Finally we got some decent weather out here from these Arctic Temperatures. Im calling -10 a blessing from the -40s. Amazing how we can acclimatize pretty quickly. I decided to try some ice fishing in 5 minutes up the road on Cowan lake. In the summer its deadly for pike but I find that the fish are around the same size, plus it gets choked with weeds making it near unfishable in August. I figured what the heck as I can drive the truck right to a fishing hole and its only minutes away from my trailer. I figured it would be a good shake-out since this is my first trip anywhere this year. The first thing I did was head to my shed as soon as it got daylight approx 9am on Saturday. You'll notice that we haven't had too much snow, must because of the below normal temperatures. Also one of my projects is that I put a new axle on my boat trailer as I was tired of changing the bearings too many times. My first Priority in my shed was to find my felt liner Boots and dig out my winter fishing gear. No Boots and I tore the shed apart and also searched my trailer. It was almost a show stopper but I figured I might get away with using my military gore tex boots with thick socks. I also phoned my wife and she confirmed that my boots were at home in North Battleford in the garage. The last place I figured they would be as i use them for snow shoeing. There is an improvised ice road that led to a string of shacks maybe 2 kms from the boat launch in town. After talking with a few fellas I decided to find a spot back tracking and guessing for a depth of approx 6-10 ft. Upon finding a reed bed I guesstimated the distance and drilled about a dozen holes with a sharp hand auger and put out two lines with bits of minnows. I would catch 3 pike from the same hole although I tested every one of them. Funny how that works, and Pike? The first pike would be the biggest and it was enough for a meal. the other two went back in the water quickly. For me this was better than I expected. I was happy just to catch the first one. Of note, I nearly lost my rods twice. One I had to fish it out of the hole with the second one. Im game for any type of rod holder or hints as not to lose them again. In between bites and coffee I amused myself with a stick and my little buddy Spike A simple kit layout Cheap plastic toboggan, tarp, auger, shovel, inside the white bucket (seat), toilet paper, baggies, neo gloves, tackle box with pliers, knife, strainer, rod holder, bait. Inside nylon bag will be the 3 rods, one being a trout or perch outfit. In my small pack will be extra socks, mitts, fish finder, or what ever does not stay in the shed as soon as I get back the gear is ready for storage. Here are some points for improvement. -Boots -A rag to dry my hands instead of using my pants, jacket or gloves. I dont have the luxury of washing at the trailer as my water is shut off. - some sort of rod holder to secure my lines. - I suppose it would not hurt to strap my snow shoes on my toboggan. - Also my minnows were so frozen that I had to cut them in chunks. I would appreciate on any Ideas for the minnows as well as what you guys use as rod holders.

I totally disagree with you as usual. give them Unions then you get higher wages, then Higher Prices. By the way, tell we who in the service industry does not higher Part timers. In Ontario its the Norm at least in Wasaga and Pembroke.. When I was posted in Petawawa, there was not any Business at all that would hire over 30 hours, including the Donut shops. What you want Timmies to be Unionized. Imagine trying to get into the Union at Walmarts. There goes those jobs for the Luckless.

Walmarts put my wife to work and my two daughters. They also put a couple of Disabled to work too. Theyre low prices also puts competition to the other retailers. They might of put a few family businesses out of commission, but they sure higher more employees. They also have a great fishing department. They are the only store in this city that I can buy CDs and Music DVDs

We did the same, heated the whole Basement and it looked sharp. Saved on our Heating costs as we had Base Boards.

we used to take a tin can, fill it half with sand, add naptha, presto emergency heater or hand warmer. Heated our trench with a ground sheet over top quite well. If you got the Naptha. Wetneakers, let me know what you come up with. I like seasonal projects. Ill be working on a 12 ft Alum Boat Cart, strong enough to hand tow the boat and 9.9.

A lesson that should be taught in all schools . . And colleges Back in September, on the first day of school, Martha Cothren, a social studies school teacher at Robinson High School, did something not to be forgotten. On the first day of school, with the permission of the school superintendent, the principal and the building supervisor, she removed all of the desks out of her classroom. When the first period kids entered the room they discovered that there were no desks. 'Ms.. Cothren, where's our desks?' She replied, 'You can't have a desk until you tell me how you earn the right to sit at a desk.' They thought, 'Well, maybe it's our grades.' 'No,' she said. 'Maybe it's our behavior.' She told them, 'No, it's not even your behavior.' And so, they came and went, the first period, second period, third period. Still no desks in the classroom. By early afternoon television news crews had started gathering in Ms.Cothren's classroom to report about this crazy teacher who had taken all the desks out of her room. The final period of the day came and as the puzzled students found seats on the floor of the deskless classroom, Martha Cothren said, 'Throughout the day no one has been able to tell me just what he/she has done to earn the right to sit at the desks that are ordinarily found in this classroom. Now I am going to tell you.' At this point, Martha Cothren went over to the door of her classroom and opened it. Twenty-seven (27) War Veterans, all in uniforms, walked into that classroom, each one carrying a school desk. The Vets began placing the school desks in rows, and then they would walk over and stand alongside the wall... By the time the last soldier had set the final desk in place those kids started to understand, perhaps for the first time in their lives, just how the right to sit at those desks had been earned.. Martha said, 'You didn't earn the right to sit at these desks. These heroes did it for you. They placed the desks here for you. Now, it's up to you to sit in them. It is your responsibility to learn, to be good students, to be good citizens. They paid the price so that you could have the freedom to get an education. Don't ever forget it.' By the way, this is a true story. Please consider passing this along so others won't forget that the freedoms we have in this great country were earned by War Veterans.

Let me add to all servicemen that were willing to sacrifice themselves in honour of our Canadian Flag including my fallen friend Mark Isfeld in Croatia and Troop mates Shane Stashnik and Shawn Eades in Afghanistan whom I knew personally. Youll never know.

I found this on their web site Caring for Your Irish Setter Boots Before applying care products to boots, first clean them with warm water and a stiff bristle brush. Mink oil is recommended to re-condition leathers, while silicone products should be used sparingly on non-leather surfaces. All care treatment products can affect the appearance of leather; consult the product supplier for more information or details. After conditioning leather with mink oil, application of leather protector is recommended.

Check with the manufacturers direction. I was always told,we finally got Gortex boots in the Army not too long ago, not to treat them with anything as your feet are supposed to breath, that's whats Gortex is for. Just make sure that you wash your boots with a brush and water.

It was a beautiful weekend in sunny SK with near record temps for this time of the month. Before anyone blames global warming, this kind of makes up for our coolest summer in decades. All my fishing gear is put away and chance are, there is ice on the lakes, so I decided once and for all, Id fix those trailer bearings. Seems I'm changing bearings at least once a season and I got sick and tired of driving anywhere on pins and needles so I decided to take the axle off. One spindle was worned that my left end cap was too small for the right spindle. Anyways I brought the axle to Browns Axles and basically he told me the original wasn't strong enough so he would make me a new one. Yup a bigger Axel and two new spindles for $200, probably less that what Ive payed in the last couple of years doing the bearings myself, and once with a mechanic. The problem is, will it fit. Here is the original clamps that will now not fit the new axle as it is too small So off to the Garage and make something up. Here is what I came up with, Bolts and plates I was lucky as everything seems to fit pretty good. Things lined up to the original square plates. You will notice that I have one homemade plate on the bottom of the Axle. I'm going to keep an eye on it as I'm wondering if I should of doubled the home made plates as you can see it is bent around the axle. Also I had to drill two holes in order to fit the axle over the centre plate nut. Because the axle is hollow, I has put silicone around it. On a different story there was an accident this week on the very road that I traveled last Sunday from Big River. It was absolutely treacherous as I white knuckled my self an extra 1.5 hours than normal. I near lost the truck a couple of times due to ice. Here is the story, as I was curious on where this accident occured. http://www2.canada.com/saskatoonstarphoeni...fe-d974a48bc352 So on the way back I decided to find where this slew was. Entering the reservation Last weekend I slid through this T junction missing a truck, that's when I found out it was icy, up to that point I had no Idea. Typical reservation Homestead Yup, right grid all right I figured it will be along this stretch Yup this has to be it They even left a fire Blanket here. We used these woolen blankets with our stretchers in the Military Id say with the debris, the track marks, broken ice, this was the horrible spot Pretty sad, I imagine there will be a marker here that I will pass by on the weeknds now.

Today I just witnessed an accident myself, in front of me. A Jetta races and passes me on my left then tail gates and cuts to my lane in front, no signal, goes through a red light and gets T-Boned on the Passenger side by a full size pickup and skids to the curb and stops. The truck drivers wife has a whip lash, and the Jettas driver, a middle age lady gets out of her car and gets on the phone. I headed straight to the truck driver, asked them if they were OK and gave them my name as a witness. I imagine, or guess, the Jettas driver was OK. Yup I had absolutely no compassion for her.

Question on the Wolves found in Algonquin? Are they a Coyote mix that a licenced trapper had told me close to the Sand Lake Gate Petawawa area?

That is why the Provincial governments are to blame and not the Feds for the distributions. For Example. First Priorities in Saskatchewan was the 20,000 Health Workers, However 100,000 shots got given. Interesting, Eh Well, isnt this interesting. This will be kept quite http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/stor...103?hub=QPeriod People are spinning so much its funny, actually hilarious, Yesterday there was a line up 4 hours in the Dark before the clinics opened, today 200 vaccinations all day with an average wait of 30 minutes. Spin People Spin, luv it.
