The pike picture is real. It is a monster fish with a smaller pike in it's mouth but it was a fish from europe and was run around the internet as being the new canadian record. I have had a large pike swipe at a smaller hooked pike before but it is a neat photo. Sometimes a good photo angle can make fish look much bigger also. The only true test is a certified scale. No touch up to this Simcoe perch photo just a good angle with some giant perch.

Hey Cliff. A friend caught a crappie on Pigeon yesterday in 40 ft of water. Keep heading out.

This photo has been kicking around the internet for years. Supposedly caught just about everywhere. The next one you might see is the new canadian record pike or possibly the ontario couger confirmation photo. Internet bigfoot. I have one of the pike photos, actually a pike from europe. Nice fish but not local.

Most of the weeds are dying and decaying. Using up oxygen in the area. Could be a reason fish are not around them right now. Good luck.

Nice deer. Judging by the thickness of his main beams and his face, he is still fairly young. With that many points he should be a monster next year. Surprising he is still carrying his rack. I have seen deer around peterborough that have lost 1 or both antlers in early December.

Hey Jer. I know exactly where you were and you should try twice as deep or twice as shallow. I was directly across the lake from you yesterday. This underwater photo of a muskie was taken right near your spot. Does that new hut fire flares up when you catch a fish? Looks pretty flashy. Keeps the cavaliers and honda civics racing up and down the lake from crashing into you. Opening day I was in 3.5 feet and had lots of perch and a largemouth, very little weed. The last couple of times out I have been working deeper. Today on Pigeon some of our group were out to 40 feet deep and catching some fish. Long way from shore or weeds. If you think about Jack Lake, a popular crappie spot, most fish are caught in 20-30 feet on the large mud flat in front of the boat launch. I'm not saying that's the best pattern but after tying several shallow locations I'm heading deep. I think we managed around 20 mixed panfish,(perch, rock bass, crappie) one smallmouth and a small walleye. The OOS fish all released healthy and happy. My jig never landed shallower than 25 ft. Nice to see the CO's out and about. Keep looking.

So maybe they should rename article, "New fishing season offers new oppourtunities for businesses and anglers in the Kawartha's". The speak briefly about the concern of incidental catches of walleye but failed to mention the regulation changes for walleye that should benefit that species in this region. i.e. The new harvestable slot limit. I glad they speak about how the new season will benefit the local businesses and anglers. "Mr. Prentice said the Ministry is hoping to see ice anglers drawn to the area with the new season, and the possibility certainly exists for increased tourism and economic opportunities. As for Mr. McBride, while he said he wasn't sure if local anglers would take to the ice, he's stocked his shop with tackle and bait for them. "We've got it, yes," he said." As the festival spokesperson, It's nice they recognized the Bridgenorth Winter Panfish Festival. The event is shaping up to look like a great day on the water. This event is focused on attracting new anglers to spend a day on the ice enjoying the new angling oppourtunity. No equipment required. Everything will be provided if needed. Plan on joining us on Feb. 13, 2010 during the Winter Free Family Fishing Weekend. Check out the website for more information about the event. http://www.clearvieworganizing.com/22.html

One hut in a bay in a new body of water everyone wants to learn. You should just name your hut "magnet". Good luck, I will stop by if I'm in the area.

Try sand flats for perch. We have been getting them between 3-11 feet. Also hanging around outside weedlines. The crappie have been a little tougher to find. From what I have been hearing look deeper than you would expect 14-20 feet. Problem is that there is lots of open space out there in 20 feet with nothing. I'm starting to look for deep water close to spring spawning sites to see if that works. Besides lots of perch, the catch has been mixed with a few crappies, bass, muskie and one sunfish. Small spoon tipped with a minnow head has been working. The cold weather last weekend slowed most people down but beside a couple of friends who have slayed them most of us are still trying to put together a consistant pattern. This weekend looks good so I would expect to see a bunch of people out searching. Let us know what happens on Cameron, no spots need be revealed but a depth and pattern helps. Sure is nice being frustrated on our home lakes instead of driving 1+ hrs to do it. Have fun.

I was planning on checking out south bay this weekend. How deep is the area around your hut? I think I will start out deep and work my way into the scattered weed beds trying to find the pike. Crappie and perch will be a bonus. Good luck.

This went from an idea to a major project fairly quickly. Should be lots of fun. BWPF_OOD_Ad.pdf

Time to get rid of some fishing gear
Michael_Brown replied to Big Cliff's topic in General Discussion
Hey Cliff; Tough choices to make when your downsizing. My wife is a professional organizer and one of her specialities is helping people downsize into smaller more managable places. I would have to keep the vex but your right about the aquavu. Water is nice and clear around here. We were watching perch hit the other day when we filmed the piece for CHEX news. Check out the muskie photo a friend took out on Chemong on the opening day this year. Cool picture. For me, I use a LCD graph and mostly for depth and suspended fish. The vexilar are awesome but I find people get into "TV" mode and miss a lot of fish because they get excited and set the hook too early when they see one coming up from bottom. They are great units and in the right hands a fantastic tool. Good Luck. -
That's part of the fun. These lakes are virgin to ice fishing. No established areas or patterns. It may take a few trips to figure them out but when you do, you may have a hoard to yourself unless you want to share. We managed a bunch of perch in 3-11 feet of water on Chemong lake. Nothing fantastic but some action. Also caught were a couple of largemouths and a small muskie all released healthy and happy. I know of a few people who destroyed the crappie out deeper. It is just a matter of finding something that works and then expanding on it. Might take a winter or two but after waiting 90 years to try, I'm preparing myself for the occasional panfish skunking. Of course the upside of big schools of fat panfish just waiting to be discovered will cause me to keep drilling holes.

The new regulation changes that just became law on Jan. 1 , 2010 address the walleye concern with a new harvestable slot limit for walleye. No fish over 20 inches may be kept allowing the larger females to spawn as many times as they can. The spawning success each year is important for the numbers of fish in the lake. Chances are the 14-17 inch fish are from a good year class. The number of small perch is likely from a very strong year class of perch. They should grow into a good number of keeper perch. Of course a 4 inch perch is also good forage for the muskie, bass and walleye in the lake. As for keeping an eye on it, each of the last two springs numerous volunteers anglers in FMZ 17 have taken part in a spawning survey of the local spawning sites to try to increase the local information about spawning sites. This information is being collected by the MNR to help with evaluating the population health and possible spawning site improvement projects in the future. Fisheries don't change overnight but it is not being overlooked. Of course the lack of walleye on ice, could just be to declining angler skill, at least that's what I think my problem is.

Cool. One of my new quests for this winter is to catch a carp through the ice. I have never done it nor have a heard of anyone else around here trying it. They should be a wicked fight through and 8 inch hole. The Kawartha's are full of carp so my location is perfect and now we have an open season. Any tips?

Done it!

What? The man wanted some accurate info. I always knew where to find my teenage boys... at the pool. Strange they didn't seem to swim much. Really was a fanatstic trip. Three resorts side by side, all Rui's and access to all in a very fair price.

Beans let me know where and when you want a hole and I will come and drill one for you. We caught mostly perch on chemong today but it sure was nice being able to try. That's the fun part, is learning what to look for and where to fish on our home lakes. When you figure them out on Pigeon, you have about 30 other nearby lakes to work on.

Hey Everyone: Well, it is finally here, year-round Kawartha fishing. A group of us went out on Chemong Lake this morning and drilled our first holes just off the causeway. Managed to catch lots of perch and a mixed bag of other species. Nothing fanatastic but it sure was nice dropping a line this close to home. I'm posting a picture of my first Chemong Lake ice perch and although it is not big, I am very proud of it. I have caught lots of bigger perch but this one is special, a ton of work by lots of dedicated people went into that fish. I have never wanted to catch a fish a much as a Kawartha panfish through the ice, now I can strike that of the bucket list. Thank You to everyone who played a role in opening this great angling oppourtunity in zone 17: MNR FMZ 17 Advisory council Anglers who completed surveys, attended meetings and provided other input and support. It was nice meeting everyone out on the ice today and I would guess about 100 people were fishing on Chemong today. Chex news was out and filmed a segment for Monday night news, check it out for a chance to see Ron Reyns in action.

Het DocTRT; My family and I stayed at the Rui Mambo at couple of years ago. Fantastic place, one of the best trips we have ever had. I did get to try the deep sea fishing also and had a great time. When you get to the resort, find the Rui Bachata which you have access to all the facilities (Rui's rule). Anyway behind the resort is the water sport equipment place, where you will get info about the off resort deep sea fishing. I went for a half day an it cost $75.00 US worth every penny. The boat was very respectable and the crew friendly. We went out about 3-4 miles and caught wahoo, sailfish, dolphin fish and a blue marlin. We actually hooked up a triple header of two sailfish and the marlin at the same time. Everyone takes a turn in the fighting chairs, the more fish they hook-up the more turns you get. Even if I had not caught anything it was a blast. Seeing the different species of fish, also a sea turtle and tons of flying fish was worth the money alone. We are planning on heading back to the Mambo this March and this time I am going deep sea all day. We were there over Christmas , so the fishing info should be helpful for this time of year. Check the resort forcast before booking your day. The crew keep the fish and sell them to support their income. If you want one ask in advance. Not sure about the shore fishing as the whole place is a giant beach and covered with above the waist unprotected skin. Have a great trip.

How did you drill the holes? I thought you were on the DL. I would have paid good money to see you running in circles around the hole trying to drill with one hand. Thanks for the update.
-
Do they make a non-Gumby colour or do we have risk getting a good old fashion beating and getting our boots, hat and mittens taken?
-
Hey Irishfield. Ron just called me. He is coming out on Chemong as long as someone drills his holes for him, brings him a large coffee with one cream and possibly rubs his toes if they get cold, otherwise he cannot wait either. Panfish on.
