  1. Really good post, and sheds some light on some interesting issues, like what stores stock goods made in Canada.
  2. I did not want to hijack the topic on new braids so I decided to start a new one on why lines, particularly braids, will fray. I have been using braid almost exclisively for a few years now, and I have noticed that in the past two years my line has been fraying a lot less frequently, and I have lost a lot less lures on casts. I think the reason for this is that I have started to invest in higher end fishing rods and reels. In my opinion a large amount of line fraying can be blamed on cheap rods with poor quality guides, or when guides get knicked. I'm not saying that there are not bad batches of braid out there, just that I find it weird that some people find one type of braid to be great while another person thinks it is crap. I know if my line if frayed, or if a lure breaks off on a cast one of the first things I do is check my guides.
  3. I know what a cougar is, and that a puma is older than a cougar, but I never run into mountain lions on ladies night.
  4. It looks a lot like a largie to me, but I would go with hybrid as it seems to have some traits identified with both species.
  5. I've only been out once in the fall, and ended up washing lures for a day, so I can't give you any advice personally. From the reading I;ve been doing lately topwaters seem to be a good options, as muskie move into shallows. I love the idea of catching a ski on topwater, but have never esperienced it myself.
  6. Wow what a beast!
  7. Am I missing something? Why is Dana out of line for making a joke. A lot of people weigh bass. Some people weigh other fish. I fished in the salmon derby this year and weighed a lot of salmon. Does that make me a bad person? What about all the bass anglers that weigh and cull fish on the water? Weighing fish is a part of the industry and the sport, that is why proper handling techniques are important to share. I would rather an experienced angler weigh a fish if he so chooses than have an inexperience angler spend 2 minutes trying to unhook a fish. Education is important here and in my experience some will not listen or learn from you if you tell them what they are doing is wrong. This was a valuable thread with good information lets try to keep it that way.
  8. That's more like it. Way to go. What a beauty tiger and a chunky ski.
  9. I remember seeing them at Tightlines in Pickering as well.
  10. Would you need new rods to pair with the reels. The only reason I ask is because I saw a guy out on the lake this summer that I think was using mooching rods, but they were quite long, 10 feet plus.
  11. Great report, the one where you are releasing the brookie with the reflection on the water is unreal. Thanks for cleaning up the rivers as well. I experience the same thing to a lesser scale every time I take my dog for a walk in the park. Some people are pigs
  12. I'm guessing that ski was conservation released
  13. Great report. Thanks for sharing.
  14. This topic was posted on another forum. Hypothetically the poster wants someone to give him the answer he wants to hear. I have done a fair share of fishing in my day, some of it in rivers and streams. When I use a single barbless hook I find it unlikely that a fish would be hooked so deep that it would die. Hypothetically a 20 inch brookie is a prime breeder with good genetics, and it is a shame that such a hypothetical fish is no longer contributing to the gene pool. If you like to catch and keep brook trout maybe you should be fishing other bodies of water where you are allowed to keep them. Hypothetically they exist, even inside the GTA, despite what your 40 years of experience suggests. And I have caught a 20 inch brookie this year. It was in a body of water where I was allowed to keep it, and I was on a camping trip fishing for dinner. I am sorry if my answer is curt, but I dislike it when a person asks a question but only listen to the answers that he wants to hear.
  15. Because people from Toronto will pay it, myself included...it's a cost of living thing.
  16. It still seems that gas is has been hanging around 1.20 a liter for the last little bit regardless of the cost of crude. Short of government regulation I don't know what can be done. The oil companies figured out a few years ago that we will still keep buying gas when it is 1.20. In many ways its our fault, as we are reliant on it. Having said that it still pisses me off that we are paying so much for gas. Definitely rant worthy.
  17. I included a brief synopsis of our results at the end of my post. Anything longer would have bee too depressing.
  18. The fire was on the island side. They were not checking licenses.
  19. Nice fish, but it's the audience that looks priceless
  20. Last night right before heading in a house lit up in flames on the opposite shore from Caesarea. Just wondering if anyone knows what happened, if everybody is ok. Also the MNR were out, checking the species that we were targeting and how many we had caught. It was nice to see a presence on the lake, as it is the first time I have seen them. Unfortunately that is all I have to report.
  21. Wow, thanks for sharing. We are heading out tomorrow morning out of Bluffers. We've tried fishing in tight, but not with the big ern in that colour. We are planning on heading out the the blue zone, but maybe we can chase some staging kings before we head in. It's too late for the GOSD but they are still a load of fun.
  22. NIce report. You were much more successful than I was at the beginning of July. I'm a little jealous.
  23. I know you don't want to spend the extra money for a loomis, but if you keep your ear to the ground you may be able to pick up a great condition one for less than retail somewhere. The balance and feel to these rods are great. I have two of them now and love then. especially my bronzeback. If not I would go with the compre...as was previously stated the difference in IM graphite does not seem to matter that much, especially if the components are the same. Also I think you would be well suited with a stradic FI as they can be had for a decent price right now, the drag on that reel is great, I can't decide if I like my stradic FI or my patriarch better.
  24. Not going to comment on that...but those are some mighty nice rods
  25. [quote name='Raf' date='26 August 2011 - 02:19 PM' timestamp='1314382748' post='615913' ccmt those gloves are a bad idea; a hook will have no problem penetrating them then you are stuck with a hook in your hand and a glove you cannot remove/cut easily. I think these gloves have value when handling a musky. I have seen a ski lipped with these gloves with no ill effect. Even a small ski can turn on a person during the release and do some serious damage. I believe such a situation happened to a member of this forum last year. I also have confidence that a glove that can prevent a musky tooth from penetrating it will have at least some resistance to a hook.
