  1. Dang, I thought it was a Lake Erie fish.
  2. A late winter this year? I thought the snow started the end of August
  3. Mine won`t go fast enough to make a ramp jump seem like a good plan! I can walk, but very limited and moving over the side of a boat can be risky business? Unless I have a big strong crew to help, thanks deg, whopper, joe.
  4. There is actually a program shown on the history channel about the formation of the Great Lakes and also mentions Lake Nip. According to the program after thousands of years with a mile of ice sitting on top of the area the land is still rebounding to it original height? I guess around 1 inch per year or something in that area. As water levels drop and more weight is removed the land may rise faster.
  5. I have used it and like it, if done right it is a lot more durable than regular paint. No idea where to get it in your area though.
  6. Aberdeen hooks are for panfish, even the bigger ones 4/0 or so, try to hook a minnow under the dorsal fin so it grabs meat but doesn`t contact their back bone, they will live a lot longer on the hook.
  7. When fishing them under a bobber or slip bobber, perch rig, spreader always hooked under the dorsal fin. Casting, trolling, on a jig head? through the lips.
  8. Wasn`t OMC having trouble with a couple of their motors and that was what forced their sale?
  9. Also got caught up in this mess. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2009/07/40_years_ago_holiday_storm_rav.html
  10. Blizzard of 77 for me too, my longest ride to work ever, 4 hours, and I got there and everyone had gone home. On the bright side? only 3 1/2 hours to get home, I already new what roads were closed.
  11. I have to agree with Bernie, I saw how the walleye population in Lake Erie took off once the commercial walleye netters licenses were bought out and it was banned here. Within 3-4 years there were walleye all over Lake Erie.
  12. most likely rural we would agree? if a structure fire has progressed enough to threaten/ignite adjacent properties its toast. especially with 3 ff's working off a 30 year old firetruck.( in a town whose 2500 residents, lets say own 500 homes, each contributing 75$ = 37500 not enough to cover one ffs wage for the year by the way not to mention half million dollar appparauts). almost ALL rural properties will be destroyed by fire in a rural situation, even in wealthy areas with serious volunteer or composite firefighters. 400 in taxes wont get you fire protection even with a 75 levy. Not sure exactly how much our volunteer firemen make, but it isn`t much more than minimum wage, and they only get it for training and when they are fighting a fire. They don`t hang around the station and get paid. There are some decent size small cities in the area here that still use a volunteer fire department. Instead of paying to have a full time fire crew it allows the mayor to make 100k a year or more. Them civil servants aren`t to civil when they run the town. If the people won`t pass tax increase for fire and police protection? It has to be passed to be included in the property taxes. My property taxes are half of what Medina Ohio`s are 10 miles away, but we don`t pay to support a mayor, city council, law director, chief cook and bottle washer and family and friends jobs of all. 3 trustee`s making 15-20 k a year part-time handle everything.
  13. TCIOZ, no answers, it`s getting to be a real strange world.
  14. "Well said. Whether or not this story is true, it doesn't matter. It's a sad state when people are willing to witness tragedy before their very eyes because of policy or money." Agreed, but, we have some of these same types of people writing opinions to their local newspapers claiming raising taxes amounts to Socialism or Communism. The same type of limited views that prevent us from having a national health care plan of Canadian style? The same people that seem dead set against it scream like crazy when they open their hospital bill, or don`t carry medical insurance at all. We have 3 or 4 communities in our area that haven`t paid their fees to the county sheriff`s department, but still won`t pass a levy raising their taxes, and still expect police protection? Kind of like fishing with out a license? The rest of us are expected to pay? what makes you so special? You gambled and lost?
  15. A union of states? Unfortunately that is not quite accurate, you would think congress here could get one thing right? Promote the general welfare of the people? It is really a complex situation, some communities are very small, and spread out. Volunteer firemen, and a county sheriff patrol for police protection, some one has to pay to support this? A fire truck and other equipment? Police vehicles? Some people and communities won`t pass tax hikes to cover these, a politician suggesting them may doom his career, so they make excuses. The small township I live in has a volunteer fire department, but luckily the people support it. We don`t have fire hydrants and some homes are 1/4 of a mile or more off the road and not all driveways are designed for a fire truck to enter. Fighting a fire with a garden hose may not work well? We have city water, but water to fight fires is usually trucked in or taken from the nearest pond, a time consuming and expensive proposition. Freedom doesn`t necessarily mean you don`t have to pay taxes and expect every one else to support your needs? Fire protection, police protection, schools? If you look at some of our states that make a big deal about having no state income tax, or very low taxes? They are usually first in line when they have an emergency and need federal tax dollars to fix it, then they complain about the federal income taxes. Really not sure of all the details involved in the story, but try buying home insurance after the home has burnt to the ground? My property taxes are $2000.00 a year, but I get fire and police protection and decent schools with that.
  16. what would be the target species?
  17. Only landed one ski by accident a small one, had some big fish on but not properly prepared for them.
  18. "This fellow had a suspended licence and was driving a borrowed vehicle or one not in his name anyway but apparently, not stolen according to the OPP." Here it is illegal to let some one that doesn`t have a license drive your vehicle. If it wasn`t stolen? It sounds like you need to get the owners insurance info and maybe a lawyer?
  19. It is real hard to assume any thing when bass fishing. In the Cleveland Ohio area myself so the weather is a little different? Maybe 3-4 weeks behind yours? A buddy was fishing pick up bass tournaments here as late as December? Ice on the edges of the lake that melted once the sun started shining on it. His go to bait? a vibee, a blade blade, pitched to pockets in the weeds and allowed to flutter down and lift, if they didn`t grab it on the way down they would bust it on the lift. There really is no way to tell what or where to try, you need to get out on the water and experiment, locations, lures. I have caught smallies and largemouth here as late as Thanksgiving on tubes, crankbaits, jig and pigs and even plastic worms and lizards. Late September on the Georgian Bay you might find the smallies and largemouth together in 15-20 feet of water, the next day in much shallower water, 2-5 feet. I could only assume it was because of the location of food for them. If you use live bait a 3-5 inch chub or shiner will attract attention if fish are there, but I usually only fished lures. A tube, white or green pumpkin, bait fish or craw fish patterns might be a good starting point? Never really much luck this late in the year on surface lures for bass, but something like a heddon torpedo that you can work slowly might draw a hit. If the shore line isn`t working? a point with a good deal of depth changes or a weedy or rocky flat with some deep edges might be a good place to try.
  20. Bass, pike, walleye, ski`s will all eat now, it`s a question of locating them.
  21. Nice looking stick, quality work and low key.
  22. If you are just getting started? I would suggest a spinning rod and reel, medium action 6-7 foot depending on what you are comfortable with and a decent reel in a 2000-3000 series size. It is an all around setup that can be used for many species with 8-10 mono line or 20-30 test braid. Also a bait casting reel and a 6 1/2 - 7 foot medium - medium heavy rod and 14-20 pound test mono or 50 pound braid. Just starting points and you can work around your budget as to prices for them. Salmon, Muskies, big fish of any species will require a lot more specialized tackle although even then there may be some use for more than one species.
