Ah, there are nets all over the lake all summer.
-
I have only been here 4 years, in that time the fishing seems to be getting worse, the weather hasn't been great aside from this year, and this year the water has been low so who knows if that has had an impact. One thing is certain, this time frame coincides with commercial fishing on the lake on a larger scale then what had been happening. I know this is hard to accept for some of you, but netting a pile of fish out of a lake, including a large by catch that is wasted, tends to mean that there will be fewer fish in the lake. I know, It's a difficult concept for some.

I bought a Browning BPS in 20ga last year. So far i have shot maybe 400-500 rnds through it with zero problems, and this is mostly using the cheapest shells you can buy. The others are right that a 12ga is more versatile but if upland birds will be your likely focus you can't go wrong with a 20. The bps is also one of the few 20 ga shotguns you can find that is built on a smaller frame purpose built for a a 20ga while the 870 for example is a 12ga frame even in 20ga, so the bps is a bit better handling imo. I can't say what the prices are like now but last year I bought from Lebarons, I bought the membership and saved quite a bit over the other major retailers.
-
lebarons would be my suggestion, I bought a 20ga browning bps from them last year, got it quickly and the price was the best I could find. As far as I know there isn't much in North Bay and what there is is really pricey.

The don't thaw things in warm water or only thaw things in the fridge is pretty silly, are you going to cook the fish? If yes, it won't matter how you thaw it aside from change in the consistency of the fish, it will be safe, works for anything.

I know a thing or two about weather, and there is some bad advice on that site.

Well golly gee then where do I get a net and a permit to net a lake? If you can't find pickeral from a store you could always follow a net boat around nipissing and pick up the by catch, some of it might be edible. I watched a net boat yesterday i didn't see them catch a single pickeral but they did pull a couple dozen of those, maybe a white sucker, out of the net and throw them back to the gulls. Surely they don't do they same with other species of fish while taking part in this traditional power boat gill net stringently managed fishery. But hey every fish you eat is gill netted on lakes like Nipissing so no harm done.

Ok, I was trying to stay out of this but some of you don't have a clue. When all of these treaties were signed the natural world was looked at as mostly inexhaustible that is why these same treaties should not be used today. Also another poster mentioned that some groups seemingly have a hate on for natives, well I have a hate on for citiots and their children who have been indoctrinated into the left wing group think that tells over and over of the noble savage and the keepers of the earth Bull, it is paternalistic crap. They are no different than we are, they are just as likely to abuse the resource and since their taxes don't pay to maintain our resources they may be even less likely to protect it than we are. Take off your liberal colored glasses for god sakes, join us in the real world. I have told this story here before, but in Nova Scotia, after they won the right to net the salmon rivers, the river nearest to my home is only a few minutes form the nearest reserve, instead of netting the river they continually broke into a science station on the river that was tracking fish numbers as a part of a stocking program. The fish were trapped in the ladder and were easily netted. It took months of complaints before anything was done, eventually a number of arrests were made, though I doubt they were ever prosecuted, that used to be a beautiful area, it is now a native booze can garbage dump. Few people go there to fish anymore, but then there really aren't any fish now. I hope it goes better here, but for those of us that have been paying attention the science behind the harvest on Nippising is shaky at best, must be the racism, after all the biologist that is most responsible for the management of the lake is now on the band payroll, no conflict of interest there, nope. -
Thats the whole point, business owners are above us other riff raff who just work for a living, it's ok if they rip us off, we deserve it for not being one of them.

Actually there is no official darkness in Yellowknife right now, while the sun may set it doesn't go far enough below the horizon to be fully dark, it is one of the things i miss most about living there, 24 hours of daylight/twilight is pretty cool.

I boated past a flock between the Manitou islands and North Bay yesterday, at least 200 strong, probably closer to 300.
-
I have been at the North Bay marina most days the past couple weeks, the water level is down 1-2 inches in that time.

Wow. That's exactly what i have, and that makes sense to me, thanks for the replies guys, i was thinking of getting a ctek charger I see at Canadian tire, i have replaced my battery this spring and I think my charger may have killed the last one.
-
At some point I think I was told not to charge my trolling battery while it was wired into the boat, so i always disconnect it before I charge it, i was thinking of getting a new charger, maybe something I could mount in the boat, if the trolling motor is the only item on the trolling battery circuit and the trolling motor is unplugged what would be the harm in charging the battery in the boat?

Normally the first week isn't great in front of town, i half expected an earlier start tho given the ice out and weather conditions, that said in two days fishing i haven't caught a pickerel or seen one caught, maybe ive just missed them.

It is scary low, I didn't hit anything, but i thought i was going to a couple times. I fished off of North Bay for a couple hours this morning starting around 8, caught a couple perch, I saw another perch boated, there didn't seem to be much going on. Went for a quick cruise around the manitou islands, and while I probably had no less than 3 feet of water it is a bit unnerving to see a rock pile come at you. It's the one you never saw before and are now suddenly praying you don't hit. yikes. Sometimes I think these polarized glasses are best at scaring me.

Being a shift worker I find people who expect to get the weekend off a little amusing, seriously tho I am working this weekend. Looking on the bright side, since Nipissing is so low I think it is going to be a nightmare at the boat launch getting people on and off the water, some of them might want to bring a step ladder, so at least I won't be in the middle of that circus.

That is petty but for some reason im not surprised, but i must say the first year with my dog was a bit rough as he had never had any training and was almost 1 yr when we got him, but now i couldn't imagine having a better dog, I would definitely do it again. -

As far as I know it was policy of the animal shelter, and done when I adopted him, this was in Yellowknife. -

thats my pup, he is a shepard/lab and something big, 150lbs, he's a bit lame right now, hurt himself a couple days ago and I hope its nothing serious. The only thing i disliked about the adoption process was the 4 page questionnaire i had to fill out and the cost, for a dog that nobody wanted he cost me close to $300 to adopt, i think that included the neutering which i was forced to get done as well. I didn't really expect that and i know they need to raise money somehow but rescuing a dog and paying so much for the privilege of doing so was a suprise. -
i dont think the refs are biased one way or the other, i just think they are making more mistakes, it is almost as though the refs themselves have bought into the "its the fastest and hardest game to referee in the world" that kind of statement puts them above criticism because 'no one else could do better', and some of the worse calls or non calls ive seen this playiff year were made when the players were mostly still with the ref standing right next to them. Seems to me it has gone to their heads, that said I think the biggest problem with the NHL, and it is related to a lot of the fans out there, is the let em play in the playoffs mentality. It is a difficult game to call but it is made much more so by the inconsistent officiating both during the regular season and then of course payoffs. This is likely made worse by having two different referees, with two different approaches to calling a game, on the ice at the same time. Basically no knows from game to game which of the marginal infractions will be called or not called, it cheapens the game imo, call the game the same year round, full stop.

I bought a lighter version of the "ugly stick" line at CT for 49.99 last week, I don't know much much about it, but i needed a cheap spinning rod and it seemed decent.
