Trout / Salmon Report & POACHERS CAUGHT ON FILM
Zamboni replied to ranger520vx's topic in General Discussion
Great work with the pics, mnr can certainly make a case against these characters. When first confronted/contacted they will probably further implicate themselves-especially if shown the pictures. -
Schools and schools of 10" perch on south side of Georgina right now if you launch from Sibbald....didn't find the jumbo's yesterday. Still warm so its later this year....we caught 2 lb smallies at shoals but didn't find football sized giants I see posted. Curious how many people will be swimming at the PP this weekend.

Need advice. Should I buy an outboard or I/O ??????
Zamboni replied to kennyman's topic in General Discussion
I'd have to agree on 16' alum being the most versatile, combined with a 40hp it sounds like good fit. Buy the newest, best maintained engine you can with least hours on it. At very least a good test drive and comp test is necessary buying a used engine-I'm amazed how many guys are content to just see a new purchase start on muffs in driveway. Lot of entry level 16' IO boats available with 3.0 engines in good condition-many with 4.3 also. Again a thorough inspection is recomended but lots of these boats don't see the hours of a fishing machine-plenty of families use them July-August in our climate. Can't stress enough inspecting your potential purchase-when you decide to buy pay a marine mechanic to look boat over....money well spent. -
PM'd you some links Grog-Poine au baril is in there somewhere. Exchanged cottages with a family bit north of where your going-its really nice country.

People throwing everything caught into a bucket need to be checked more often by MNR. That's my concern, are slot limits being followed on eyes-are tiny muskie being kept? Anybody, regardless of race/origin fishing for the meat not sport needs to be watched closely.

Saw guy back straight in on right bay of 2 car garage, trailer wheels butted up against board screwed to garage floor. He then blocked out left trailer wheel and placed a board about a 6 " forward and inside of R trailer wheel. Lowered the wheel at tongue of trailer-unhooked from hitch and trailer boat/swiveled to left with a seemingly effortless pull. Trailer hitch was about 1 foot out garage door, when he moved it left to centre of garage it was few inches inside. Seems safer than angling boat into garage with vehicle-may be dificult if your garage has steep incline or if your set-up is "tongue heavy" Its suprising how much you gain by pivoting the tongue to centre of garage-try it with tape measure. Key is your left wheel must be blocked well-he had a rubber chock.

You guys have sold me on Shimano Conv rod-been using an 8' HD saltwater surf casting rod and my shoulder is killing me.....couldn't raise my right arm in shower to shampoo my hair

Late season an outboard 2 stroke is much easier-once there is a chance of freezing the basic 4 stroke inboard must be winterized. As for easier to care for-its hard to do a tune up or necessary oil change on many IO's-especially first time. Same for winterizing, its not extremely dificult but more involved than with a 2 stroke outboard. I think basic fish/ski I/O entry level boat is your best bet-just wanted to clear up the late season freeze danger. Larger boat the older it'll be for same dollars-its a trade-off in that area you really need to weigh pros & cons of. I had a small sideline business working on marine engines (until neighbours/city/gov't showed me the errors of my ways) and have seen many POS engines on recently purchased used boats-money/time spent inspecting PRE-purchase is wisely invested.

Far from being an expert myself but in my limited experience I've found the first salmon to run up tribs feed more-much more chance for a hit. Salmon that have gone darker colour and fish entering tribs here in east in second 1/2 of Sept and in Oct rarely bite. There's exceptions but many hooked in mouth are flossed. Can you reach deeper water at river mouth, some being caught on piers right now-fish 'staging' a little deeper are more active feeding. I went 0/4 early morn at last deep spot where salmon are staging on an eastern trib-in boat but heard guys on pier had few hits on cleos overnight with 2 caught.

There are many deals on 'entry level' fiberglass boats around 16.5 because there are so many in market. Its first boat for a lot of people, then they get 2 footitis and want a bigger boat. Lots want more power for watersports-16.5 with 3 litre seems underpowered in a year for that purpose-even 4.3 gets outgrown by 'go-fast' crowd. IMO you'll find best value for your dollars in 16.5 Glastrom/Bayliner etc about 3-4 years old. New about 16-18k, really check out engine and you should have no problems. Might not be the traditional fishing machine but if your on the water in a safe reliable boat that's what matters. I'm running a jet boat with 190hp Sportjet....were always fishing. The boat actually rekindled my interest in fishing-its not perfect for fishing but it gets us on the water. Lake O when weather allows, Kawarthas on weekend....many weeknights to Scugog-boat in garage is great.
-
65* on Stony Sunday morn-with warm weather forecast temp will be moving back up. Shallow Scugog heats up fastest with few warm days.

That brown is a monstor-must have been a great fight.

Where do those 'rogue waves' come from?....heard a few people say wakes from large lakers can create them but I never noticed that when big ocean going ship passes unless close? Just came back from launch-huge rollers out there...winds 43km with 55 gusts. Scary-too much for my 16.6' boat.

Glad I was wrong-both providers have the stream clear of map calls so seem poised to move to a higher rev....could be any day now.
-
My prediction: Sat providers took out map calls over past 2 weeks....tonight the cards go to a new revision and FTA/testers miss the match.
-
Only have the cumbersome jackets myself....gotten lazy about not putting it on when moving. I'm going to at least get back to wearing it under power and when theres bit of 'chop'.

There is a cottage rental with boat rentals on East side of Nogies Creek Bay on Pigeon Lake-I visited friends staying there that really enjoyed the place. Can't recall name, search here or hopefully another member will chime in. Great location, good muskie fishing and eyes at dusk near island at Nogies. When kids are back to school the camp itself would be quieter-lots of cottages = lots of kids in summer there. Would be a long trip for a 9.9 rental but Bobcaygeon is great. My wife has had enough fishing after few hours, I drop her to shop at Bobcaygeon and then meet her for late dinner when were on Pigeon-just tie up and walk into town. For fishing Nogies Bay 9.9 is ok but there's lots of great boating on Pigeon if you rent/borrow a larger boat. PM me for charts if you go.

Well, my daughters only 7-what really impresses her is when I adjust the nozzle on the jet pump to fire a rooster tail....I think you should choose boats to 'buzz' carefully.
-
You could get basic bell sub-tell installer your thinking of adding a second receiver in basement/kids room so wire it now. Get a cheap FTA receiver, $150....install on the 2nd line and watch $150 of porn in first week so systems paid for

It's a good point Roy, they may have a right to be out there but endangering their kids when they know there will be large cruiser traffic is nuts. Hard to stay away from the big boats though, Scugog is barely more than a swamp and every year there's more big boats. All the Kawartha lakes have large transient cruisers being on the Trent system, and plenty of large boats resident to the lakes. I'm adding a second bilge pump inline where floor drains in passenger area of my boat, right now it exits by a scupper valve. Its mod the jet boat sites recomend as they do "submarine moves"....little added safety when these morons get too close.

http://www.ofncommunity.com/forums/index.p...mp;hl=submerged Good info in that thread Mike-the iboats link I posted is worth reading. You need to get started asap. 2 stroke or 4?

Facts added to the story, boat pulling the tube ran it into a stationary boat. Sad.... --------------------------------------------------------------------- Two children have been injured, one critically, in a boating accident on Rice Lake near Harwood. The towed inner tube on which they were riding slammed into a stationary boat. Around 3 p.m., one family group was preparing for an afternoon of tubing off Coral Cables Resort. Stationed offshore, the family group saw a second boat towing two children on a water tube approaching. At the last moment, the approaching second boat swerved to avoid collision, but the two children being towed on a water tube, a nine-year-old boy and 10-year-old girl, slammed into the stationary boat. The two children were taken to Northumberland Hills Hospital in Cobourg with serious head injuries. The nin-year-old boy was airlifted to Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto with critical injuries

There is a fastner called a Nutsert-there's other brand names. Basically you drill a hole, then insert the nutsert into the 'blind' hole on the nose peice of a tool that looks like pop rivet gun. Squeeze the tools handles and the nutsert 'mushrooms' on both sides of the hole....leaves you a threaded nut iside the aluminum bench in this case. Great for marine aps, on a peice of sheet metal a grade 5 fastner breaks before the nusert turns loose. I'm in Whitby-long drive from Hamilton but your welcome to borrow mine-think I have some wide flange nutserts for aluminum also. Here's a link: http://www.valleyhardware.ca/technical/nutsert_tech1.html I'm a 'tool guy'....love when a job means I need a new tool.

A few of us were discussing that problem at a BBQ-one guy had 2 cottage neighbours that purchased first boats in 30' size. Sales guys upsold both, "need that size for big water, they would be trading in within 2 years/unhappy with 20 footer". That makes sense-but these guys are now learning boating in 30' boats....never having owned a smaller boat they have no idea how their 30' boats affect smaller craft.

See if your library has The Twelve Volt Bible For Boats...great read, answer all your questions and more. Its about $15 from Amazon-twice that at marinas.
