Any deals on Marine/Deep cycle batteries? Should I go Gel?
AKRISONER replied to Hack_Fisherman's topic in General Discussion
as mentioned above, my old man leaves his batteries on the noco genius all winter in the garage as well. No issues to report. Directly from their website: Maintenance Plus. A powerful battery maintenance charge that actively monitors and manages charge cycles, but also provides a finishing charge every 24-hours, keeping batteries fully charged with zero overcharge. My understanding is that yes it does: Interactive. Dynamically alters the charging process based on organic battery feedback allowing for precision battery charging. You will note that when you run the charger, typically your starting battery will finish charging first, especially if you only head out for an hour or so. It treats each battery as its own bank entirely and charges it accordingly. Most impressively my Starting battery last year was getting tired and after coming out of winter storage I was experiencing a voltage drop when cranking the engine that was causing my electronics to shut off. I figured my battery was toast but I was down in south carolina camping and fishing so I figured I could live with the electronics blipping for the time being and get a battery when i got home...well a few cycles on the noco and the problem entirely went away. The reconditioning and desulfating process that they claim about actually works...pretty crazy. The batteries lasted me the entirety of last year and that included fishing tournaments running livewells and graphs all day and the voltage drop problem was gone! -
This ain't Kansas Dorothy but that's a Tornado
AKRISONER replied to Old Ironmaker's topic in Non-Outdoors Open Discussion
see thats so strange that you got no warning. Tornado warning systems are far as I am aware are linked into the national emergency system. I.e. your phone will go off like an amber alert if you enter into a tornado warned region. Ive yet to have it happen up here in Canada, but have had it happen 2 out of the 4 times ive been down in Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina in the spring (tornado season) I think one may have been a flash flood warning, but Guntersville was darn right scary. I didnt see any tornados but an outbreak happened and areas to both the north and south along the front line had damaging tornados. Its possible Iron that what you saw was so quickly developing that the weather service looking at their radar were not able to see it in time to give warning. They did however warn as early as Tuesday evening that Tornado's were strongly possible on Wednesday afternoon/evening as the front approached. Weathermen get a lot of critique but its pretty impressive IMO that they were able to warn of the tornados over 24 hours in advance simply by looking at the energy of the system and the potential for wind shear. Glad to hear you guys are safe! If you want to read an insane story read about the Joplin tornado. I think that tornado alone forced the government to invest even more into warning systems. -
without a doubt a buzzbait would be deadly for early spring pike. Theres usually a time in the spring that happens every year where the big pike are cruising shallow and slow rolled surface baits gets them fired up. We had such strange weather here this year that the bite went from being so cold that I couldnt get anything going because the fish were still wintering, to the water being so hot that the fish just moved the heck out. I honestly didnt get a consistent bite going until last weekend for the first time this year! Even then the biggest fish had already seemed to have moved off into their summer patterns for the most part. What a strange strange year...I have absolutely no clue what the smallmouth are going to be doing on opener. I imagine its going to be July off edge stuff this year vs the typical super shallow really funny top water stuff that ive grown accustomed to on opener. I imagine the mid day shallow sand flats bite will be gone by the time opener hits in zone 14. A shame because last year it was a riot throwing chatterbaits across 4 foot sand bays and just hammering huge smallmouth and even more strange big 5+lb walleye as well. How is that for a pattern though? Walleye in <5fow on at noon on bluebird sunny days on chatterbaits!

as a rule of thumb I wouldnt stray from Minkotta, Marinco, Pro Mariner or Noco if you are looking for a new charger. Noco's are readily available on Amazon at competitive pricing. I love mine, its very low profile and fully sealed/waterproof. They also have the function to recondition batteries. They also specifically are designed to charge both flooded and gel and AGM batteries if you have them. Apparently each battery type has a "most effecient" way of charge cycle and the genius knows how to do it. -
i cant count the number of times Pike have tboned small smallmouth and walleye on me lol. One time while jiggin walleye my buddy hooked into a perch and purposely fought it for a long time just to see if a pike would hit it and then it actually happened. The funniest bit was the timing...the MNR literally pulled up on him as it happened ahhaha. There was no problem but it was hilarious because you cant legally use perch as bait.

Looking for a used fishing boat and some advice
AKRISONER replied to FishFinder17's topic in General Discussion
boat looks to be in fantastic shape! very very nice. congrats again! Welcome to the world of taking care of a 20+ year old boat. There is basically always something to fix lol but honestly i sometimes enjoy it almost as much as the fishing itself...almost...Im a bit tired of it now though, bass season needs to just start lol -
I have definitely gutted a few pike absolutely chocked full of small perch! They probably go down a lot easier than a big wide bluegill though!

Canadian tire specifically changed their nautilus line of AGM battery supplier last year to address this issue. The price of their batteries increased in accordance with this change. Prior to last year Exide was their supplier and was known to make poor batteries. I am not certain who makes their flooded lead acid batteries anymore as exide appears to have gone under. FYI Costco is now also now selling an "energizer" branded AGM made my Johnson controls thats really really cheap. Warranty is not as good though. Also, If you have having issues with that new of batteries its very very likely that you may have issues with your battery charger. My last set of batteries lasted 11 years 3 of them at the end of their life had me fishing them over 300+ hours a year. The key is to always charge the boat immediately when you get back and if they are flooded batteries, watch your water levels and ensure you maintain them by charging them every month or so through the winter while they are in storage. FYI AGM's are more conducive to deep discharges. So if you spend long days on the water an AGM is the way to go vs flooded. -

I owned the house at the corner of dufferin and Rowan avenue for 7 years across from fairbank Park. I wouldn’t call the neighborhood a slum, it’s actually on the up and up, but definitely went through a really rough stretch in the 90’s. the area towards eglington and dufferin and st clair clair and dufferin has seen a major change in recent years however. I think a lot of the parkdale king and dufferin crowd moved north and parkdale gentrified. There is also now a methadone clinic at the Southwest corner of st clair and dufferin which brings a lot of characters around. the Eglinton problems have somewhat subsided with the cross town construction. The place is a giant disaster so the riff raff have found new haunches to frequent. Fairbank Park itself was great, the police took it upon themselves to keep that park and school safe. When I lived there there was almost a cop conducting “traffic” duty 100% of the time parked in front of the pool. They’d ticket people for illegally turning left off dufferin onto key west. What they truthfully were doing was keeping the dealers and fiends away from the school and park. living in fairbank was great. It was an oasis between two pretty rough spots. I never had any issues at my actual house. The worst was an unlocked bike stolen from my back yard. Nothing more than that. I miss that house a lot sometimes! -

my time spent reading and researching is your gain. the last posts explain my conclusion and reasoning. Specifically that canadian tire is now selling the best quality battery on the market while offering the lowest possible price for batteries with the same specifications. They also offer the best warranty in the entire market. their batteries regularly go on sale further reducing the cost of their batteries. -
Never ever undervalue a huge net when fishing for giants. When i caught this one I had the big musky net in the boat. She easily swam in and calmed down entirely. She began recovering as soon as she was in the net. I lifted her head barely out of the water and got the hook out. and let her just hang out while i got my camera etc in order. The whole time she sat calmly breathing totally submerged in the lake. The right net is not only better for you trying to land big fish, it is also beneficial to these big fish, and even more so musky which are susceptible to over stressing, especially in warm weather. I was lucky to be fishing with a musky master FisherPete when i first went for musky, that 46 was hooked on a cowgirl deep. Pete proceeded to do the taxing process of lifting the muskys head and cutting each hook on the trebles 1 at a time while allowing her to catch her breath between each move. The process took half an hour, but a fish that I was sure was a goner recovered after half an hour and swam away strong.

Oh man it makes me want to cry thinking about it. When I hooked the pike no word of a lie it started swimming away and it was like a lake trout, it ran and ran to the point that I was almost spooled. It didn’t even slow down or aknowledge my existence. It just swam at will. It had hundreds of feet of line out before it finally turned. I was fighting it for over 5 minutes. My buddy had time to finish taking a crap up at the house. come outside, come back down to the lake, have a smoke with the snowmobile running and me screaming at him without him hearing me over the running snowmobile. Finish his smoke and then realize something was up lmao. We got it up to the hole and it was an 8 inch hole and the fish was wider than the hole. It made another run and then we got it back up. We couldnt get its head lifted so we tried to go for a grab by sticking out hand down the hole and it made a move and it was gone. Without a doubt it was 20+lbs maybe even bigger. It was super fat and had a bigger head than my PB 46 inch musky. When the line broke I ran out of the hut threw my rod as far as I possibly good and screamed hahaha

Happens every year, the spawn does a number on panfish. Why the die off is so noticeable on those lakes is because the size of the panfish is substantial while the number of predators that eat them is low. The population and size of panfish in the tri lakes is absurd. There’s not many lakes with such an insane average size almost anywhere. You don’t see it as much in lakes with pike because they clean most of those up for you. I’ve always said that it’s a shame that the bass genetics in those lakes doesn’t allow for too many sunfish/bluegill eaters to exist. The biomass is there but the bass just aren’t big enough to be constantly chomping on those 8 inch dinner plate sunfish. it’s actually always shocked me that the musky don’t get even bigger chomping on them but I’m pretty certain 1. Sunfish aren’t as fatty as whitefish etc. and 2. I think they might be hard for muskys to hunt because they are fast and agile.

not me but my best buddies were catching them easy in the tri lakes. That heat wave after the snow really really screwed everything up everywhere it seems. Had the fishing tough across the province from what I can tell. Things are shaping up nicely now though and im seeing more catches.

It takes time indeed, the biggest pain by far is getting the images sized and cropped, but it’s easier than editing video Like you do weekly lol that’s for sure! Gives me something Fishing related to do while I am down in the GTA with work being slow! thanks for reading!

weird...this is literally the exact way my mom has always cooked our walleye as well. Some kind of folklore recipe I guess. manitou I also have been experimenting with different ways to make fish. Tacos are one of my favourite foods so I keep falling back to that one every time lol. Salt your batter however you do it. Don’t overlook a nice vinegar with mayo based slaw, chopped jalepeno, chipotle mayo, cilantro and a squeeze of lime.

I couldn’t imagine what would happen to those panfish in that lake if more than just musky started eating them. The tri lakes are my second favourite fishery in Ontario because they are big but just entirely different than any other lakes around Ontario. I hope they never change much aside from the fish getting bigger and more plentiful.

ugh, the vaughan store is basically always empty so I am not surprised, but also sucks because now the store that is on route to my way up north is going to be closing. I guess it will be Cabellas that I have to visit going forward. -

I would also like to point out here that Sail doesnt push an absolute garbage line of Chinese designed/manufactured crap like Bass Pro does. When i first started shopping at bass pro 15ish years ago they had a mixture of their BP private label and then normal brands. As time has moved on they have basically just completely moved away from selling anything but BP branded crap. The stuff is exactly that...crap nock off junk. most noticeable is their terminal tackle selection...you can barely buy anthing except for their junky BP brand stuff now. My best experience was wanting some tungsten drop shot weights and of course the only brand they stocked was their own. I took them out on the lake made one cast and literally every single one of them the swivels immediately failed and broke resulting in me losing the entire package worth of weights. When i went to get a refund with i think 1 weight left in the package the guy tried to question why I wasnt returning the weights with the packaging and I told him that they shouldn't expect their customers to go and pick up their faulty product that naturally ended up on the bottom of a lake. The best shop in the GTA right now is Pro J. I find the guy at Gangons to be unhelpful and somewhat rude as if they are only intersted in helping out the guys that they know. Thats just my experience...they have a decent selection of stuff and their pricing is solid, but I personally prefer to shop at Pro J. Phoebe at Pro J (spelling) is the man, knows his stuff and is always willing to help you find or even order in anything that you need. Their pricing is literally as low as you will find anywhere. -
I take a ton of pride in it and for 22 years old shes holding up very nicely. Couple things are a little worn, specifically the compartment latches are becoming a little troublesome in the rear and the holes that had the screws in them are a little stripped out. Could make for a nice winter project but I dont have a heated garage to work in! At some point the carpet should be done, its starting to lift a little in spots but its nothing that a bit of a glue doesnt fix. I think about overhauling some of this stuff but then i worry about the 22 year motor, because if she pops, I dont imagine I will re-power. All I can hope is that is that she lasts 4 more years. Because once its totally paid off then it literally doesnt owe me a single thing. Im pretty certain i can keep it going for that long pretty easily. The old Yamaha 2 strokes are simple engines that are easy to work on for the most part that dont have too much fancy crap to break. Plus they arent lean on the oil consumption so that keeps the motor nice and protected. Yes indeed, We arent in sturgeon bay but we are to the east of bigwood island. Do you recognize our boathouse? I am fairly certain that it is somewhat of a landmark to the locals in the area as there arent too many oldschool cribbed boathouses anymore.
