mepps spinner....black fury or a red and white comet. Most versatile bait going. Cast....reel in...maybe vary retrieve here and there (sstops, speed ups, break the surface here and there), and you'll catch fish.
all of mine are yellow, orange, or black. As others have said, i don't *think* it matters but sometimes wonder if contrast along the side might matter for lures that roll a bit....ie. zara spooks, crazy crawlers, others that might flash their sides.
Maybe i'm dumb but I can't see holding a pike by the eye sockets could do anything other than damage. Is this even in question -- misfish, are you serious or joking around?
Aurora trout.
Seriously though - not everyone is going ot know the difference btwn a pike and a musky (half my friends certainly don't). I remember as a kid my dad catching this huge pike on a crazy crawler......biggest pike i had seen. Looking back now, it was clearly a musky. W e just didn't know any better.
I remember reading about some study where they poked the eyes out of a bunch of pike to study how they survived with only their lateral lines, and apparently they were fine. So, i wouldn't sweat it.
Dr. Salvenius -- this sound familiar? Anything you've ever read about that was published?
Any recommendations for the east side of the lake, just a couple of mins south of the marina? Looks like we may be limited to canoes so won't be able to go very far.
Or, does anyone know where i can find a good map or depth chart online? There's one on fishhawk that is pretty popular but i have a feeling its kind of weak. A depth chart would be fantastic.
Heading up to Balsam - any recommendations? I am not at all familiar with the lake. Not asking for your secret spots (thoughalways happy to hear about them), but hoping someone can point me in the direction of whatever spots are well known.
My friends will likely want to catch bass or pickerel. I'll be pitching big spinnerbaits for muskies...
After 17 yrs our in-boat fishfinder has finally called it quits. Time for a new one. Any recommendations?
We generally fish in <30 feet of water and use the finder mostly for depth and structure. Rarely fish deep or open water fish, so not sure that power is really that important.
How useful is...
- colour?
- dual cone?
- power
- resolution
Also, any favourite brands? I generally prefer easy and durable over powerful-but-complicated-and-or-delicate stuff.
the lateral line in trout? Fill me in -- did not know to remove anything. I never fish for trout but OFTEN get them at the grocery store......is there something i can do to improve the taste.
As for the others....
SMB - actually quite good if you clean them quickly (which makes all the difference in the world with bass). Light flesh,a nd almost a nutty flavour
pike - my favourite if cleaned well and from deeper water (vs. shallow/weedy/warm)
walleye - can't go wrong
perch - teh best
LMB - won\t touch them
Muskies - YUM!!
(kidding)
btw - something everyone should know...the fat in fish is where the heavy metals are stored....if you want to eat "cleaner" meat, be sure to cut out the belly part (and anywhere else there is a lot of fat)
Report it. Now. if you haven't already. You'll be surprised how much they can learn from what might be left in that pipe....may be able to track down the culprit, if there is one.
