Had their way with you indeed! Those tarpon are tough to handle! Took me a while before I was able to get a solid picture with one!
-
Nice! Did you eat any of those pike?

MJL is right, nothing beats corn for value ant effectiveness. I used the no-name brand corn with best results myself - its the cheapest and seemed to have a waxier skin that kept in on the hooks better.

Nice job!

Opinions on using Flourocarbon leaders for Pike
mepps replied to [email protected]'s topic in General Discussion
I used 80# fluro leaders last spring up near Red Lake and they were great. Even leaders with small nicks in them worked perfectly. For piece of mine I changed leaders when there were too many nicks. -
Well done bro, wish I was there!

Tough choice, but I've always like this one for some reason...maybe its becuase the mutant pike!

Using marshmallows to catch steelhead....
mepps replied to Billy - Curtiss's topic in General Discussion
When my stepdad owned a hardware store on the Credit River marshmellows were the number one bait. He normally just sold the big bags you see at the supermarket (both large and small marshmellows) - doesnt have to be scented to work I guess! -
nicely done! I must be fishing in the wrong places, becuase my experience has been the exact opposite of yours. Unfriendly fisherman, not willing to share ANY tips. The guys here hide their lures when you walk buy so you cant see what they use. Even in Canadian Tire, if you are in teh same isle as them they wont dare pick up a lure till you leave. Then again im In Halifax - I guess I gotta take a road trip!

Great choices, you'll do great this season I'm sure!

yeah, sadly all fish stocks seem low. They put a lot of money into re-stocking, but I dont think they are yet to see the results the want. I have fished a nearby stocked lake a few times and there are as many as 50 people fishing it at a time - the lake is really small too. If even half those gus keep their limit that day thats a huge hit to the population. And catch and release doenst seem to be of much interest to many fisherman here.

Thanks for the reply Ric - I thought you had forgotten about me I've seen a few of those videos before, i'll check out the other shortly. Golfisher: I caught plenty of smallies last fall near Bridgewater, havent had luch yet in teh Halifax (HRM) area. I have mostly been fishing 20-30 minutes before or after work - havent had a chance to really put time inot finding a good lake. Its pretty early for bass right now, temps are jstu above zero right now and we had snow this morning I'll be shure to reprot back with more details. Iall ask around about locations near Antigonish. Bass are not held inhigh regard here, they are about as liked as carp are in Ontairo. The smallies and chain pickeral are not native to NS waters and all the trout guys (which is at least 75% of the fishermen here) HATE them. Southern NS is best for big smallies, 18-22 inchers are pretty common. May is supposed to be prime time for stipers in teh Minas Basin, but they are practically an endangered species here (rpobably will be official in the next few years) Im gonna be in teh US most of may and missing the best time sadly...

Was $1.28 per L here, and said to be going up tomorrow.

Its hard to pick just one fish! I have had some great battles with pike, but nothing tops my experiences tarpon fishing. I wroked pretty hard and put in some serious time ebfore I started catching tarpon consitantly. Some of my tarpon took an hour to get it and jumped 9-10 times clean out of the water.

I've got a 2003 Honda Civic, 4 door, 5 speed - that site says I get 31 city, 39 hwy but I dont kwno how accurate that really is. I can probably get about 450km a tank in the city, and maybe 600km highway if im lucky.

I have 2 weeks in Augusta in mid May to get some training for work. I was thinking of traveling west to Alabama and fishing with one of our own OFNers - but they missus and the baby are gonna be joining me, so I gotta keep the road trips short. I'll be 3 hours from Havannah, 2.5 hours from Atlanta. Im thinking Atlanta may be the place to be since we can see the georgia aquarium and hit up Bass Pro (no Cabelas nearby). As much as I'd love to do some saltwater fishing, its way out of my price range right now. I really hope to do some large mouth fishing though and have scouted out a couple nearby lakes. I've got evening and a weekend to explore! I watched an episode of Real Fishing recently where he was fishing a couple hours south of Augusta and they were hitting 7lb bass consitantly - I'd be happy with any size bass at this point! Anyone have any experiences fishing the south?

I've got a Calcutta 251 which has only3 bearings I thnk. It's my favorite and most used reel by far! I've become a big Quantum fan since I got an energy PTi, their $200 (tour PT) baitcasters are as good as any 300 shimano as far as im concerned!

What is needed to deadbait for Pike?
mepps replied to [email protected]'s topic in General Discussion
Yeah that was me! We were There at the end of May on both our visits. You cant go with with Brett or Kevin. We have gone to anglers kingdom twice now and he offers one of teh best prices arounf for this type of trip. There used to me an American meal plan, but I guess he ahs dropped it now. We usualyl go for the all bear meal plan anyway - it's worked out ok except a few late launches in teh morning. If you are interested in reading about last trip to LV, they can bee seen here. Dont to ge a nice 9 inch firetiger Suick aswell. Thay can be deadly!
