Doesn't matter what you fly you use for salmon. Unless you are lucky enough to encounter them within their first hours in the river, in which case they will slam almost anything bright, they don't want to eat or attack what you have. Wooly buggers, egg sucking leech's, often the same stuff that will work for bows. Only on extremely rare occasions have I seen a not-fresh salmon intentionally bite at anything. A general rule of thumb is, if the fish has lost it's silverish colours, and is now turning into a yellowish- to green- to black (depending how long its been in there) colour, chances are it's moot to cast at unless you plan on poaching. Cheers

For fall trout, my fly of choice is a simple single egg fly in orange. If you ever keep a trout for the dinner table, check it's stomach contents. When the salmon are still running, you usually find they are gorging on salmon roe. My buddy and mentor often does well drifting live roe in sacks, just like on a pin. It takes a bit more skill to get the drift right though. In the spring, there is more insect life so you can do well with stonefly nymphs, and my personal fav a bead headed prince nymph. Egg patterns still work well, and sucker spawn patterns do well too. The size and brightness of all flies often depends on the clarity of the water and the hatch at the time. Pay attention to nature. Good fly fisherman always keep a close eye on what kind of flies are rising off of the water, and what kind of nymphs are hiding under rocks.

The lake my cottage is on was at the lowest I've ever seen in my lifetime. It's not a big or deep lake, but I think it was down about 2.5 feet. The water level marks on the rocks were really quite shocking. Good thing we built a new floating dock and pooched the old crib style one... that would have been hell to get levelled.

Funny that traffic has been a problem since the 50's and nobody has put forth a decent solution since.

Once in a lifetime thing that you've seen in the outdoors??
ctranter replied to danc's topic in General Discussion
I have two instances to share. The first happened when I was 12 or 13 and we were heading in to town to grab groceries at the cottage by car. A huge cougar leaped out of the bushes, nearly over the hood of the car, in one single jump it had cleared the road and was long gone in the bushes. We are in the Parry Sound area and haven't spotted another since. The second (hopefully not once in a lifetime) happened just a few days ago when I realized we had wild, nesting Peregrine Falcons on our property. I was there with a friend and he snapped some great shots, which may be once in a lifetime images. If he gets me the pics soon, I'll post one! -
Great fish, great t-shirt! Looks like you had a memorable trip. Thanks for the report

how to fish live crayfish for smallmouth bass
ctranter replied to redpearl99's topic in General Discussion
Indeed I had experienced this often as a kid, but now it is even more enthralling to tie a crayfish pattern fly and have it catch several smallies, and trust me I have brought in many tanks. There is just something so satisfying about a fish that decides to eat something that you have created yourself. To the OP, when I use live crays I hook them through the tail on a dropshot rig and focus on rocky areas and structure. I find that when you hook them in any part of their body they die instantly and lose their movement. -
Funny that facts were being brought up so I checked some facts which I found really amusing. According to a wiki page on bear related deaths, there have been 19 black bear deaths in North American since 2000. There is about one or two every few years across the entire continent. There are more grizzly deaths, mind you, but that's a different issue. Now the scary part, cows viciously destroyed 108 people in the United States between 2003-2007 alone!.. An average of 21.6 deaths-by-cow in the US every year. What is the solution to this madness? HUNTING TIME! Now I know you will just reply with some lame, pseudo-insulting jab about how I must be a tree-hugging deer lover, but I hunt annually for a variety of species, including bear. The solution isn't the spring hunt (or crying about big city politics), it's to understand how to coexist in nature, with the extremely rare chance of encountering a bear http://bookofodds.com/Accidents-Death/Accidental-Deaths/Articles/A0252-Behind-the-Numbers-Death-by-Cow http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fatal_bear_attacks_in_North_America#2000s

Wow, I am genuinely surprised at some of the fearful responses here. Some of you guys clearly need to spend more time in the bush if you are that scared of a black bear. It is a wild animal that demands respect. After that, it follows the same rules of the animal kingdom as the rest of nature: Eat easy meals, spend as little energy as possible acquiring that food, avoid risk or danger at all costs, make babies and protect babies. I understand that animals do cross over into more urban spaces from time to time and thats why people with guns have to take them out. What I don't understand is a) why people are shocked to find wild animals WHILE IN THE WILD and why people think bears are bloodthirsty meat-fiends who will tear down your cabin door in the middle of the night and eat your girlfriend while making you watch... Seriously people, get that lump between your shoulders check out, because clearly something is missing inside.

School Aquarium program has just got a huge boost
ctranter replied to spinnerbaitking's topic in General Discussion
So many cross-curricular learning opportunities can be accessed as a result of this initiative - I love it! The best part is that "spec ed" learners have been proven to be more engaged in their learning and retain more knowledge when animals (or other dependents, i.e. a plant) is present. It's nice to see science "in action", rather than just restricted to the texts. I'm sure the kiddies learn life lessons too, such as life and death and respecting nature. If only we could get something like this in the TDSB, I would support a program like this in my classroom in a heartbeat. -
It's an OK body for general purpose shots, but if you get bit by the photography bug you will definitely wish you invested in a higher end model. It's like all gear, really. That is a great combo for most uses and will take fantastic fishing photos. If you want a macro lense, the choice is fairly simple. Poke around on Cannon's site under their Macro lenses and you an get an idea for the price range. The Cannon 100M 2.8L Macro L series is commonly known as Cannon's top macro lense, and it will be the next piece of glass that I hoarde into my collection, but if you are searching for a more financially viable option, there are several Macro lenses that are extremely highly rated as well. With Harry's and Vistek on with good Cannon deals, it's hard to pass up, but I recommend looking into the 7D at least, if you are taking your first leap into dslr photog.

I think the Bills players ought to be happy to get out of the cesspool known as Buffalo for a few days.

I wish Don elaborated on how weak and pathetic the Senators are. I understand how this opens up the ________ vs. Sens debate, but I feel as though it requires affirmation how comparable the senators are to the boil on my Aunt's left foot. I recognize how the original poster clearly organized links to be anti-HNIC, and somehow pro sens, but I find this in violation of a nationally-accepted, agreed-upon understanding upon Canadian hockey fans, in which "the Sens suck, plain and simple". I hope this clears up any misunderstandings that have clearly taken place. I want to thank, in advance, all Canadian hockey fans (who are not smoking reefer atm) who recognize that the Sens clearly have 0% chance at success (statistically). I also want to apologize, in advance, for all non-sens fans who were forced to read this response in duplicate (as, through basic cognition, have already arrived at the fact that Ottawa clearly will not advance past the first round) Again, this post is not meant to highlight failures, yet is designed to ensure that all hockey fans within Canadian borders are thinking clearly and capably. I hope the hockey-education readers of OFC have decided upon a well-inform nation-team decision. Go nucks.

There are much better examples of true Canadiana than the origional links posted. How about: Edit: Stompin Tom covered by Jedimaster's post. Thankfully.

Miller that is a very cool yak setup, and one I would love to learn more about. Do you think you could add a couple more pics of the yak from various angles? I apologize if you have possibly done this already in another thread, but with warm weather around the corner, I'd love to get some ideas on great kayak setups. Thanks!

He was wearing a Leafs jersey when he touched you, wasn't he? Seriously, I've never met anyone with such an inferiority complex, that you would spend literally 1-2 hours a day arguing against the leafs. Yes Ottawa is ahead of Toronto this year in the standings. Yes, the leafs have a much better franchise history. And yes, Ottawa is a depressingly poor city to live in. I get it. But seriously dude, move on and get a life.

Shhhh mod please lock this thread. 1.5 KvD topwaters have been my secret for smallies in shallow lakes for years. (p.s. I am kidding about locking, obviously) good luck
