  1. in a way this is bad advice... because if he does get a rare 50 inch kawarthas musky he will likely kill one of the biggest and most rare fish in the lake... on the flipside... if you use small tackle on the st.lawrence river and kill a 50... well there are lots of big fish to take its place... either way its a bad situation... if there are decent size musky caught in the water being fished... 40 inch and up.... get the right gear!! i dont really have all the right gear for salmon fishing safely and properly... so i found someone to take me... also... if you dont have a musky rod... im willing to bet you dont have knipex really long nose pliers cradle or musky net replacement hooks so even if you do battle the fish to the boat properly... you wont have the right tools to deal with the fish safely.... youll get hurt...
  2. I agree with RAF... There are zero circumstances where it is ok to use a little bass size spinning combo for musky... Unless you get yourself a bigger saltwater spinning outfit or a beefy carp rod or something like it... And 10 minutes is deffinately way too long... Most of my battles are 1-2 minutes tops... I have also had musky snap 50lb braid like it was 6lb... That's why I stick to 100lb braid... This is just one of those situations where you should target something else...
  3. I think it's for trolling specific anglers... Like me... And hooked up to a tiller... This electric motor would be awesome...
  4. Cause with the iPhone you can do this in a couple seconds...
  5. That's what Sunday was like at promenade with simon... Crazy
  6. Lowrance x96... And Paul that's why I haven't got screen shots yet... Gotta get rid if the coordinates...
  7. The new unit doubled my catch tonight... Hit a couple spots... Got a couple walleye... Then slipped into my old honey hole... Nothing!!! So I figured I could try to find em with my new sonar... Poke around a bit... Found em suspended and doubled my catch... Thank you hummingbird...
  8. My first reel was an Abu Garcia ambassador c4... Got it for 69.99 about 10 years ago and still going strong... I think they are around 100 now... And like Roy said... Use the leftover cash for a net and release tools...
  9. I wish I knew how to do that stuff... I have a hard time pickling wieners...
  10. Curious... Why dont you guys use stronger hooks?
  11. I fight carp on the st.Lawrence in areas with up to 5 mph current... I catch 30lb fish every year in the current... On shore... And I've seen them peel over 300 feet and a buddy got peeled almost 900 before he turned his 40lb carp... And we are on shore and can't follow or chase fish... Our hooks are only little size 2-4... I'm not putting carp or musky in the same category as salmon.... But using tools from different areas of fishing has helped me become a good multispecies angler... And don't tell me you can't turn a chinny... I've targeted them from shore also... I've landed chinnys over 30 with 10 lb mono on a 10 foot noodle rod... And before you say they don't have anywhere to run when they are in the rivers... I've landed 30 lb fish off of a pier... They had lots of room to run... And they did... And I turned em... Then reeled in the 400-500 yards of line that was previously on my reel...
  12. for carp... sometime we bet that the losing anglers have to eat the bait off their own hook... really makes you think twice about using "spicy tuna and sweet chili" boilies or corn that has been soaking in my driveway for a month... either way... they all taste like
  13. if this is becoming a common occurance... up the strength of your tackle!!! for musky my gear is 100lb test and up... line is 50lb mono or 100lb braid swivels and snaps are 150-300lb test 4x strong hooks heavy duty split rings... wolverine the musky i target are about the same weight as your kings... but it is more of a bulldog style fight... not screaming runs... and carp... they scream line... i run 50lb braid and big 12 foot rods with a lot of power to turn a fish... the rod lenght really allows you to steer big fish and put em where you want em... if your not pulling hooks/straightening hooks i would beef up your gear... if you dont wanna beef up your gear... start circling around any time you get a big runner... then... if you still think its huge and you wont be able to control it... start clearing your other lines and chase the fish... my 2 cents
  14. My 40 Honda runs 10-20 hours a week from mid may till mid dec... So 280-560 hours per year... Probably about 350-400 is an accurate representation of hours per year... 95 % of the time I'm trolling
  15. well yesterday was the first half of a trip trade i arranged with simon...aka pikeslayer...salmon fishing with him for musky with me.... so my adventure started saturday around lunch time... i hit the road in my sister in laws toyota yaris... i figured id save some gas $$$ over my f150 fx4... but did i ever miss the leg room... in 6 foot 4 inches tall...lol... i had a relativly good drive... altho i did get to witness a transport tire blowout at very very close range ... scared the crap out of me... i didnt realize how loud a tire blowing out could be... in the end every lane of cars swerved towards me and i was on the shoulder for a while... so i finally arive after 4.5 hours in the clown car i arive at simons house... and within 5 minutes i had a cold Heineken tallboy in my hand and handshake to follow... within 20 minutes of talking with simon and his son i knew... fish or no fish... i was in for a fun day on the water with good people... after some story telling and more tallboys... out comes the feast... and i do mean feast... sirloin steaks... gigantor shrimps... asparagus... and baked potatoes... i was in heaven.... then it was more beers... and after forcing ourselves away from story time off to bed for ou 430am wake up... (BTW thanks again simon for the guest room... that meant a lot to me) mcdonalds breakfast boatlaunch lines in the water 600-630 first take came fast... and because of yours truely... was off fast... next take i let the pros take care of the hookup and pass me the rod... i was into a strong fish... after a nice battle i landed a nice 9.5 pound chinook... that was all it took to make my day... after that it slowed down for a while... so off to the blue zone... after searching around we found a series of bait balls about a mile long... that was the ticket... we had active fish for the next couple hours... we ended up boating 4 rainbows in the blue zone and dropped a little bow behind the boat... again...my bad... ...well... after 8 hours on the water with 5 for 7 and a handfull of knock-offs... it was time to get back to the launch... thats where the day got interesting... the weather on the lake was amazing all day... however... on shore or near shore... wow... i got to see the wrath of lake O... raindrops so big they felt like paintballs hitting you... howling winds... there was so much rain the boatlaunch looked like a waterfall... so we made it back to simons house for some more handshakes and thank yous... but i had to go... i had a 4.5 hour drive ahead of me with some wet feet... all in all... i had a great time... all our fish were good size for eating... we all got fish... good people... good weather... thanks again simon... i had a blast... cant wait to return the favour with some musky action... FISH PORN shawns 12 pound rainbow simon looked really tall there didnt he?????????????????????? that cause he was standing on the gas tank to match up to my size... sorry to burst your bubble simon...
