Quality gear is the key. Where is the weakest link? Most guys get broken off. If you have thirty pound test and a good rod, I think that for a lot of fish you should be able to set the drag to close to the tightest setting and let the rod absorb a lot of the punishment. I did have a 40 pound Chinook on in BC, no stopping that one. I had the right gear with the right sized spool. She just took off, and even at an incredibly high drag setting she peeled off 100 ft of line before you could say boo...and was in the lumber.

You did very well! I'm curious, at what depth where you locating lakers...and what type of lure was working. I had no hits on the same weekend and was in the same general location.

Paul has been fishing with me for ten years since he was four. We go up to the same cottages each year and I usually see him on the dock morning and evenings. At the resort he would be about the only other fishermen as fanatical about fishing as I. This year he caught the biggest fish of the week at the resort and this was by far the biggest fish that he caught of his life. It was 9 pm and he wanted to catch a walleye. I said why not drop a worm of the side of the dock. Immediately the rod tip bends in the shape of a "J". Thats not fighting like a walleye! With a little bit of coaching he did just fine and after about 10 minutes hard and steady work he wore the fish out. No way he could muscle it in with his gear. Afterwards when he looked at his jig hook it was almost completely straightened. Any guess on the weight? I'm not that good at that, figured over 5 and under 10 pounds. I got out twice to fish this August in Ontario near Huntsville and Mattawa. I found subsurface temps very cold and fish scattered. Patterns were all off and I had my best luck shallow. No lakers and no walleye. The few bass and pike I did catch were decent but unremarkable, sorry no pics. I did however take some pics of landscapes. I like to use them for backgrounds on my computer. Hope you enjoy some of them. Promising looking but never a fish here. On the evening troll. My mom likes to come along for the scenery and as long as I don't go too fast. She doesn't mind at all if I fish at certain spots. Like this one. Early morning troll.

I was beginning to think you were a FISHING MACHINE. It's good for the rest of us to see that even good fishermen have slow days. This type of report should help the rest of us not to get discouraged on the water. I just like to be out there and "read" the conditions. It helps me for the next time I am out.

I LOVE that Northern Ontario bias...keep it going :w00t: Who wants to catch walleye where the only challenge is finding them. How many times have I seen the walleye death spiral where they give up the fight early in the battle and come into the boat spiral fashion. Then they get tough in the boat and flare their gills at you. You can just see it in the posture of the guys fishing walleye on the post...no battle in the foreseeable future. Give me a snot rocket any day, at least they are aggressive and don't mouth the lure forever. And comparing a mid 40 pike to a trophy walleye...the big girls make your heart race with their power and cunning. The trophy walleye...stays a little longer on the bottom and gives you some extra head shakes. The only thing going for the walleye is the nice colouring and easy filleting.

I'm thinking Mackerel might be in. You don't need a license to fish the ocean. Get some little Cleos 3/4 ounce and toss them off a peer. Lots of fun...catch dinner every night in 1/2 an hour.
