  1. Make sure you keep all your purchase & transfer receipts including those for the taxes you paid. Myself and many others have paid all the taxes required only to have the province 2 years later demand we pay taxes owing. Without proof I paid the taxes I would have had to pay again. Rick
  2. Although i agree getting the card is a great idea (but not required) what "saves all of the guesswork and interpretation" are you referring to? The language is clear. If a marina is failing to provide a properly completed rental-boat safety checklist they are in violation of the law & could also be held liable if the operator violated any boating laws. The check sheets includes things such as proper operation of the boats systems, safety gear, local hazards and operating rules. The operator gets a copy and the marina keeps a copy. Usually it is part of the rental agreement. Last time I rented a boat 3 years ago on Lake Nipissing the camp owner properly filled out the checklist even when I didn't require it as proof of competency. It covers their butts. Rick
  3. This statement is not correct. * All operators, proof of competency required on board by September 15, 2009. Proof of competency can take 1 of 3 forms: * proof of having successfully completed a boating safety course in Canada prior to April 1, 1999 * a pleasure craft operator card issued following the successful completion of a Transport Canada accredited test; * a completed rental-boat safety checklist (for power-driven rental boats). These references taken from the Transport Canada website & Safe Boating Guide TP 511E (01/2009). Here's a link to Transport Canada's site re: Operators Card: http://www.tc.gc.ca/marinesafety/debs/obs/...operatorfaq.htm As for courses after 15 Sep., 2009 requiring re certifications it is not mentioned by Transport Canada. No one who has mentioned this has yet to provide any reference that I've seen. Laszlo: For rental boats you do not need a card. Rick
  4. 6"-8" is far from too large for lakers. Big fish don't get big by eating small snacks.
  5. What are you fishing for that 6"-8" baits will be too large?
  6. I have stayed at both Birch Hill & Cozy Camp & can recommend both. First time up there I was at Birch Hill but after that when I couldn't get into Birch Hill as they were booked up I tried Cozy Camp and have repeated my trips to them quite a few times. The 2 bdrm cottage on the point is my favorite if available. Rick BTW: It's Lake Nosbonsing.
  7. Try Food Basics. They have frozen ocean smelt in the 6"-8" in bags. Cheap bait. These are whole fish with heads and guts.
  8. For dead bait?
  9. Try along the north shore of the island that sits at the mouth of the bay. Watch out for the rocks. Rick
  10. When your original estimate of trailer weight was 1,200lbs, there was some of us that were supporting your trailering it with your Jetta if you kept your passenger & cargo weight down. With your newer updated weight, all are saying it's not a good idea. But by your above statement it appears you have already decided your good to go even if you are over your approved weight for at least up to 2 hrs. Good Luck
  11. You might get away with it on short local runs but no your over your safe legal limit. Forget about the math for calculating extra weight, your trailer is already now 130lbs over max before you consider extra personal weight or cargo, let alone poor road or ramp conditions. Rick
  12. Arbitrary generalizations mean nothing. Your math is still mixed up. Now your adding a 800lb cargo capacity & needing to subtract the weight of the hitch & tongue weight not mentioned by you before, or not mentioned in either of my owners manuals. Both my manuals mention 2 x 150lb people or max tow rating plus 300lbs with no subtractions for tongue weight or hitch(hard to tow without either) but subtractions for extra personal weight or cargo. As for most, if both GM & Ford don't make up most in Canada what does? As some vehicles may differ why don't we leave it at "check your owners manual & do the math as it recommends"? Rick
  13. Fisherman: I did the math based on your formula and it just didn't work out. Use the example of a max. towed rating of 1,500lbs. Allow one 150lb driver only. Assume no other passengers or cargo. Still allowed 1,500lbs. Next subtract tongue weight assuming proper tongue weight -150lbs. Only 1,350lbs left available. Under your formula you couldn't reach max tow rating ever unless the driver weighed nothing. When max tow rating is even higher the tongue weight alone would make it impossible even without a driver. I also urge anyone towing to check there owners manual and do the math them self. When even approaching the max consider this is based on normal roads, not off road or extremely hilly roads. Also ensure your vehicle is in top working order including steering & suspension, transmission, engine, tires and brakes. Rick
  14. Both my vehicle manuals disagree with your figures. One Ford and one GM. Max. towing capacity based on 2 on board (300lbs.) Tongue weight (10%-12% of trailer weight) is figured in and doesn't need to be added. Yes extra passengers and cargo must be subtracted. Also why I added "Best to check first though". Rick
  15. Where did you get car rated for 1,500lbs? Max towing capacity doesn't = total vehicle rated capacity. He should be able to tow the boat and normal gear and people and still remain within legal capacity. Best to check first though. Although legal it still doesn't mean it's a great set up. Rick
  16. Don't assume this covers you for liability when boating using OFAH Members Benefits. This quote was taken from your provided link. Click "for more information" link re: insurance. Quote:"This policy provides no coverage for automobiles, boats, motors, ATV's or snowmobiles. That form of liability insurance is typically provided through a home and/or auto insurance policy." Rick
  17. I fished it quite a few times. And yes there are lots of fish there. The sunken island is toward the eastern end. If the article you are referring to is the one in the June issue of Ontario Out Of Doors if you look at the map on page 46 the sunken island would be in the area north of the #4. Trolling the narrows or over the weed beds just north of the narrows on the east side of the narrows can be productive for walleye. Rick
  18. They were searching for the occupants of a stolen vehicle that was abandoned in the same area right before the tragic crash. Rick
  19. Seems about right for that set up. Yes slower to plane & possibly less top end. With the prop installed check your WOT rpm. I suspect it will be well below the recommended range. Check it with the boat loaded the way you typically use it. If it is below the recommended range loaded the way you typically use it you have too much prop. Either reduce the diameter or pitch(or both) to bring the WOT back within the recommended range. Rick
  20. Scum Frog for bass & pike around weeds and lily pads. Found the black with yellow skirt the most productive colour for me. Rick
  21. Last week I meet a guy who was scraping his boat & motor. Fiberglass boat was destroyed by raccoons. He said the motor ran good but the tilt/trim didn't work. He was told it was a $2,000 repair. Bottom line if I removed it I could have it for a case of beer. I figure I can run it without the tilt/trim if it cannot be fixed cheaper. It's a 1985 Merc. 90 hp. I should have a repair manual by Thurs/Fri. than I'll start working on it. It does turn over good and is exceptionally clean inside & out. Appears to be well maintained. If it's not worth fixing up at least I'll have many good parts for sale. I also bought a unused rebuilt prop from him for $50 which was in a sealed bag with a receipt for just over $100. Rick
  22. Although I would clarify this with the MNR but the way I read it the term "resident" refers to residents of Canada."Angler" would refer to those entitled to fish in Ontario with or without a licence as per the regulations. The Recreational Fishing Regulations Summary defines two types of residents. Ontario and Canadian. This quote doesn't refer to which type of resident it refers to but the Summary does state what a non resident is. Fishing Ontario 2008-2009 Recreational Fishing Regulations Summary pg. 6: "Anyone who is not an Ontario or Canadian resident (see definitions, page 5) is considered a non-resident for the purposes of fishing licence regulations." (Page 5 defines what is required to be considered a Ontario or Canadian resident.) So my take on it is if you do not fit the definition of a non-resident you must be a resident. Rick
  23. Yeah within about a 100 square miles. Without my full name and other resources you would have some work ahead of you to actually find out where I live. One member here has been to my house though. Rick
  24. Honestly I believe using your real name is only opening you up to possible problems. If you had a disagreement on the forum with a less than upright individual with your real name & by reviewing your profile or past posts it would be easy to determine where you live. This is more info than I am comfortable giving out to those I never meet. Over the last few years I have had the pleasure to meet with more than a few members here and everyone one of those have been given my real name if requested. I do not hide my first name as I often sign off with it. And I have not even touched on the possible consequences that organizations such as P3TA may do with this information as I believe they and other such groups monitor many of these types of forums. Best Wishes: Rick
  25. doubleheader: As someone who had served in the Canadian Forces for 13 years I can only agree with you. We have had some who joined only later find out that it wasn't a choice they were happy with. These few, some with very poor attitudes were a pain in the butt to serve with until they finished their basic engagement. To force youth to go into the forces after school would only degrade the quality of our forces and drain much needed money from the forces. The function of the nco's would become one of babysitter / enforcer instead of leader. The size of our forces would greatly increase taking up much needed money for improved equipment. As it sits now there is for more qualified applicants than there is positions available. Rick
