Go to a dedicated battery proprietor - you will get better advice and service. I have 2 gargantuan 31 series deep cycles that blow the pants off anything you can get at CTC or any interstate for that matter (IMO). With batteries, smaller is generally not good. It is not generally good to discharge a battery. Not using much juice on a 10 hour day is a good thing. Don't skimp on your battery. You may find yourself out on a lake one day with no big motor - you don't want to run out of juice.

Have you seen Stand by Me? Classic scene. LOL.

Wire line is generally used to get deeper. On smaller lakes, there is probably not much use for it. Walleye generally aren't found so deep that wire line would be needed. Maybe a dipsy diver for trolling deeper. If you are having trouble getting down deep I guess you could use it....but I don't think it's common.

What lake were you on? I didn't know there were slot sizes on any Kawartha Lakes this year - do you mean proposed slot sizes? Looks like a good haul - congrats.

GPS Magellan Explorist 500 LE for $200 at CTC
Dutch replied to BFSC Kevin's topic in General Discussion
I bought it at that price from CTC in December. I like it, but have nothing to compare it too. The latest version of their "direct route" (mapping) software was about $180 CDN, download from their website. The latest version of the lake software for the Kawatrhas area was about $160, so you are looking at some additional costs. It is virtually useless as-is out of the box with the base map included, but then again I wanted to use it for driving directions and with the lake map. You will also need to buy at least a 1GB Sandisk SD card. Some of the other brands apparently aren't recognized by the unit. The LE model does not include a Lithium Ion rechargeable battery. It includes a battery pack that gets power from 3 AAA size batteries. It also does not include a charging cable, other than the USB one, but that does not matter as there should be a mail-in form for a free one from Magellan. I really lucked out and there was a Lithium Ion battery with mine. I don't know why, as it says right in the box what is included and that was not listed. You can order one from Magellan for about $30-$40, which I reccomend if you don't luck out like I did. Having said all the above, I like the unit. I like the colour screen and the menu set-up. It has always worked and not let me down. It picks up a signal fairly quickly and the map response is quick as well. One thing I didn't like is the customer service. Long story (nothing to do with the unit) but I hope you never have to call. The battery life from the rechargeable definitely lasts for a day on the water or in the truck. I don't know how long the battery pack (with AAA's) lasts as I have never used it. Keep the back light on low, it eats the batteries quick. Great, phenominal, deal IMO at $200, but at full price - not so much. Just remember about the additinal maps costs. -
Thanks for all the positive comments. We are really excited. Definitely will have to have some sort of a get-together once the deck is done. I think that will be the first project once we get settled. I was looking at some ideas on the net when I got home from work today. All I know is it has to be wide enough, at least in one area for either a screened room or one of those gazebo things with the mosquito webbing. Let me know if anyone knows a good website for deck plans or if you have any suggestions. Probably building this myself (with some help, of course) so I may be able to do some "custom" things. Anybody use lexan or plexi for railings? Will also probably build some sort of platform deck down near the water for lounging and near a fire pit. So many ideas.....so much work, but in the end it will be worth it.

Well, back a month or so ago, I made a post about every one's opinions on buying waterfront. Many offered up great advice and my wife and I appreciate it. Well, Sunday we put in an offer on a place on Buckhorn Lake, Emerald Isle area. After going back a forth a couple of times, they accepted our offer based on condition of selling our place - great more stress and wait as we had not yet listed. Well we listed this morning, had 3 visits today and sold the place for 99.6% of list. It worked out great for both parties as they are in an apartment and could meet the closing date we put on the other place, July 20. We basically gave ourselves 2 weeks to sell this place to meet that date and, in the end, priced it right. Just a couple of formalities - house inspection on our end and on theirs, not expected to cause any problems as the place we are going into is 4 years old and ours is 8. I wanted to be on the water by the time I was 40, made it almost 10 years early - hopefully I can retire that much earlier than expected too! Mid-Summer on the lake, can't wait. Thanks for the advice to those that gave it, it help us focus on what was important and gave us a great perspective from many different points of view. Here's a couple of pics I took of the house (yep, there will definitely be a deck attached to that ledger soon enough): Outside, from the waterfront: Outside, a closer shot: Inside, towards water, front great room: Just realized I didn't take any of the water, 105 ft of frontage, NW facing across a bay that is about 600 m across. Located right in the centre of Upper Buckhorn - go left to Gannons Narrows and into Pigeon or right through Harrington Narrows and into Chemong.

My condolences, Lew and family. I remember reading about Eddy's new place back not too long ago, he sounded real happy and excited about it. I'm sure he's off to an even better place now.

The railway is good. It runs from the point at Hiawatha on the North side of the lake to Tick Island on the south side. Tick Island is very small and is marked with a light on the North side. There are channel markers just to the North of the Island. If you line up the channel markers with the channel markers on the North side, you will be in the right spot. In case you don't know, Roseneath, it is on the South side of the lake. The railway is a fair jaunt up the lake from Roseneath though - if using a tinny you are talking about an 8 k.m.+ ride. Depending on the lake conditions, that can either be long or short. There's a fairly big Island near Roseneath, White Island, try on the North side there. Good depth and weed growth. Generally look for weedlines in 8-12 fow for walleye. You won't catch pike in Rice, I hope. Lots of crappie and bluegill and a ton of bass, if you are there in season. Also a good spot is the mouth of the Otonabee on the North side. Depending on your boat it could be a bit of a jaunt to get to, probably 10 k.m or so. North side, just further West of the point at Hiawatha. You can pretty much catch fish anywhere on that lake, just look for green new-growth coontail. I always find it holds more fish than cabbage, but maybe that's just me. Good luck!

Hello all. A friend of mine just recently bought a trailer on Rice Lake and is now looking for a boat to do some fishing and take his 2 girls for a ride. Looking for an aluminum or a bow-rider. He is looking for something wide and stable, probably 14'+, with deep gunnels as his kids are young. No real preference between tiller and console. Needs a motor to match the boat, minimum 9.9 HP, but would prefer higher. If anyone has any leads on a good quality used boat in the $8K range, please respond or send me a PM. We have been checking out the trader, but it seems like he is always the one to call the day after it has been sold. Thanks in advance.

Fishing the rivers for Pickerel from a noob perpective
Dutch replied to wask's topic in General Discussion
Where on the "O" are you fishing? North of Parkhill, up to the A&W dam = carp, rock bass and some smallies. Usually below the dam at lock 19 for walleye, evening is the best bite. If the dam is flowing fast - tough fishing from shore, your bait will never get down and when it does - snag city. From a boat - try weed in 10-12 fow in the a.m. and p.m. During the day I have never, ever caught a walleye on the river. From what I have been hearing, the bite is so far off in the Kawarthas right now, may as well wait for bass season and concentrate on crappies in the meantime, they are better eating (IMO) and more importantly, more abundant than walleye now. -
I don't think you use a pre-amp for subs, but I am not an expert, by any stretch. Check here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/index.php? http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/ http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/ Great information.

WTG, great big blue. Nice tunes too, lol.

If you are using that canned spray foam be careful to read the instructions. Some brands will only work if you hold the can upside down. Wear eye protection and DO NOT get it on your skin. I learned the hard way. Use gloves and wear long sleeves. I think I still have a bald spot where I had to shave off a bunch or arm hair..... Good luck with the project.

Always like reading your reports.

2 questions dealing with new boat recommendations
Dutch replied to ssauvain's topic in General Discussion
I secong group 31. You can use that batery all day and still have some juice to spare. Get one at a dedicated battery shop, they will give you good advice. I got 2 no-nmaes for a good price, saved money on the name brand stuff and just as good. -
Over the long term it has always been best to float. I would not suggest locking in for 10 years. Here is what my wife and I did: Float with a cap, but base your payment on either a lower amortization (say 20 years instead of 25) or a higher rate. Most payments are determined with the cap rate, but if the interest rate is lower than the cap rate, you are ahead of the game as you are paying as though the interest rate is say, 6% instead of the currest rate which is around 5.5%. You will come out ahead and you don't have to worry about your payment fluctuating when the rate changes. Another way to do it is just say you want to pay $X each week. As long as that is equal to or higher than the payment determined with the cap rate, the bank is fine with it. Always make payments weekly! If you bank does not offer that, go to another bank. I do not think the rate is going to go up quickly over the next 5 years, so I predict it will be better to float.

Photo ID and birth certificate are still fine as far as I know. If in doubt call ahead, probably wouldn't hurt to do that anyway. Price for gas last night was 99.9 - 102.9. I saw it this morning at 108.9 - go figure. If you are going through away from heavy traffic, you will be fine on the 401. 407 is a nice stretch though. Can't lose on either road.
