I would strongly support no kill, no live bait, single barbless hooks only zone like we currently have on certain rivers, but only on certain stretches. But not a complete no kill everywhere. But what I would like to see most is lower limits in zone 16. Nothing wrong with keeping a few but too many people treat our rivers like a grocery store.

Whatever you decide think about paying the extra $$ for glass lenses. Any style of plastic lenses will scratch and the clarity just isn't quite as good. I have a pair of costas with the 580 glass lens and they're fantastic. No experience with Maui so I can't compare. I suspect you'll be pretty happy with either brand. If you do go with costa's make sure you find a pair that fits you. They have many different sizes of frames so be careful if you're considering buying them online.

It baffles me how people always take a limit of the biggest fish they catch and then wonder why the fishing isn't what it used to be. Selectively taking a fish now and then is one thing but culling fish down is another. Those bass are such slow growing fish. We can catch a lot of fish now, or harvest a lot, but if we do the harvesting we won't be doing the catching much longer. I know it's legal practice, so someone feel free to flame me for thinking of the future of our fisheries.

Well the drought this year brought on lower water levels and higher temps and that has made things a little different this year for sure. So that may explain this year. Also rivers are dynamic and constantly change due to erosive processes and spots constantly change over the years. We've had a few years of warmer summer weather and that can enhance juvenile bass survival so maybe that's why there are so many small fish around. I've noticed this in other locations. However river bass are a slow growing fish, a fish that's 18inches + might very well be 20 years old. So if those big ones are being harvested you can see the problem. Far as the walleye, I don't fish them, so no insights there.

And to think the Grand is very clean now compared to what is was a few decades ago. There are some many emerging chemicals of concern and no one really knows their impact on the environment or people. Very interest episode on nature proposing that chemicals in our environment are partly to blame for societies obesity problem. And unlike diet and exercise it's not something we can change. This is one reason why I don't consume fish from southern Ontario.

Awesome fish man. I've heard stories of pink runs in several tribs but have never seen it. Do you know if they run every year? I've been told it's every 3 or 4?

Golden Dorado Those taimen would be great too, something about a 100lb trout sounds exciting. But those 2 are more of a dream. More realistically this winter I'd like a 30" snook on the fly.

Sure it is. But we're not supposed to discuss it because it's an awkward and difficult topic. So we're just expected to look away and ignore it.

Nice report. I've had a lot of fun targeting carp on the fly too this summer. Anyone with a fly rod looking for a challenge should give them a try. I've actually had a lot of success with large (size 2), dark colored wooly buggers. I've been targeting cruising fish and twitching it on bottom as they get close. Must be feeding on different food sources.

Bet this is more effective than the alabama rig. http://video.ca.msn.com/watch/video/russians-on-boat-drop-grenade/1gltfk807?from=en-ca-infopane

What is the best 2pc rod for all around use??

Hard to go wrong with a St Croix Avid in that price range. Lifetime warranty to boot. -
Yep, they are fantastic. If you look on steep and cheap once in a while they come up. I got a pair for $90 a few years back. As long as you're not terribly picky on the frames you can get great deals.

I think the internet plays a large role in this. Once a spot gets mentioned on a board like this the pressure really does go up, I've seen it myself a couple of times. Unfortunately too many of those spots could be in trouble if people don't use a little more common sense, they just can't handle the harvest.

Nothing fancy in terms of flies. Wolly buggers and clouser minnows accounted for most of the fish. Key is to find out how active the fish are. Sometimes stripping in quickly is the ticket, sometimes you almost have to drag it across the bottom. When you're fishing slow, strikes are a little harder to detect but it helps to watch the end of your fly line for any unexpected movement. Bass are usually much less subtle than trout so the line will usually jump when they hit. If you've got any more questions just send me a message. If you've had fun fishing trout, bass on the fly rod are a riot. Hook into a couple pound smallie you'll see why.

I was a little limited this weekend so I went to a smaller system that's got quantity but not a lot of quality. Good fun with the fly rod though. I got a handful of 12-14's but those are generally the big ones there, though once in a while a bigger one turns up including one that bested me this time. No report as the camera batteries were out. Next time.

I've heard that Simcoe has a lot of invasive rusty crayfish. The rusties can grow larger and maybe a more difficult prey item for smallies so they've switched to something easier. Also they maybe they're reducing native crayfish #'s and so smallies are eating other familiar prey.

Nice fishin guys. I was thinking of heading that way today but I had a feeling you may have fished it hard, glad I went elsewhere.

If you were Staal why you want to leave a perennial cup contender for the leafs. Hmm, battling for cups or 12th place. Besides rumor is if he leaves he'll be joining his brother in Carolina.

Given the water temps you may want to think about fishing for something other than trout. Not only will you likely kill any fish you catch due to stress, they also won't be actively feeding at these temps so the fishing will be slow. Probably have more fun bothering the bass and pans.

The market and all the shops are up and running, as long as the weather cooperates any weekend would be fine.

Also may have been chubs. Sometimes they hit flies but aren't big enough to actually eat them.

Freshwater research facility shutting down in Kenora

Seems they're taking the ignorance is bliss approach regarding our environment. If they eliminate science they'll be no reason not to build oil pipelines everywhere. Oh well, clean water never benefit anyone.... -
The loss of groundwater fed streams and spawning habitat is a bigger problem than any roe hunters or charters. No limit reduction or change in regs will make a difference without our coldwater streams. This is going to be the biggest threat to our trout populations in general in the near future. If every angler who pounds the banks or takes a charter gave a single day a year to volunteer helping restore our coldwater streams it would be the best thing they could do to improve the fishery.

I've caught cats close to 20lb and I certainly agree with this. Also I do think water temps play a role too. Despite the nice weather the rivers are still cold, once they warm up a bit I find the fish have a bit more energy. Nice fish bigworm. They're fun to chase once in a while.

I pretty sure the smell is chlorine but is there anything else that smells similar that it could be? Thanks for the help.
