New fishing regs 2008 Cautionary note for Zone 11
Fang replied to irishfield's topic in General Discussion
Ya I hear ya Wayne. Every couple of years I would spend news year on Lake Temagami and make a few trips into the backs lakes on Jan 1 (if able) for lakers. Looks like they closed up all lakes to match Lake Temagami LT season now. Heck of a shock to the lodges that opened for Jan1 season. They lose 6 weeks business for lake trout. I realize Whitefish and walleye are still open but lakers are where the coin is. -
weed gaurds like the one on the flies posted are usually tied with 20lb or heavier mono. I tie mine with Flouro just for an added touch. Take a 4-6 inch length of heavy mono and tie it on the body as if you wanted to make it a long tailwith it. Then tie the fly as per normal and finish up to the head. Before cutting the thread bring the tag end of the mono (sticking out as the long tasil piece) up to the eye of the hook and secure with a few more wraps of thread. Cut thread and expoxy the head wrappings I usually wrap the mono weed gaurd further down the bend in the hook so the line gets pointed in the right direction to follow the hook.

Downriggers Im gonna buy a set what are good models
Fang replied to 2 tone z71's topic in General Discussion
Cannons get my vote too. I've used Big Jons and Scottys a number of times on friends boats. I bought 2 Mag 10's in 1989 and they are still working great. There are faster and cheaper ones out there but if I ever have to buy another, I'll spend my money on Cannons IMO spend the money and get electric -
cruel report I spent all day xmas shopping. Very nice crappie

Spent a few minutes at Bronte Outdoors today looking at various reels. Really impressed with build and smoothness on the Scheffield. CDN $ seem to be around $259. Just found several US sites selling for $175. Filled out an on-line order all the way through to the pay part to find out shipping. $12-15 USD to ship from the US $70 cheaper to buy on line regardless of duty.

Bronte Outdoors has 6 or so different models. From the pictures I think they carry the Okuma Aventa as well as some Raven models. The Bob James looks familiar too. I think they had one with those spokes in the spool. Sorry didn't take note of prices. I've been interested in a float reel too and have watched several Aventa VT-1002's go on Ebay over the last few weeks for just under $100. Thought that a decent price with shipping in around $20 I'll add another question for the float guys I fish with a 12' and 10.5' steelhead rod and prefer some of the smaller streams. Lines have solid cork handles and I tape my spinning reels on. Any reason the float reel wouldn't work on a 12 or even a 10.5.

my first boat at middle stage I ran the aluminum tubing from under the middle seat lip. I had 1/2" or more to help anchor it in. Took advantage and put a livewell in the middle seat. After running four tubes up to the front seat, I put a cross bar mid way and bolted all the tubing together. From the cross bar down to the floor of the boat I put in a brace with a big rubber foot and bolted that to the cross piece. Big advantage for me was having the seat in the nose almost at the perfect height. I only had to put a small shim under the tubing. To cut the deck out of plywood I plumbed the center of the boat from the seat to the nose and temporarily fastened in a 1x2 peice of strapping. Marked the strapping every inch and took the right angle measurements to the side of the boat all the way to the nose. When cutting the outside edge of the deck I also adjusted the blade angle on the jig saw to closely match the angle of the hull. Remember it being a real good fit - so much that I needed to shave it becasue I didn't account for the carpet thickness

Can we book a little color to the river this year. I'll try and make it and will confirm later. Boat needs some work and starting battery is not 100%. Don't want to get caught up there without that!!!!

I've done a couple of platforms on similar aluminum boats. I'd suggest making a front support in the nose of the boat the same height as the seat frame. Use 1.5" tube aluminum lengths from the seat to the nose to build the platform base. Top with carpetted green plywood. Depending on the span from the seat to the nose you might need a mid rib to keep the flex down. You can do this either by dropping a wooden frame off the aluminum to the bottom of the boat or by getting a cross bar under all the tubes and then support from dead center in the nose of the boat. I'd do the main deck 6" or more below the top of the gunnel and then put in an extra step platform in the nose. Make this one big enough to accomodate an electric motor as well as a standing area to cast from if you need some extra height. I learned from the first boat and made storage hatches into the main seat frame. You can always shove styrofom up under the deck if you want flotation.

Have a day off planned tomorrow and pending weather plan to give the perch in barrie a shot. Other than the 400 bait shop would there be any other spots on the way with minnows for sale. Hate not have a back up plan.

I used to buy the tintex fabric dye ( grocery fabric store) and make up a super saturated solution. I think 1 box in 1 liter of water (don't quote me though its been too long). Boil the water and put the tails/skin in while hot. Let sit for a couple days but check it a few times to see colour intensity. I had pretty good luck on mid tones like greens and browns. You had to let the dye sit a while longer to get good black and reds. Never had too much luck on the lighter colours or flourescents. When I sold all my fly stuff last summer, the deer hide and bucktails I did 5-6 years ago still had good colour.

Got into work this morning and a collegue was waiting for me at my desk with a big grin. He produces a page torn out of a magazine and shoves a pen at me for an autograph. He could barely keep a straight face. While flipping through a recent MacLeans magazine at the dentists office, he sees this ad for OFAH Anglers Awards and recognizes the angler as a co-worker. He tore the page out while the receptionist was in the back and brought it in for me. I did notice a couple things though, they photo-shopped out the OFC logos on the black towel and changed my orange Bass Pro Shops hat to a Cabelas. If anyone out there has back issues with this add, I'd love to get my hands on a clean page. My friend folded it up and stuck it in his pocket.

Be very aware of wind overnight. If you've ever been down at picton with a strong East wind you'll know that even at the town docks they can get 2-3 footers and when they get squeezed in the end of the bay they come in very fast. I camped out that way for 15 years and have seen a number of boats damaged with overnight winds. Calm or low winds are ok, but remember to dock the boat nose into the waves If any sign of a windy night, I'd pull the boat and leave the motor trimmed all the way down so water drains out

UB stop the algea discs for a while (or all together in my opinion) Plecos aren't really algea eaters although they get classed in the fish stores in with that type of fish. I had very good success feeding mine sliced zucchuni. Put a slice in a large paper clip to make it sink. remove it when fish do not focus on it, feed again in 2 days. Once the tank gets up and running (1-2 weeks) the normal algea build up and any excess food will be enough to maintain the plecos between feeding periods http://www.planetcatfish.com/shanesworld/s...?article_id=294

You are OK if you keep your lure or bait north of the Rebecca street bridge (thats upstrem form the north side of the bridge). Was down this week for a walk and river was almost flushed out and clear again.

The surprise fish looks like a Brown to me. Lots of spots and darker color for a rainbow. If so he or she is doing just what the salmon are doing, going to spawn.

You defintiely have a traditional fall pattern for Crappie. get the GPS out and make it a waypoint. Hit that spot in the winter through the ice

Anything above 150 will be fine. I shoot 7mm mag and have both 150 and 170. If you're gun is sighted in and set up on the 180 then stick with it. A 220 grain will drop significantly out past 200 yrds over the 180.

I've fished Curados just because my buddy bought them. I now own 5 BPS Extremes and for 1/2 the price of the Curado I do not find that much difference. The Curado has a more solid feel in the hand but I pitch, flip and cast just as well with the BPS even with the lighter jigs and tubes
