  1. The active enrolment is way down, as are The Elks, Knights of Columbus and the Shiners. As the members age and die off there are few new recruits to take their place. These organizations do so much good that is seldom publicized. I have often volunteered to help these organizations out without becoming a member. Each year there are fewer and fewer members. It is very sad. In this area the members are mostly in their 60s , 70s and 80s.
  2. Now, now, it' was all part of the "common sense revolution" to sell the 407. Thank you mike harris. Now if Wynne had her way, she's pay someone to take it.
  3. I bought a bulk spool(2000 yds) of 12lb dacron from Cabelas years ago. I think it was a 'squid' line. I half spool each reel with it and then fill the rest (200-300yds) with mono of my choice, usually 10lb test. Never have had a problem. Using 4 different AngSpec float reesl and 2 Islanders for over 20 years that way. I cut back some mono after each trip for wear and tear.. Once I see the dacron on the spool I strip off the remainder and respool with fresh mono. Only got to the backing once. Hooked something big near a creek mouth on Manitoulin and it just kept going. Finally snapper the leader, never saw it . All my reels work flawlwessly now for 20+ years. Other than a drop of oil each year and a careful cleaning , there have never been any issues. I have a habit of babying my reel anyway. Go with the dacron flyline backing, just be careful as some backing is made from some other non-dacron stuff. It's a small cost to keep your pin running without any issues. Just my 2 1/2 cents.......muddler
  4. Genius! Simple, cheap(free) and effective. Now why didn't I think of that? Thanks! muddler
  5. Looks like a ratchet that truckers would use or for heavy machinery. What make/manufacturer is it? I did a Google search and there's quite a few 1" ratchets out there.
  6. Good one Dave! Like I said before, the one thing I agree with Donald Trump, "... bomb the s_ _ t out of them....".
  7. Here ya go. http://news.nationalpost.com/news/toronto-born-man-who-vowed-to-destroy-canada-in-isil-video-added-to-interpol-wanted-list Now let's all bury our heads in the sand and maybe it will all go away.
  8. I hope you're right and it's a disaster for ISIS. The do nothing because it's not in my backyard ideology only encourages these pigs. They WILL NOT stop until they destroy the world. How many innocent people must suffer and die before we ALL get it.? Just about the only thing that I agree with Donald Trump, "...bomb the s_ _t out of them....". These animals will behead anyone they don't like. They have no morals or values that belong in this world. France has pledged to stand up and deal with savagery with military might. It may not be the best move but I have yet to hear (including from this board) any better ones. Just ask any one of the 129 families grieving their losses in France or any of the 350+ wounded survivors over there. Got any better ideas? I didn't think so! Maybe Justin will finally grow a pair and do the right thing. muddler
  9. My son did that for about a year. Soft music (Puff the magic dragon was my favourite), a snuggle and many sleepless night for me worked most times. I found that a lot of active time with my son got him to sleep better at night most days. Sometimes a long ride in the 4 runner would work. Got stopped by the cops a few times at 3:00am, funny they all seemed to understand and sympathise with me. Wouldn't trade those times for a million bucks. Eventually buddy started to sleep through the night. At 17 (years) now I can't seen to get him up in the morning. Gonna try" Puff the magic dragon" in the mornings (lol). I even enjoyed changing drapers. It would take about an hour and I usually was a mess afterwards. We'd giggle and laugh at everything for hours. Didn't get much done those days, but what a blast. Enjoy every bit of the kid as he grows. Before you know it there grown up and gone. It's not such a big deal, part of parenting. Just my 2 cents.......muddler
  10. Maybe the First Nations are correct, get rid of all the immigrants. You and I (99% of "Canadians') are immigrants or come from immigrant heritage. Yup, we should all go back to where we came from. What a narrow minded view. Canada has long be a refuge for people that were escaping to a "better" life. The stue of Liberty has a plaque that has this part of a phrase, ""Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"" It is the immigrants that made this country great, don't forget that. muddler
  11. Pastor Martin Niemöller (1892–1984) wrote and spoke about the cowardice of German intellectuals following the Nazis' rise to power and the subsequent purging of their chosen targets, group after group. "First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me." I think that says it all. muddler
  12. Good point on sonar and SI. Back in the 70's when a fish finder was a needle or flashing unit (I still have my old ones) I thought they were just tools to 'HELP' you find structures. Now with the new electronic technology I watch as rich rookies simply go out with GPS coordinated and pinpoint spots that they bought. Then use the sophisticated sonar to isolate and zero in a spot. Beyond the skill of pressing a a few buttons, they are on fish immediately. I put my electronics away many years ago and still fish old school. IMO drones for hunting are no different than sonar now for fishing. I live in northern Ontario, and I watch truck after truck hauling ATV's into the bush. GPS coordinates programmed for known hot spots for deer hunting. Most of the spots are "baited" with apples to boot. And this is a sport? They all kill their deer and fill their tags. The tracking and ways of the bush are all but gone. without the technology most of these "outdoorsmen" couldn't shoot their foot. Drones are just the next phase in the slaughter. I love technology, but when it removes the true skills of the outdoors, I object to it's uses. Fly fishing has remained simple for centuries. With innovations and improvements in the quality of the gear, you still make and tie on a imitation of and insect and you have to present it it naturally to fool the fish. No batteries needed. Maybe it's time to push back the technology in the outdoors. Just my 2 cents........muddler
  13. I like the comments that Babcock made to the Leafs. Finally a coach that says it the way it is. http://www.torontosun.com/2015/10/27/babcock-lays-into-leafs-after-yet-another-loss I agree 100%. That work ethic and desire to win is a must at the pro level. Never mind the score. The fans come to watch a hockey game that demonstrates the best of the best (pros). Just mailing it in is NOT acceptable. I'll watch PeeWees if the players are NOT giving up. Way ta go Babs. I may become a Leaf fan yet.
  14. That's what the other 29 other teams are doing too. It is the culture if the team that has to change, I've said it here for years. Babcock is doing that successfully so far. The consistent work ethics is what was always lacking in Toronto. This season I already see a much different attitude on the ice. The Laffs Leafs are a team worth watching and cheering for so far. Looking good Taranta!
  15. Allllllllllllllright! I don't matter if we win 1-0 or 14-2 a win is a win. I love what I saw to day. KC can only pitch around the middle if the line up for so long. Bring on Friday Go Jay's.
  16. Well it's balls to the wall time. Gotta let all out from here on in. The good news is that were down 2-0 against Texas. Nothing more dangerous than a team fighting for its life. Not making excuses but EE and Tulo don't seem 100%. Osama (sp?) and Sanchez seem to be hurting too. Ok, KC poked the bear let's see what happens tomorrow. Go Jays!
  17. Not the purdiest win, but a win none the less. This team ain't goins (pun intended) away.
  18. Message sent to KC. 9-2 after 3! Cueto .....gone. Roger centre is a rocking. Go J's.
  19. Purrrdy quiet in Kansas right now, Price is dialled in big time. Ya can hear a pin drop there. Oppppps! 4-3 now.
  20. Oppppps. We hit a pothole. Couple of our guys are hurting (EE, Tulo). No problem, we just start a new winning streak.
  21. It's almost time. The Rainman cometh! 11 game winning streak is still intact. 8 to go!
  22. READ! ......jig and twister tail.....
  23. 11 game winning streak is still on. WOW! I love what RA did after the game. Runs around the stadium high fiving the fans. Love it.
