I never remove my trebles and replace with siwash, especially for brook trout. I usually remove the stock hooks and add Owners (a bit bigger then the original). Pinch the barbs down and you're golden. You definitely want to bring body baits up there.
Yeah you need to be real close for spring browns, 20ft of water is way too much. If you aren't hitting bottom with the lures off the boards once in a while, move closer
Make sure the season is open before you start fishing You'll get fresh fish, drop backs and ones that are hanging out in the estuary water. They'll be all over the place.
I wouldn't listen to the locals, lol. Depends on water temp, but that for north they could either be right on top or spread out everywhere like they usually are right after ice out.
