Questions on boat sonar, Lowrance, simrad, ray marine
scugpg replied to muskyhart's topic in General Discussion
The NSS look to be awesome units but I'd have concerns about the touch screen in wet weather/slimed hands etc. If you have a bigger boat that the unit would be concealed from the elements than it would be great. Unless you can score a really sweet deal on a Gen1, at this point I'd go for the HDS Gen2 and there are rebates on them right now. Buying the current model helps ensure future add-ons will be compatible with it. -
Unfortunately you can't get down imaging with regular elite 5. if you are set on having down imaging you could get an hds(new or used)...also good rebates on new right now.....and save up for structure scan down the road which does down and side imaging.
-
Its not a good fish finder because it uses a 455/800 transducer its for structure. You want one with 83/200 to mark fish. You want the non dsi elite or the hds series.

Arcade Fire is really growing on me. This is one of the coolest videos I've seen in a long time. Reminds me a bit of Rush's Subdivisions poking fun at the burbs. Very retro! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=awHWColYQ90&hd=1 -
They have clips on their Youtube channel but don't think they have full episodes Kawarthas http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUhQT39ybH8 LSC with Bob http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zG4t3AnlT2c
-
They look to have the same line/weight rating as the eyecons so hopefully at least one of them can handle something like a convector/tekota etc.
-
They also make a legend tournament version exactly for that purpose. Does anyone know if the eyecon or LT can hold a trolling reel?
-
I've been enjoying the new season of Musky Hunter this year on WFN. Did anyone else have a chance to see the episode they filmed in the Kawarthas a few weeks back? It was neat to see them cover that area. Also saw that Bob Devine will be in the one this coming weekend filmed on LSC which should be cool to see. For the guys that went to the Toronto show, how was the seminar Jim put on? I hope to catch it next time around.

Its unfortunate you need to even have that kind of conversation, it should be common courtesy to offer every time unless you are consistently switching between his/your boat or some other arrangement. Doesn't mean you have to accept every time, but the offer is nice it acknowledges the time and $ you put into your rig....not to mention in your case fishing ability you seem to put lots in the boat.
-
I'd give the guy his gear back and be done with it. Some folks don't realize the costs of boat ownership its not much to request to spilt fuel and buy coffee etc. Its too bad that you have to request it in the first place it should be offered every time....even if you decline to take money. "well you are going anyways" does not cut it. But clearly some don't see this as a financial priority.

Dropping pitch doesn't always lower your top end speed - if you are not already in the recommended WOT range. Once you start adding people and heavy gear your rpms head south and a prop change is usually necessary. Sometimes its necessary to have props for different applications.
-
hey bud what do you have on there now for a prop? You'll want to get some rpm readings first as that will help you find the right pitch. Merc has a prop calculator to input those readings. Turning point propellers makes a good prop and interchangeable hub system and very good price point. Depending on how much weight is in your boat I'm guessing a 12 or 13 pitch might be recommended once you get the rpm readings at wot with your existing prop.

They are actually looking sure a retailer in canada http://www.tackleindustries.com/muskypikerods.html Seem to get good reviews 2yr warranty.
-
Price point is good, but the Enduras don't have the maximizer technology. Had a chance to compare an Endura 55 to a Traxxis 45 both in 36'' length. They were very close in weight with the Endura being a bit heavier. The 55 had a noticeably bigger prop/bottom end too. IMO they are both heavy on the back of a canoe. A little 30lb although not as much juice is considerably lighter.
-
Thanks for your input.... even 5lbs of weight makes a difference in this application
-
Thank you for the responses all keep them coming. Starting to get the idea that 36lbs+ thrust should do the trick just fine. Would like to hear if anyone has used a 45 or 55lb on a canoe
-
I liked this stuff but it was actually showing up on the fish finder. Very nice line though.
-
I hear you - unfortunately a few ponds/lakes I frequent don't permit gas...else I'd go that route like a small 4 stroke or something. It'd actually be a lighter setup than a 30lb motor and 45-60lb battery vs the 40lbs of the gas and a spare litre or two. Using a higher end motor with minn kota's maximizer or motorguide's digital motors should help save battery considerably at lower speeds, and thus not need a really big battery at least for smaller trips. Can't beat the gas there.
-
I have used a 30lb going upriver in current and it worked pretty good, so I'm thinking 40-45 would be plenty not sure if it would make any difference in speed past that. Just more power for current etc and have usefulness on a bigger boat if needed?
-
Hey all I had a ? For the canoe folks I was wondering what size trolling motor you use for it? I was thinking about 40-55lb motors and although probably overkill it might be more useful long term not to mention use less battery. The 45+ adds about another 5lbs over smaller ones. just wondering what your thoughts would be on this. Thanks

Welcome Gord. You will enjoy it here there is a very helpful bunch of folks.

I really hope the Pats win this one. They will be looking to lay a beating on the Giants after the 2007 upset.
