Neighbor kid just shot a bb through my living room window!
timmeh replied to splashhopper's topic in General Discussion
Can't really fault you for calling the police, though maybe best if you informed the dad prior. But what if the dad keeps the gun for a week and then gives it back to the kid. Who knows? Maybe this is the wakeup call both kid and parents need. -
1. No many factors influence this including water temps of the particular lake, wind, depth, and others. 2. yes as per #1 every system is a little different 3.River generally do not turnover unless the have the necessary conditions for the water column to stratify (very slow current, and sufficient depth). The lower stretch of the Grand is an exception in that it can stratify (but even then it's usually only for short periods and will therefore not experience turnover as in lakes). This doesn't mean that turnover doesn't affect river fishing though. Stretches of river downstream of a lake or reservoir that does see fall turnover can be significantly affected. 4. Not necessarily, it depends what you're fishing for.

I completely disagree with closing the creeks. Closing the tribs would prevent a significant portion of the public the opportunity to fish for salmon. It's a public resource and not everyone can afford a boat and all the equipment to fish the big lakes. Besides while some natural reproduction takes place the salmon fishery is essentially dependent on stocking to sustain it.

If you're set on roe then you've been given a few options. But you can always cast some hardware out at them too. Another option to consider.

The thing is there is no universal best bait. If there was everyone would only be using it instead of having a tackle box full of lures. Depth, water temp, turbidity, current, weather conditions, natural food sources and many other factors determine the best baits for whatever particular situation you're fishing. I know you're looking for easy answers on here, but they don't always exist.

Haven't had as much time as I'd like to get out over the past little while due to other commitments, and sundays are a real decision between fishing and football, but I've managed to find a few fish. Only made it out once for some late season specks and while picking up a few, the big guys I was hoping for didn't come out to play. Still fun nonetheless, nice colours as always. Decided to try out some new water I'd been wanting to for a while, and despite the erratic weather lately managed a few nice smallies. My attempt at a decent solo shot.. My camera is not the best for shots like that so I decided to make use of the underwater feature... And with the recent rains decided to hit the tribs for some steelie action. Wasn't sure what to expect as the rivers were obviously crowded but still landed 6 fish, while losing about that many. Half the fish were just shakers and a few bigger ones were mixed in. Didn't hook anything huge but just about every fish put on an aerial show. Love the energy of these early season fish. Also lots of smolts around, which while annoying at times, are a nice sign for the future. Not many pics as my camera batteries died pretty early unfortunately but here's one of the littler guys. Also saw a few chinnies making their move upstream. Nice to see they passed through snagger city. Camera was already dead so I couldn't get a pic but one of the chinnies was a real beast, possibly upwards of 20 lbs. Here's a smaller one instead...

Absolutely beautiful fish man . Those browns have some great colours. Always nice to see those bigger fish let go, great for the future of the fishery.

Good stuff Justin. There definitely are some fish around. And good advice for protecting the smolts, they are everywhere which is great for the future.

Any public access points on Puslinch Lake?
timmeh replied to shimano25's topic in General Discussion
Not overfished, but over harvested. Guys leaving with pails, plastic bags and anything that holds fish. But don't dare say anything too them though. A guy fishing with 6 kids is clearly right to take home 7 limits of fish at every possible opportunity. :wallbash: Still a few around, but you're not the first to say not as many as there used to be. -

He's messing with you, people are there for a reason. -
Great day man. That leaf is a nice touch in the second photo. Might as well help the chinny out, if he's made it that far on his own. No need to worry about natural selection for chinnies in the great lakes

As mentioned much more shore access at Shades Mills. -
Check ebay. That will give you more options since you can ship it in. There are some good deals to be had from time to time.

The main reason I will spend money on a reel like a stradic is for durability. Mine has taken an absolute beating over 3 years, been submerged accidentally dozens of times and still works great. Prior to this I had cheaper reels and while I still caught fish they never really lasted too long.

Apparently everyone's getting in on the act..... http://www.cbc.ca/canada/newfoundland-labrador/story/2010/09/13/salmon-poaching-mayor-913.html

I'm just curious, but how can you guarantee it was a hit? Did you actually see the underwater salmon chase down the stationary bait and hit it? W\ Or was it just because the hook was in the mouth?
-
Honestly I suspect that a significant percent of people who are flossing don't realize they are snagging fish. Since they are hooked around the mouth often, many believe the fish are hitting every time. It can be hard explaining to someone that they're snagging. As for stopping, I would bet that even if most people realized what they're doing, they wouldn't stop. A salmon run brings out some of the most ridiculous anglers (apologies to those who legitimately fish for them, I know some of you do). It's there one chance a year to catch them and catching them is all they care about, technique is not relevant.

Couldn't start a post in the fishing news section so i'll put this here. http://www.thestar.com/living/food/article/857935--genetically-modified-salmon-is-ready-for-dinner Tim

Welcome to the board, and nice fish. Must have been a blast on the ultra light.

Good stuff. Think I'm gonna have to get into a few small streams this fall before times up.

Why are big channel catfish flesh rubbery after cooked?
timmeh replied to shimano25's topic in General Discussion
Maybe the really big ones taste like rubber since they've bioaccumulated so many chemicals over their lifetime they actually are part rubber. -

Who wants to pound the rivers with me this Saturday?
timmeh replied to BillsTheBassMan's topic in General Discussion
Dependng on my baseball tourney I may have some time in the morning. If you want to walk a little, or 6km or so, I've got a spot for you. -
I don't seem to find many good deals at the shows. Maybe a few tax free deals or a couple bucks off but nothing major if that's what you're waiting for.

The salmon arrived last Friday, Aug 20 @ 5:23 in the AM. They will run until exactly Tuesday, Oct 5 @ 10:33. Just couldn't resist. If you've been on the board in the last week you'll know why. But to answer your question, yes, if you look around a little you may get into a few.
