non existent....what a bonus!!! Saturday morning, our friend Cory came out with us. We were on the water around 8am and tried a different area of the lake....again sticking to shallower bay areas and off rockpoints and dropoffs close to shore. Here's a few fish from the morning.... We were back again at around 1pm and after lunch, we started in on the "work" portion of the weekend. The task was to paint all the exterior window frames of my buddy's cabin. It took a while to prep and paint everything, but we got it all done. After dinner, Bly and I headed back out on the lake to see what the evening bite was like. There was a great sunset that night..... We didn't hook into a lot of fish, but Bly managed a nice perch, and I pulled a real nice smallie out of a rock pile and weeds. The release.... Sunday, we were out there again in the morning....nice and sunny too! We managed a few bass and small pike...all around this size. Saw this interesting sight as well....can you find the bird that doesn't belong in this pic???? LOL Monday came too quickly. While we were packing up, a thunderstorm came barreling through, but we got everything in the car before it all got soaked. Here's a group shot of the bunch that made it up there this year. Notice anything interesting in this pic?? LOL Now...here's what we used for bait...what worked for us..... Bass and pike seemed to love a Mepps #4 Aglia dressed spinner....brass blade. We also had some luck with a Black/orange/white spinner bait. One pike was caught casting into pencil reeds using a plain silver weedless spoon. The bite seemed to turn off every morning at around 11am...and then came back on after 6pm. We had our best luck fishing in 4 to 8 feet of water, with tall shoreline weeds and cabbage just under the surface. We did find a spot on the lake that held a ton of larger fish around the 60 foot mark, but we couldn't get them to bite at all. We used jigs, tipped with leeches or worms. I was wondering if we should have had a nice supply of minnows, but I've heard that Ahmic Lake walleye are hard to catch in the depths in the summertime. We also tried trolling worm harnesses along sharp dropoffs in about 20 to 30 feet of water, but again, had no luck doing this.
