  1. Going to check out the bears Len?
  2. Hey Garry your input is appreciated. I can only hope the above post was said tongue in cheek.
  3. That's the way I grew up doing it as well Dan. The difference here is the guy said they normally use rods and reels. They were using steel handlines because they were fishing in 200' of water. That's just amazing to me.
  4. Twice last fall I hooked fish directly behind guys who waded out in front of me. Just because I could. That's a common theme on some of the rivers I fish. It's "usually" flyfishermen high stick nymphing with indicators who feel the need to stand right on top of the fish.
  5. That my friend comes with experience. If someone's not sure it never hurts to ask the person you're approaching.
  6. Something just came to mind. As mentioned I'll never enter someone's space and encroach on them. Never. But...if I'm working a spot with my centrepin and am on fish, and someone steps in below me that's different. Sometimes (not all the time) I'll stand my ground and fish around them. The problem (mostly with novices or fly fishermen) they don't get the fact that centrepinners will generally cast cross stream and drift down to the fish. That while we may be standing upstream of you we're actually targetting the water that's right in front of and just downstream of you. People that don't understand this concept and walk in below a pinner will tend to get visibly upset when in fact it's them that walked into your space and are intruding on you. That's lowholing in a nutshell.
  7. Dude you are the king of greasing people out. Ever notice when we're fishing together I'm constantly walking away from you when you approach?
  8. There's different standards it seems depending on the individual. Myself I never encroach upon anybody. If someone's fishing a spot I want to fish I keep walking and find another. If I'm approaching a large run and there is room to squeeze in I never slip in downstream of someone, always upstream. (There's nothing I hate worse than being "lowholed" by someone. ). Sometimes as in the case of the ditches east of T.O., you're forced to fish cheeek to jowl. That's why I almost never fish out there. Bottom line it boils down to common courtesy and common sense.
  9. Cool. I've seen that in the wild more than once myself. I've also been driving south down 11, mid-day, and saw what I thought was a hitchiker. Turned out to be a bear standing erect on the shoulder with one "arm" outstretched. I was so startled I almost stopped and picked him up.
  10. Yeah I highly doubt "holy buckets!! would be part of your vocabulary.
  11. Interesting how Rapalas Hot Steel colour differs from lure to lure. Here's the one you guys are talking about. I had never seen this colour before: All of Rapalas other lures in the Hot Steel colour look like this: I've used the hot steel Shad Rap and Minnow Rap, both have worked fantastically for me.
  12. Some interesting info unearthed in the replies. He was asked why not use a rod and reel? He said they do when fishing shallower. They were fishing in 200 FEET OF WATER. (WOW) He said steel handlines and heavy 3-4oz jigs allow them to get a better feel for the hits. That's just unbelievable and absolutely fascinating imo. Adds more to an already incredible thing. Boy oh boy there must be a lot of monsters lurking in the extreme depths of Superior.
  13. You're an inspiration, especially to the younger guys who've been moaning lately about no work.
  14. Holy buckets? Dooood (That was a super cool video, thanks for posting).
  15. You might want to consider crimping the fluoro rather than knotting it. If it's done properly with a double barrel sleeve it holds up great. A lot of guys also slip heat shrink tubing over the crimps to finish it off. Here's a good tutorial on it that also shows the common mistakes made when crimping: http://www.leadertec.com/tipsandtechniques...techniques.html
  16. Looking at a max of 6 hrs from Peterborough I would look at 2 lakes. Either Temagami or Kipawa in Quebec. Both are enormous beautiful bodies of water with good fishing and a ton of high quality lodges. There's way too many to list, but I can recommend a couple if you're interested. If it was me I'd lean towards Kipawa as I think the fishing is a bit better.
  17. Sounds good, but at 40-50 dollars for a 200yd spool I think I'll wait and see before I pounce.
  18. You'll never see me complain about deals. I've never understood that mentality either. This coming from someone who buys what he wants whenever he wants LOL! (As long as my better half is in the dark I'm golden. ). Seriously though these shows are nothing compared to the grand spectacle of the old Toronto Sportsmans show in the colliseum. That was worth attending. Todays version is smaller and tawdrier by comparison. If I'm working a show (which I have in the past many times), have a vested interest in attending, am purchasing a boat, am meeting friends or have a bizzarre desire to by hounded by hucksters hawking sausages and sunglasses, then yeah, sign me up.
  19. Glad to hear your dad pulled through.
  20. When my wife and I got married we spent 5 nights at a fly in outpost camp in the Wawa area, was back home for 2 days then spent a week down in Cuba. Great times. My better half still talks about that particular fly in as her favourite trip. Is catching numbers of fish important to you, or do the accomodations take precedence? Generally speaking the further north you go the better fishing you'll find. What type of experience are you looking for and what type of fish do you want to catch?
  21. Okay that's it I can't take it anymore. Living so close I think a trip over there with the kids is on tap for the weekend.
  22. Gotta love it, well done! When I was a young kid we had a cottage north of Minden and fished Mountain on occasion. Nice lake.
