OFAH to host Walleye workshop The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH), along with Fisheries Management Zone (FMZ) 17 Advisory Council, which covers the Kawartha Lakes, Trent and Crowe River watersheds, and the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR), is hosting a free, public workshop on the state of Walleye in FMZ 17. It will take place Wednesday, October 24 from 5:30pm to 9:00pm at the OFAH|Mario Cortellucci Hunting and Fishing Heritage Centre in Peterborough. Speakers will discuss walleye assessment, management, enforcement, habitat needs and the impacts of invasive species. The workshop is part of the Walleye Management Strategy for Zone 17. Developed by the Advisory Council and the MNR, the strategy aims to increase public awareness around Walleye and Walleye management. "An up-to-date understanding of the state of our fisheries and what factors are affecting them is key to making informed decisions for both governments and stakeholders," said Chris Robinson, OFAH Atlantic Salmon Program Coordinator and Master of Ceremonies for the workshop. "We have a great evening of presentations lined up that everyone with an interest in Walleye management in FMZ 17 will want to hear." Seating is limited, so interested individuals are encouraged to register at [email protected]. For more information, including a schedule of presentations, visit www.ofah.org/fishing/fmz-17-walleye-workshop. For details on FMZ 17, visit the MNR's website at www.mnr.gov.on.ca/en/Business/LetsFish/2ColumnSubPage/264442.html.

A new state record was recently confirmed by the DNR! The new record comes courtesy of a Great Lakes muskellunge caught on Saturday, October 13 at 10:30 a.m. by Joseph Seeberger on Lake Bellaire in Antrim County. The fish weighed 58 pounds, measured 59 inches long and had a girth of 29 inches. Read more here.

Nice catch!!!

OK.. you think thats bad!! I caught this massive pike a few years back. Long story short, an abundance of "refreshments" led us to eat the mammoth thing at hunt camp for supper (it did feed 13 guys!!) AND despite its size the cold water made it delicious... at least I remember it that way. Anyway the next morning all that remains was the head of the beast. So I froze it and brought it home to someone who was supposedly great at head mounts. Lesson learned.. always see examples of work before dropping anything off... lol.. or just spend the dough on a replica...

I received this press release this morning and thought it would be a good thing to share.. especially the speed limit info!!! ================== ATV SAFETY AND THE LAW Enjoy the Ride - Safely (North Bay, ON) – The North Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) wants to remind everyone how to enjoy their ATV while doing so safely and legally. Each year the OPP are called to the scenes of needless ATV fatalities as well as serious life changing injury collisions. The Law The Off-Road Vehicles Act (ORVA) and the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) requires an operator to have their machine registered, plated, and insured. The registration and insurance documents must be produced on demand by a police officer. To ride off-road, you must be at least 12 years old unless under close adult supervision. To ride on roads, you must hold a valid G2/M2 licence or greater. Speed Limits – A maximum of 20 km/h on roads with a limit of 50 km/h; and a maximum of 50 km/h on roads with a limit of more than 50 km/h. Helmets must be worn at all times and on all classes of off-road vehicles. Safety Reminders Ride Sober – this may sound like a no-brainer, but every year there are people who feel the need to put their life and the life of others in serious jeopardy – don’t do it, and oh year – you will be arrested if you do! Be prepared – carry a cell phone, maps/GPS, flashlight, blankets, first aid kits, matching and a sounding device. Wear protective clothing and eye protection – shorts and sunglasses do not cut it. Conduct a pre-ride inspection before heading out. Check oil and gas levels, brakes, lights and winch. When travelling on the roads, ride on the shoulder in the same direction as traffic. Always ride within your ability and know your limitations. Consider taking a rider training course to become a skilled, confident rider. Enjoy your ride, hunting or ice fishing – just remember to be safe and ride sober, someone who loves you wants you home. For a detailed break down on the rules and regulations please click on the link below from the Ministry of Transportation. (MT0) http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/pubs/atv/off-on-road-riding.shtml
