  1. Around most of the major tribs you can catch silvers (smaller salmon) in the spring casting spoons and body baits. I've been poking around Bronte as it's only 10 minutes from home and there's a few guys down there but not much catching right now. Last year I got into a coupe nice 4-5 lb chinook and 1 coho casting off the breakwall We used to hook into the odd laker up on the flats on the credit in the spring but never seen a salmon past the rivermouth area
  2. Not by my read of the regs. Scugog reopens next saturday with the rest of the kawarthas. Last year ministry were parked at Port Perry launch waiting for fishermen through April
  3. My wife keeps telling me i behave like a 12 year old does that count
  4. Direct from a recent article from Doug Stange (Infishermen) his best Northern Canadian Pike lure is a 4/0 or 5/0 willow leaf blade on a safety spin rig attached to a 4/0 - 1/4 ounce jig head. They get the safety spin and willow leaf blade rig from the storm wild eye series - keep the spinner rig and toss the storm bait. On the 1/4 oz jig head they run a saltwater Berkley swim bait called a Pogy. I'm headed to Big Sand Lake in Manitoba in June and will make sure that I have a good number of these handy.
  5. Open from Hwy 2 to the lake all year but after May 1st you can only fish from the boat launch to the lake. No fishing signs are posted through the marina portion. This is a city bylaw enforced by the little white clown cars. I'm still looking for 100% clarification on the Hwy 2 north to rebacca street bridge In new regs the sanctuary reference is gone but last time I checked the signs where still posted above Hwy 2. I will check again soon.
  6. Yes - He would have to have the proper license to legally fish out of posted Ontario seasons. Fishing/Hunting clubs sometimes do this with trout ponds on their property and same license applies to public fish ponds like the one in Shannonville I grew up with an uncle that had a private trout pond and we could only fish by the regular seasosns as the pond was checked regularly by local MNR guys. The MNR would even phone my uncle when they found other anglers trespassing or fishing out of season.
  7. OK I have a 2001 1750 Crestliner with a custom cover from previous owner. It's made from heavy canvas and has never been very water repellant. In the driveway I always have to put a blue poly tarp over top to keep insides dry. I want to stop the double tarp and will be trying a bit of McGiver next week. Gonna buy a couple gallons of Canadian Tire Canvas Tent Waterproof and a big garbage can. Gonna soak the old cover and see if it works once dry. At the same time I'm doing some web surfing on a custom cover and would appreciate any experiences with online sites and especially any specific type of custom tarps. Anyone pick up one of the BPS Semi-custom tarps like the Attwood 600 or similar OK to pm me

  9. Just for calling Wilmot creek - the "willy" you should be banned from all steelhead rivers. Probably calls em chromers too! There is only 1 secret steelhead river in Ontario and I plan to be there on opener and count me as a big vote for limiting access to rivers at this time of year. I totally agree with you Wayne. I don't understand why we protect every other fish during spawn except steelhead.
  10. Actually dropped in to the old temagami office and when they closed it a number of years ago picked up a copy at Gravenhurst.
  11. Might have better luck trying to get info on back lakes. We used to get the stocking reports for that region from the MNR office but that was a few years ago.
  12. Most now all have the boat size rating on them If you buy 2 don't down size I run one off the back and then off the nose so you get a wide open side drift and socks don't get in the way of landing fish. It's nice to have 2 out in real heavy winds
  13. L2F hit it on lures. Early the boards are best presentation. I also run a fair number of #2 evil eyes and taped up sutton 44's. Cleos are also a good board spoon but only if you're out in 40+ FOW. Never had luck in tight. If you can get your hands on some perch and gold colors minnow baits, their deadly in shallow. As mentioned the shallow bite never really hit last year and I spent most of my time from 80-230 straight out from Port Weller. Many a day the Frog or spook colored flasher was the ticket. Lakers will tend to be bottom oriented so be prepared to troll on bottom in 100+ FOW. Don't be scared to run a small gang troll either
  14. You can launch at 2 diffierent spots Queenston boat ramp and travel down river right to the "niagara bar" or at Port Dalhousie or Weller. Both ramps are a little west of the bar but for spring fishing this is the big trolling area fro lakers and chinooks Check out spoonpullers site for more details. Also google niagra river fishing for some additiona maps and river info Lots of new regs about US border waters and crossing with a boat. I lost track after several mile long posts and have rezolved just to fish CDN waters now. Best to have a good gps mapping system if you plan on drifting the bar just to ensure you don't accidentally get into US waters. Many first timers get caught up in the action and get mixed up. Niagara bar is really good with the right wind - anything from the south. Otherwise it can get very rough with outflow from river hitting the current break
  15. Some of the higher priced hobby paints come in glow and the dark and are well worth it. The biggest problem is UV burnout so keep your GITD's out of sunlight (UV) - better stored in a light barrier tackle box. I have cleos 4-5 years old that shine like they just came out of the pack. I have 2 other ways for adding glow in the dark to lures At the dollar stores (what would us fishermen do without dollarama) look for the glow stick display and find the glow in the dark earrings. Comes with 2 cheapy earrings and 2 small cyalume sticks like the ones for rod tips or floats. Theres a spring holder on the earring that can be removed and added easily over a split ring. Pop this on the split ring above the treble and crack the light stick. The light stick will wag behind the spoon or bait and prodcue a ton more light than a painted lure. You can also buy GITD fabric paints at Micheals. They come in some great fishing colors and I add them as accents on all kinds of baits.
  16. Reef runners do work well but I have found that most need some tuning out of the package. Without further details as far as what body of water, time of year here's my 2 cents on crankbaits for walleye as I could be considered a bit of an addict if you saw my boxes - who doesn't like a good crankbait!!!! In larger body of water like GB and LO I have had better catch ratio with minnow baits as follows cold water, spring and fall >>> slimmer baits like reef runners, renoskys, Yozuris. bombers long a, manns warm water periods >>> bigger shad and perch style bodies perform better, Shad Raps my fave For inland lakes like the Kawarthas I add fat body baits in the summer too like Fat raps, bombers and Don't ask colors as you'll get as many opinions as there are reef runner colours
  17. has gone pretty much through the whole family, even the dog since Xmas. I was the last one. Went to the doctors finally on Monday and he told me I have a bad case of strep throat.
  18. Darn Was hoping it was end of july so I would taken it. Oh well back to sleeping in the boathouse. I think I might have some pictures but they would be of the build or at least when Rick fell off the roof For anyone interested the cottage is ~ 5-10 minute boat ride from the Mine Rd landing. Located in the main hub area just at the entrance to Spawning Bay.
  19. Also what about Trout opener Tourney dates are May 1 start
  20. sounds like deja vu to me You'll be happy with the rod I'm looking at the 20-50 now 7'10 but I tell ya I have no place for these 1 peice rods that are longer than 7'. My War Room at home here where I store my fishing anf hunting stuff has a low ceiling
  21. Hey Seb I bought a Fig Rig Tooth Tamer from JB's a few years ago. Just love it. 7'6" 25-80lb - use it as a jerk bait rod, top water and has in a pinch worked out for bucktails but it is a little stiff Very light and fits up with a Abu6500 or Shimano 400 series nicely. I'm always looking for something different and everyone I know had St. Croix's Looking at another one this year but for bucktails
  22. Walked by their booth at the sportsmen show wearing my OFC hat. It got the attention of 1 gent in the booth
  23. Hey Rob I've got a 2001 Fish Hawk 1750 with a 115 Merc (not Optimax). Ran side by side with the same size Princecraft with a 115 Optimax and it spanked my boat hands down. Out of the hole and top end. I run a 19" prop and can hit by GPS 43.5 MPH. Your right about the troll if your talking walleye. I use my 115 all the time for salmon and its no problem. Can drop down to 0.9 MPH by GPS. Had a 21" Stainless on it as a test and it ran 45 MPH easy. I have a couple friends with Optimax and they all love em. Reliable and better on gas than my straight 115.
