Hey Everyone, I set up my camera on my balcony yesterday to do a time lapse of the Detroit River. Have a look and watch in HD! http://bit.ly/dpwQE6

I posted some pics about a week ago from up north and here are the rest of them...enjoy! I'll start off with a couple loon shots. It was my second last night there and I realized I hadn't taken a single loon shot yet. I heard a loon calling out on the lake so I jumped in the kayak and went to find it. after about 15mins of kayaking I was within range to get some shots... incase you were wondering what a loon call looks like....here's a visual Here's a 10 minute exposure of some star trails with some help from the moon. I had the moon at my back which illuminated the bog in the foreground to give a day/night sort of look. Now for the rest of the landscape type shots before I get into the panos Here are 2 photos from the previous post but I HDR'd them this time This is Sidney Creek right near Golden Eagle Camp in Elk Lake Now for the panos This first one is on Lake Nipissing in North Bay. These next 3 are from Esker Lakes Provincial Park and they're all HDR

I'm currently at my parents property in Kirkland Lake right now and with the weather being sub-par today, I decided to use my blackberry as a modem and post some shots from the last couple days. This first one is from the shore of Lake Nipissing in North Bay. The power steering pump went in my Jeep just outside North Bay so I decided to make the most of my time there and get out for some photos. I also did a pano of this same scene that I'll post when I get back to my computer in Windsor with all my editing software. These next 2 are from highway 672 which runs from highway 66 to highway 101. The first one is a bog and the second is Wynn Lake, right near the entrance of Esker Lakes Provincial Park I also HDR'd the bog and Wynn Lake photos and I'll post them along with the Nipissing pano late next week. This final one is from last night. I had the moon at my back which lit up the foreground to give a sort of day/night feel.

awesome shot Dan! Moose photos are on my to-do list for this year....hopefully I can find one as co-operative as that guy.
-
thanks guys....the Canon 1D MK IV retails for about $5200.00 and the Canon 70-200 lens is around $2100.00.

Thanks for checking them out guys! Twocoda, that's a good idea for the next contest. I haven't heard of any lately to enter but if I do find one, I'll open up a poll on here as well as my facebook group to see which I should enter. And the silhouettes are my faves as well....mainly the first one however I've re-edited it to brighten it up just a bit more....revised version can be found at the link below for those interested.

I went up to the Kirkland Lake area once again this past week for a bit of a family vacation. I brought all my gear up but wasn't planning on actually doing much shooting. I just wanted to do some fishing, relaxing, and not being in Windsor. Some friends of the family who live on a lake one over from ours told us of a family of loons on their lake and offered to take me out for some photos.... hard to pass up that chance.... here's what I came back with....enjoy! and lastly, 2 of my favorites from the bunch

As I was editing the photos from Wide Mouth Mason and ZZ Top yesterday, I had an idea. A time lapse is basically just a bunch of still photos played one after the other. I took roughly 800 photos during the concert (first 3 songs of each set) so I decided to try something out. Let me know what you think.....
-
I had the opportunity to shoot ZZ Top and Wide Mouth Mason last night here in Windsor....enjoy The entire album can be seen here --> http://bit.ly/94nw8e ZZ Top Wide Mouth Mason

3 shots from my balcony of the storm that just passed through Windsor.....enjoy

I have also heard good things about the 10-22 but I've never used it personally. for wide angle shots I use a Canon 14 mm f/2.8L or a Canon 16-35 f/2.8 L. With the 14 there is almost 0 distortion and vignetting but a bit is noticed with the 16-35. But as far as price goes, the 10-22 is your best bet.

Hey Victor, The loon photos and bear photos are actually the same sharpness when zoomed in on. I think its a bit of an optical illusion because there's more of a cluttered background with the bear shots. And those star photos are only one photo each. One 15 minute exposure at f/8 ISO 800 for each of those shots.
-
I headed back up to the Kirkland Lake area last week for about 6 days to take some photos....here's result....enjoy! All the loon shots were taken with a Canon 1D MK IV with a 500mm lens + 2x extender from a kayak The bear shots were also taken with the 1D + 500 + 2x extender...however not from a kayak Star photos were each 15 second exposures with a Canon 5D mk II and a Canon 14 mm f/2.8L lens. ISO 800 @ f/8

We had some pretty cool lightning roll through here in Windsor tonight so I set the camera out on the balcony and took some photos. I had my camera taking continuous 5 second exposures. Once I uploaded all the photos to my computer, I selected all the ones that had lightning in them (53 in total) and opened them in iMovie. Once in iMovie, all the photos are placed one after the other and voila, a time lapse is born.....enjoy

This weekend I went up to my family's property near Kirkland Lake and tested out the new cameras and lenses a bit. Most of my time was spent with Canon, my 9 wk old female Chocolate Lab so I didn't take a whole lot of photos but here's a few... may as well start off with one of Canon Now for some Loons. The loons were I guess the best test for my 1D MK IV and 500 lens + 2x extender because they were all shot handheld from a kayak. So IS and autofocus did really well. Here's a shot of the moon on a cloudy night. Canon 1D MK IV with 500 mm lens + 2x extender on a wimberley head and Gitzo cf tripod Here's a 30 second exposure well after sunset...anybody guess how I got the trees to be so lit up? and lastly 2 sunset shots

I've wanted to upgrade all my gear for a while now and things have just sort of worked out and allowed that to happen. So I made a trip to Henrys here in windsor and purchased this stuff from left to right Canon EOS 1D MK IV body, Canon 2x extender, Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 L, Canon 14mm f/2.8 L, Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 L, Canon 500mm f/4 L, Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 L, Canon 5D MK II body. Also picked up a Gitzo Carbon Fiber tripod and a Wimberley head as shown below with the 1D and the 500mm I'm heading up to the Kirkland Lake area tomorrow and hope to put this stuff to the test. hopefully I'll have some shots to post in a week when I return

Hey Mike, here's the link to that video http://bit.ly/d8jSrI And just to sum the vid up, the goal is to allow as little light into the camera as possible. So closing up the aperture, using a low ISO, using ND filters, and shooting on overcast days are a few of the things you can do to achieve this. And when I say closing up the aperture, I'm talking setting it to around f22 at times. The higher the aperture value, the less light it allows in, and the smaller the aperture value is, the more light it allows in....ex. f2.8=wide open, gonna let in tons of light....f22=going to let in very little light. Most of that is talked about in the vid but I figured I'd add a bit more to it. Oh and a tripod is a MUST. Hope this helps

love the colours in those pics....congrats on the new camera!

lol nah man they don't suck.....all the shots are good....that last one just stood out because not many people would look at that and see a potential photo
