I work at the city of Peterborough. I talked to our City clerk today. Peterborough does have a by-law for recreational vehicles (boats, rv's, trailers), the length limit is 25', there is no limit on width. By-laws are not clear as Charles mentions above, but if you are cooporative with the Clerk or Deputy-Clerk at your municipality, they should be able to give you a by-law number and you can look at it yourself, it would take far too long to find it yourself. As with many other Municipalities, Peterborough's is complaint-driven. You won't get a call or visit from the city unless a complaint is lodged. The by-law is generally enforced by city by-law enforcement officers, but due to downsizing and cut-backs, most Municipalities no longer have dedicated by-law enforcement officers and they rely on the complaint system to narrow-down the offenders. The restrictions vary greatly from municipality to municipality. Some don't even have a by-law to deal with recreational vehicle parking restrictions. That's why Charles probably didn't find anything.

The clerk at your local municipal office should be able to help you out and start you in the right direction of finding the particular by-law. They are often very hard to find as you never know what title it may be under or if is combined with another by-law.

Looking for a float plane trip in Southern Ontario
Dutch replied to 007's topic in General Discussion
That Stanton Air places looks interesting. Secluded fishing not too far away, might be good for a day or two trip. Bass fishing looks to be the the thing with all those lakes though. Just my opinion, but I would be looking further North for fly-in - with Walleye and Pike fishing. Especially since Walleye are getting more scare here in the South, don't catch enough for table-fare anymore. It would be nice to get away to where they are more plentiful and catch a stringer or two. Also, on those smaller lakes I find the small bass soooo aggresive, since they have to compete for food with the big-uns, that you are constantly catching 8"-12" fish. In the end I guess that's not so bad, but for a fly-in trip I would be looking for a little bit more. Again, only my opinion. -

Gotta love those jumbos. Sturgeon through the ice - never would have thought of that. Good work and nice pics/report. -
Looking for a float plane trip in Southern Ontario
Dutch replied to 007's topic in General Discussion
I am just speculating here, but I don't think there are float plane trips that fly out of Toronto. How far North do you want to go on this trip? I looked into a trip a couple of years back. Drive to Sudbury, fly to an Airport further in the boonies, about 2 hours. Catch a float plane there and fly a couple of hours further. I didn't end up going. Good luck with it though and keep us posted on what you find out. -
Snowmobile Accident Claims Two People on Scugog
Dutch replied to JustinHoffman's topic in General Discussion
They don't make the machines too fast, just drivers with a lack of common sense. I wonder where they got that radar gun, that's right - off duty policeman. Condolences to the families. -
Remember to factor in the cost of both taxes, you will pay GST at the border and PST when you register it. Get separate titles for boat, motor, trailer if possible. You will also need to get a trailer safety certificate. Many posts and a lot of information on the web about this. Call the government, I think they may have a pamphlet or similar correspondance on importing a boat. Even after the tax, there are still deals to be had. Boats are more plentiful down there and there are many cases of one-foot-itus, especially in the more southern States. You will probably have luck in Ohio, Georgia is good too from what I have seen browsing around, but further away. Test drive if you can before buying. Those pictures always look real nice....

http://www.garmin.com/products/etrexsummit/ There are 500 way-points according to the above. May want to check about that expandable memory, it does come in handy. Also, the point about the maps is a good one, although if you do just want to mark spots this would do the trick. I got my Magellan at 55% off back in December, good thing I went in Friday night and got it, was back in the store at 9:30 the Saturday morning (looking for maps) and the 4 units they had the night before were gone. If you are taking the plunge, get there early. CT has a return policy, try it out if you are serious. If you get it home and it's not the one for you, take it back, no questions asked!

Who's Spouse/better half fishes with them?
Dutch replied to irishfield's topic in General Discussion
Mine does, she loves it. Sorry, no pictures. -
Seems like a great price. Garmin makes quality products. Colour doesn't add a lot, just a "nice to have." For that price you can't go wrong. You can buy maps with the money you save. Go for it.....

You will be fine, just don't over-do it. My Uncle towed a 17' Stratos with a 90HP Merc for more years than I can remember with a 4 clyinder K-Car station wagon no less. Was a tournament fisherman too. Towed it all the way from Alabama where he bought it from with the same car. I can remember pulling that boat out at the launch at Keene, gravel launch, and having to sit on the hood on the Drivers side to get the thing out. Sure, he sent that car to the wreckers, but probably after at least 12 good years of service. Don't worry about it, hitch it on and get 'er done!

No speed tricks here. I find using a board (or small piece of 1/4" plywood) to clean fish on better than using newspaper. The paper sticks to the slime like crazy and it clings to the skin. Use a board and at least the paper doesn't go all over the place. The board also prevents you from slicing through the paper into your countertop too.

In many areas, cottage/home owners do not own the 15-20 feet surrounding the lake that their home or cottage is on. That is unless they have purchased the "shoreline allowance" from the municipality (not the federal government). I know this to be fact in at least 3 municipalities, Algonquin Highlands to name one. The Municipality owns the right of way to the lake, similar to any road allowance that may form part of the boundaries. Interestingly enough, there is at least one road allowance that is totally submerged on Kashabog Lake that is "owned" wholeheartedly by the municipality. I know this to be fact as I once worked with a public accounting firm that audited many Local Municipalities. Part of our year-end procedures was to evaluate the purchase of these shoreline allowances by local residents. Of course, the shoreline allowance could only be purchased by the resident who owned the lot leading to the shoreline allowance. Many cottagers did this, although many did not need to undertake the expense. The allowance sold for a marginal amount, it was the survey and legal fees that added up to approximately $15,000 per purchased allowance. Now, having said that, this is in more Northern Areas on small lakes, not Lake Ontario. I have read many posts about Goreski's on Scugog being "private" and not open to fishing (either ice or by boat). I don't know the merit of this argument, but I know many will not fish in there, either by understanding or by choice. In any event, I would give most people the benefit of the doubt. If they are asking you to leave, it's hopefully not for the sake of the fish you are after, they probably have a much larger interest in the security of high priced boats (please see the post above on the 85 boats that were broken into). Not that any law-abiding (the reason of this thread to discover the "law" interestingly enough) OFC'er would cause damage to anything that wasn't their own. If in a similar circumstance I would probably state my case, that I don't think that it's illegal to fish there (probably trying to make the person telling me to leave seem like a real knob) pack up my things and leave. No use in starting something that neither party can finish. Also, as previously mentioned, if the cops are called, they will probably ask you to leave to avoid confrontation anyway. I don't think there's much point in going back and trying to prove a point. If someone (or many people for that matter) were to go fish there, more power to them, they may not even run into the same people that made the stink in the first place, but sticking the law in someone’s face is probably not the best thing to do either (whether or not it's right or wrong is another thing). For the record, police do not enforce by-laws. By-laws are made by Municipalities (noise by-laws, parking by-laws and zoning by-laws, for example) and are enforced by Municipal by-law officers. The police can enforce a by-law if specifically asked to do so by a representative of the Municipality in a specific instance. An example would be a young punk with his car music or muffler way too loud (hence breaking a noise by-law). In the end I think police have a much more important job to do than be peace makers and argument settlers (especially when the "law" isn't clear). I prefer to follow the "law" of common sense, after all, is it really that big of a deal, there's a lot of frozen lake out there? Better yet, ask permission first (as was sort-of mentioned in a post above), get them on your side. It's much easier to ask permission than beg forgiveness. If they say no, they say no, but I personally wouldn't go the extent of asking for the deed to the water lot...I think that's asking for an argument....one that neither side will win.

I agree with you, take 400 to 407 East. Stay on the 407 to the very end - Brock Road. Keep going straight through, you will be on Highway 7. Follow Highway 7, going East, to Lakeridge Road, take a right = South. You will get to Taunton Road, take a Left. Follow Taunton To Simcoe, take a right. NOTE - If you take a left to go North on Simcoe, you are on your way to Beaverton. Take a left on to Rossland from Simcoe. Follow Rossland to Ritson. From there you either go left or Right, depending on where you want to get on Ritson. Go back to intersection of Taunton and Simcoe and head North on Simcoe - you will be heading towards Beaverton on Simcoe Street North. Follow this all the way to Hwy. 48, take a left. Follow 48 to Hwy 12 (not far). Take a right on 12 and follow towards Beaverton. This may not be the most direct, but it's the easiest that I know of. It may take 15 minutes longer, but at least you are on major roads and snow shouldn't be an issue. Good Luck

A Christmas Story - hands down. Funniest scene ever is when Santa pushes Ralphie (the pink nightmare) down the slide with a boot to the forehead. It's a classic. I watch it every year.

Hey Burt - yeah mine is the LE model and it did have the battery in there as well as the AAA cartridge. Maybe I lucked out and got both? B2K - was away in London for the weekend and I think I confused the thing (and myself) going around the block 3 times looking for a parking spot - no need for a back-track on that one. Thanks everyone for the comments.

Took the plunge and bought the unit. Pretty interesting so far. Have played around quite a bit and I am impressed so far. Have to buy/get my hands on some detailed maps soon. One drawback I have found is that there is no plug-in for charging. Came with the USB cable, but I'm not sure if it will charge the battery through USB or not - any ideas? There is a mail-in for a free plug, but it takes 6-8 weeks. It has an adapter for putting in AAA's so I will start doing that once the Li-ion wears out. Can't wait to get some detailed maps. Seems like an exceptional unit for the price.

Any opinions on this GPS Unit? It's on sale at CTC starting tommorow, marked down from $460 to $200. I've been in the market for awhile, but don't have a lot of information on this unit. How are the maps of the lakes for Magellan, specifically kawarthas areas? Can you get depth charts and ones showing aids to navigation? Any information is appreciated. Dutch

Granted I have only been driving a truck for 2 winters now, but I don't put anything in the bed and have never had a problem. I have also been told that putting objects in the bed like that voids warranty, if there's any left on the vehicle. I don't know if it is true though. Putting weight in the bed of a truck sounds more like a saftey net/superstition than a good decision to me. It might make people feel beeter, but I don't think it really accomplishes anything. I would suggest using common sense when driving and a good pair of snow tires. If you get stuck or start sliding, I don't think an extra 200 lbs. of weight in the back is going to do anything, so I guess the key is to not start sliding - how do you come by that - common sense in driving in slick conditions. ANyhow - how are you expected to do really good donuts in empy parking lots after a good snowfall with all that extra weight in the back????

First ever and PB muskie caught on the "O" on Thanksgiving Monday. Great fight and nice colours on this one. I will never forget it!
