check out the close up at about 1:00 mark. Sure looks like a chinook salmon to me.

Never thought about the smoker Wayne. Maybe a bit of a silver lining. About 8lbs of trout fillets in the freezer and the Leafs won. Maybe not so bad a day after all.

Headed up north with Malcolm for 1 last kick at catching few lakers before the ice gets too risky. Several trips this year have produced very good numbers but we always have to work for them each time out changing locations, figuring out depth and what they want. There was 3 of us this morning and we set up on a new deep water point that looked good on the map and started with 2 quick 2lbers for our other buddy. Both fish hit the bell sinker and minnow lines. Malcolm hits a nice 2 lber about a half hour later and then it was quite. As I have not had a sniff on my jig or minnow line, the ants in my pants get too much and I convince the guys to pull up and hit spot number 2. Another main lake deep point. This spot has a great drop off from shore that funnels a lot of fish through the day. It took a while for the fish to get active but it was a steady pick on both the jig and minnow line for the next 3 hours. Most fish were 1-3 lbs. After landed 3 quick ones in a row, I pulled out a bigger shiner and started to drop back down to the bottom. About half way down the line jumped and almost got pulled out of my hands. No time to set the hook - Fish on!!! For the next 20 minutes all I could do was hold on try and budge this fish off the bottom. Twice the fish almost spooled my Daiwa 1300 with 8lb. The swivel finally came through the hole and all I saw was this big head. Now here's where it went all wrong. I was fishing out of a 6 inch hole as I always have my manual auger packed and it was just faster to get my holes drilled rather than waiting for the 10" gas auger. Our other buddy had run and grabbed the gaff and all that we needed to do was guide the head up and stick the bottom jaw. Pretty easy as I thought to myself. Guide the trouts head into the hole and down the gaff goes. I couldn't believe that buddy slams the gaff into the side off the fish just behind the gill plate. The hole fills with blood and I look down in shock to see one of the prettiest big trout bleeding all over the ice. How are we gonna release it was all I could think of. I guess catch and release is not on everyone's priority. I really should have been more on top of what was happening at the hole and made sure he knew to go for the bottom jaw. Can you tell by the look on my face how thrilled I am at this moment. Well hopefully you all understand and don't rip me a new one. 34.5" laker 17.4 lbs. What really smarts is we meet up with our other buddies who were fishing a deep break about 2 miles away and heard how they landed and released a 36" 19 lber. As they showed me the pictures all I could do is sigh! We get back to the truck and here from a local that a 28 lber was also brought in that day.

Where's the trailer hitch go

Was up 2 weeks ago. there was a little over 12-14 inches on main lake, no snow and by the end of the Saturday top 2-3 inches were really soft and wet. The normal open water around some of the dock bubblers had grown quite a bit since Feb trips would imagine there's been a steady erosion since then. sorry haven't heard any more recent reports
-
Oh Wayne, defintitely not fair to post this report and me being stuck here in the city. Love Secret lake. It's been way to long since I got to do any ice fishing up there.

Yes, love that old school choice. I use the Tournament (or affectionately knows as Tank) SS700 and 1300 depending on the size of river. Both my reels are over 10 years old and are a smooth as the day they were bought. I missed out on the reel trade in at BPS. Forgot to put my kids old spincast reel in as I was gonna pick up a new 1300. BPS sells the Daiwa Tournament 1300 for $85 or so and that would have been $15 off with the trade in. Gotta love reels that don't have an internal bail spring.

Real simple process we did a ton when my buddy had his big boat on Lake ontario. You can cut fillets into smaller chunks. Leave them on the skin. Never tried smoking a steak but I'm sure there's some reason not to do it. Brine fillets for 24 hours in a fridge Brine is 3 cups water, 1 cup soya sauce, 2 cups brown sugar and 1/2 cup salt. There's a ton of similar brine recipes on the net. Pick one and then keep adjusting to your tatse. Place fillet meat side down into brine and stick it in the fridge. Remove fillets and then I usually pack on a bit more of the undissolved brown sugar, Put fillets skin side down and smoke until firm, 4-6 hours usually - depends on your smoker. Fillets should be firm right through. Watch them regularily until you get the hang of timing with your smoker. Get a bunch of different flavored chips and keep trying them until you settle on the one you like. I prefer the cherry and hickory Call me to help with the next step - eating!

Just thought I'd share my luck With my long distance calling plan called Niagara, Oakville, Toronto, Trenton, Orillia, North Bay stores to check on the 2 man Frabill huts No stock in any of those regions. They offered rain checks but from what 3 the stores told me the rain checks are only good for 30 days. My buddy seems to have picked up the last 2 man hut from trenton earlier in the week. Hung up and then thought Dang Why didin't I ask about the power auger!!!!!

Absolutely. the big key here to learn is to be able to pick a target and then hit it with a subtle soft water entry. Anyone can learn how to underhand cast but if your'e hitting the water hard you'll spook a lot of shallow water fish. I take my pitchin outfits out in the back yard about May and walk around pitching to the base of trees, under bushes in the garden. heck I even pretend the lawn chairs are docks. It gets me ready for opener way faster than trying to work the bugs out in the boat first few trips. Start trying to get accurate from 15-20 feet away. Distance will come later. get your technique down now. For me a 7ft rod has become my preference. I just feel more comfortable with that length. Another must to learn if you want to take your bass skills up a level is how to skip a bait like a tub or senko.

Like Rich says, as long as the fishes belly is not overly disteneded form being brought up to fast that fish is easily going to survive. Whitefish are suprisingly hardy. We catch a bunch up in temagami and they all take a few minutes to recup and thenm there off in a shot. Lakers have a bit more troubles with the swim bladder if broght up too fast.

It's me again #1 Extreme Reel Fan A few years back I picked up my first Extreme. I now have 6 and use these for all type of fishing especially flipping and pitchin for bass. Fished side be side with a Curado 200 I have. The Curados a better reel but for $69 I don't think you can buy a better bait caster. Cast spinnerbaits like a dream. I'll use the same reel pitchin 50lb braid for largemouth and then respool 10lb and fish topwater smallies. I really like them and they've never let me down. I bought a 200 sized last spring and it took all the abuse in Northern Manitoba catching 40" + pike and big lakers

I need HELP IDENTIFYING a MANUFACTURER of a particular LURE?

I've bought a few other GBC lures at Grimsby tackle. It might have been these guys with a big 3/$10 table that had a bunch on minnow baits at the Fishing show. -

Ricks correct, Overseas knock off of the Shad Rap. Little thicker body. I'm pretty sure I've seen these packaged under "The Great Canadain Bait Company. Somebody at the Spring Show had a clear out table of GCB baits but I don't know if any of these were in there. You can find these on ebay for sure. I've been buying the bigger Super Shad clones for a couple of years now. Get them on ebay from a guy in Florida. Paid $6 each including shipping. -
At Spring Fishing Show Radioworld was by far best $. I've been looking for a good deal for a few months and narrowed my choice down to LMS522 . I'll use this unit for more downrigging/depewater so the LMS has nice power and feature set. Still reviewing the Hummingbirds before I make a final choice. 787 is a better $ and has the side scanning upgrade available.

Was wandering through CTC at Mavis and Britannia on Monday and saw they were clearing out the Hummingbird 535 for $114. On Monday they had 2 units. Not posted on the web site so you can't check where else this might be available. You can go instore and ask them to check the store computer for anything nearby. I'm set on a new colour/GPS upgrade or else I would have bought 1. Long time Lowrance user but my buddy won a Hummingbird last year and has been prety impressed over the summer

Scorpion Tackle on the web has all of their pods in stock. From $39.99 up to $180 I bought my bite alarms off ebay. Paid $30 for 2 and they've worked great. Adjustable alarm and volume control. Take 9V battery and have never changed since they went in.

will a 4stroke 4 horse kiker push my 17 foot aluminum boat
Fang replied to 12pointer's topic in General Discussion
on bigger water with any kind of wind I would say no. I run a 17.5 creastliner and used a 6HP for a couple weeks on temagami as a kicker. I found on many days out there I would have liked a bit more power to battle the wind. If you've got one use it. If you're buying I would go bigger. -
Bronte Outdoors, just south of Bronte and QEW increased his line up of carp gear and should be adding as summer comes through. He has ground and boilies there too. Fishing world has the best selection and has brought in some European corn - all kinds of flavors.

look very close to lynx tracks we see up in temagami . Can't really tell by the picture but looks close. Not to many round tracks out but cats.
