  1. The politics of diffusing tensions within some very angry communities.
  2. M2b2 That sounds like a great bread recipe. Not that I knead to add another to my arsenal. I do like bannock. So simple to make and versatile. Especially when camping or on a fishing trip
  3. The auction or "clock" is a Dutch system that has been in place in Toronto around 50 years. It brings flowers direct to the wholesale buyers without the need to have 2-300 small scale growers going from shop to shop selling their crops At one time large enough to be sole North American distributor of indoor potted flowers to Lowes USA, and one of a handful of nationwide distributors to Home Depot USA. That was back when our dollar was below $.70 US
  4. That was the one the son bought last year on sale at TSC for $150. I like the fact you can use either propane or charcoal for your heat source. I like the propane when doing fish, chicken or jerky. Charcoal is my preference when cooking thick, heavier slabs of red meat.
  5. The pussy willow stems go to the flower auction. As for crappie. A couple of my early spots are already almost clear of ice.
  6. Well I'm sitting here in the house getting caught up in the kitchen. Tonight's supper will be pork chops marinated in apple juice, cardamom and a blend of poultry seasonings. While that marinates I'll make me another batch of fish coating. After that we'll do the prep work for tomorrow's supper, as I'll be peddling my wares at the Ancaster fishing sale tomorrow. The dish requested by the clan is a crockpot cabbage roll casserole. All the goodness of a cabbage roll without all the fiddling around. Just layer it like a lasagna and cook for 6 hours.
  7. Here I sit in Thorold watching the snow fall. Apparently winter is not done with us yet. Good thing we finished harvesting the last of the pussy willows back at the beginning of the week. Now we can focus on the seedlings on our nice warm grow benches and get the grow house all sealed up. Next week I hunt for crappie.
  8. Port D docks are now in according to the G&F.
  9. Cardamom is one of them big spice staples in a Finnish kitchen. For me the aroma and flavour are just heady. I load my pulla (Finnish bread) with a lot. About 2 tsp per dough batch.
  10. We ate mountains of liver growing up and loved it. Properly tenderized, dredged in seasoned flour and pan seared in the drippings from the bacon and onions. Just a hint of pink in the middle, and always ever so tender. It literally melts in your mouth.
  11. Hey Shag. I'd be rubbing fresh ground cardamom right into the meat. It gives off a wonderful rich flavour.
  12. You forgot the fried onions and bacon. About a 1/2 lb of each. Now I'm drooling. Before my one neighbour had to give up the hunt, I used to receive a very generous supply of deer liver every fall from the 5-6 deer he'd harvest every year. (He hated the stuff)
  13. You know, the more I look at the Leafs, the more I am reminded of a good old fashioned burlesque show. In between the performers you had the stand up comic. In hockey, you get real games with a Leaf game in between as the comic relief.
  14. All I want to watch is good hockey. Don't really care what team is playing. or even if it's NHL or minors (minors play with a lot more heart than the Leafs possess). If the Leafs are no longer capable of playing good hockey, so be it. Let them be the league's joke. Let them fold. No real loss. Still a lot of good hockey out there without them.
  15. It shows that not enough individuals are either using the resources, or familiar with them. The main goal of this survey was to get respondents to grade, by level of importance, a set of assets. Even if you only ranked the 2 assets you knew, the rest are auto ranked down the list. By default, they know which assets have greater value. A number of government surveys are skewed in this manner.
  16. That comes under the jurisdiction of different government agencies such as CFAO or CFIA. In the case of imported foodstuffs, CFIA is very hesitant to engage in chemical testing on foreign food sources, until a solid complaint is lodged. Put simply. the Feds are not going to put up a guide for eating ocean caught, farmed or imported fish.
  17. Actually it was perfectly thought out. Especially if you are focusing your survey to a specific outcome / proposal. A driven opinion poll has questions and language skewed towards a set of desired responses. They want respondents with definite positive/ negative responses. Looks like they are fishing for a response that either validates continued expenditures in the program, or justifies cancelling/ reducing the expenditures. A number of us university students, back in the day, used to write material for survey companies and political parties in Toronto. i still get a kick reading some of the stuff they try passing off.
  18. Regretably no. The fella selling it has, in the past, had venison, elk, moose and bear jerky available. I won't buy from him, but lots of tourists do every year.
  19. Lots of elk jerky available up in Monetville last year. The boys bought 5lbs during their annual trip to the West Arm. They have a "friend".
  20. Sorry guys. Warden says i have a prior commitment.
  21. I just sprayed my screen with beer. Lol.
  22. I used to be first into the water every year after ice out to get our docks in place and still wading in November when we pulled the docks out. The one uncle had a "permanent" dock set on a rock crib. Lord knows how many times we rebuilt that dock after the ice crushed it into kindling.
  23. Happens every year throughout cottage country. You leave your dock out and you risk it drifting out with the ice or getting crushed.
  24. Bought the renewals for the daughter and son in law at Christmas. They never received their cards in the mail. Supposedly new ones are being sent in the mail after a long circuitous discussion on the phone.
  25. That's OK Lew, you need a certain amount of "sisu" to truly appreciate the qualities of a good sauna
