Have you ever tried to learn a new fishing tactic?
splashhopper replied to splashhopper's topic in General Discussion
I forgot to mention my mild affair with carping.. when all else fails, i grab a can of Delmonte corn and put 4-5 pieces on a bait hook with a couple of splits shots about a foot above. Hasn't failed me yet and the action can be amazing when I hook in to a big one. 10-20lbs is common around here, can't wait to get in to a 30 lb + -
Carp invasion fear causes states to sue

Fearing an invasion of the Great Lakes by the voracious Asian carp, five states are suing the U.S. government and Chicago's water department in federal court. Fisherman Ronnie Hopkins, left, and his assistant, Armondo pull a massive Asian carp from Lake Barkley, Ky. (Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources/Associated Press)Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Minnesota and Pennsylvania are demanding stronger action to keep Asian carp out of the Great Lakes. A lawsuit filed Monday in U.S. District Court in northern Illinois seeks an order to close Chicago shipping locks and gates that could provide a pathway to Lake Michigan for the fish. The U.S. Supreme Court refused twice this year to order the locks closed. The Ontario government filed a legal brief in support of the earlier suit. The province's Ministry of Natural Resources fears the arrival of Asian carp in the Great Lakes will wipe out commercial and recreational fisheries in Ontario. Throughout the Great Lakes the fishery is estimated to be worth $7 billion per year. In June, fishermen caught a metre-long carp about 10 kilometres from Lake Michigan. Environmental groups say the find leaves no doubt the fish have breached electronic barriers, built at a cost of $9 million, intended to keep them from reaching the Great Lakes. State officials say the discovery has made the situation more urgent. The suit also asks for an expedited study of permanently separating the Great Lakes and Mississippi River basins. The State of Illinois has argued that closing the canal, which was opened more than 100 years ago, will be damaging to the local economy. An industry coalition called Unlock Our Jobs is fighting to prevent the closure saying there's no guarantee it would prevent the fish from migrating further north. But letting the Asian carp loose in the Great Lakes would be even more damaging, say experts. The fish can grow to more than a metre in length and weigh up to 45 kilograms, and eat up to 40 per cent of their body weight each day. It was brought to North America to clean up algae at fish farms, but soon escaped into the wild. The voracious eaters take away food from other fish species. In some parts of the Mississippi, the Asian carp has obliterated native species. (With files from The Associated Press)

Have you ever tried to learn a new fishing tactic?

This year(since last fall actually)has been a bit of a bust for me and fishing. I don't have the energy to go out every night and work the two different bodies of water that I like fishing for bass. I love top water fishing (bass) and bottom bouncing(trout). Am also fairly good at float fishing with spinning gear. ( just don;t have the patience to learn my float reel that i bought two years ago ) This year, I bought a little 12 ft tinnie and am looking forward to fishing a river that is loaded with pike and bass in it. Ton's of trees and black mud bottom is the rule on this body of water. My plan is to use the top water frogs(with or without leader depending on target of bass or pike) and target the water under the tree banks and heavy grass stretches. BTW I get bored tossing spinners and crank baits. I use a spinning reel with a med-heavy two piece rod and 30lb power pro braided line for most of my bass fishing. I also have an identical reel and rod combo that is set up with 10lb mono and will tie on a leader for the pike if I chase them. I am thinking about taking a couple of weekends and just bringing jigs and plastic trailers to get some confidence in using them. I know I am missing lots of fish by not using them and as the water warms up, I want to fish the deeper waters in the locales that I target. So, my question to you all: 1)Have you ever tried to learn a new fishing tactic? 2) Why, what, and how did you succeed ? Thanks again, a frustrated splashopper -

Thank goodness for the internet. When I got to one of my favourite places to fish for bass, the wind was blowing a good 30-35k from the SW. Slight chop on the water and I am wondering how I am gonna keep the canoe in line for fishing the shores. Good thing I always have my Blackberry with me. Lol checked a couple of sites and not only found out how I was gonna control the canoe(tied a 2gallon pale to the tail to slow the drift) but I also saw a tip or two for fishing the windy conditions. Well, it paid off! I had the lake all to my self until 7pm tonite(started at 8:30 am). Got a dozen decent bass and one with an MNR tag in it too.It was a great day(pics tomorrow when I get home) out there "meditating with the fish about stuff and thins" lol. I am sleepin in the van tonite and gonna try to add some inches to our team(one) with some pike on a river that is known to have some monsters in it tomorrow mornin. I figured I may as well stay in the van as my university daughter and her friends are having a sleep over and I just don't need those visions in my head tonite. Lol. See ya all tomorrow and good luck out there. Splashhopper
