Song Description
An emotional song written by a parent who has seen their child suffer and felt helpless. This song relates to all parents who, at one time or another, feel this helplessness. The tempo is slow and the chorus is emotional and catchy. Easy to sing along to, lyrics are simple but emotive.
Story Behind the Song
My son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in July of 2008 at the age of 3. This song is written as a parent who is witnessing their child in pain and feels helpless. I watched him going from a normal 3 year old, to being pinned down by strangers coming at him with needles, multiple times a day.Although it was written from my perspective of diabetes, if relates to any parent who has felt helpless while their child is suffering.
Lyrics
Once in a while
I lie beside you and watch you sleep
Your tiny hand
In mine as I listen to you breathe
You're small but your so strong
You shouldn't have to take this on
If only I could spin the world the other way...
But I'm not superman
And I sure as hell can't fly
I can't wipe off every teardrop
Or be there all the time oh
You know I'm supposed to save you
From all the hurt you have in life
I can't tell you everything's alright
And look you in the eye'm
Not superman
Cause Superman don't cry
I held you close
I kept you warm
I gave my life to you
But I'm not that strong
you slipped and fell and I
Lost control of you
Your so small but your so strong
You shouldn't have to take this on
But you just smile and say,
Daddy I'm ok
Well I'm not superman
And I sure as hell can't fly
I can't wipe off every teardrop
Or be there all the time oh
You know I'm supposed to save you
From all the hurt you have in life
I can't tell you everything's alright
And you in the eye'm
Not superman
Cause Superman don't cry...
