  1. It could be, I see your point. However, I wouldn't mind being "checked" more often if it meant the resources are more protected. Would be a trade off, IMO.
  2. Sorry if blunt - but NO. You have be an apprentice first. Like starting a custom home building company because you have a nice hammer and instructions on how to use the saw.
  3. So do I Michael! Some solid points and great opinions all! I see where some think funding themselves with fines might be a slippery slope, but if you are not actively participating in illegal activities what would you be worried about.
  4. Good points. It is easy to look from the outside in, but wouldn't you think if all revenue generated including property(including vehicles, atv's etc.) sold by auctions plus fines would be enough if put in one pot to fund only CO's.
  5. Seems alot of anglers/hunters believe there is a lack of CO's in Ontario. I was just finishing up a salary cost planning project here at work and it got me thinking. The cost for a CO, I am guessing, is say approx. $175,000 a year. i.e. Salary, benefits, pension, equipment/gear/unform/truck, vacation/sick time cover off, staff support etc.. Wondering if a CO could "support" their own position through fines, confiscating property etc.. Just thinking more CO's = more revenue = more service Just throwing this out there, would you assume a CO generates more then $175,000 annually through enforcement?
  6. Geez Roy LOL A little different landscape to bass fish then that boat house picture you posted a while ago Garry.
  7. I hear ya there, nothing more trying then waiting for the big boy to come out from the tree you drew up on him on and he decides to take a breather. lol
  8. I am not sure about a course, but maybe more education could be published in and around the ethics of bow hunting. For a couple months before the season I practice with my compound from tree stand heights. I also bring the target with me to my stands and shoot each different laneway at the target. Afterwards I mark with trail tape the pin/yardage I used by the target for the kill shot. Sounds maybe alittle extreme, but it is EASY to be fooled by distances. And it is deflating to have everything fall into place after so much effort to miss an animal for lack of prep or practice. That being said, no matter how much prep and practice, things happen. It works for me and I have vital shot every animal after doing so. Before I had a tendency to tickle their bellies with the arrow
  9. I hear ya, hopefully not the case. Plus they threw in a few pictures of ice fshing, so here's hoping! There are a few lakes I would love to fish crappie through the ice.
  10. Holy Crappie! That opens up a lot of lakes for icefishing! This is great news, thanks Ron for posting.
  11. Chances are you spooked them. One may of been trying to call a fawn that may of been with it. Usually a loner doe with give a giant snort (clearing their nose IMO) before they bolt. Scares the livin heck out of ya when your walking to a stand in pitch dark and walk up on one.
  12. Give it a shot bud, hope it works out for ya. I don't bait anymore, after years of hunting a property we figured out their paths to and from bedding areas. Pretty cool actually, the big boy (14plus, haven't seen him this year, though I took his son a 10point a couple days ago) uses a row of cedars maybe 10 ft wide through hardwoods, and always 1 hour before shooting time. I am hoping one day to catch him after a long night with a ladie and he is running late. They are big for a reason!
  13. I have caught a ton of them over the years and come to think of it, I have never caught one under 3 lbs that I can recall. Things that make you go hmm.
  14. Great shot on the grouse! Maybe try bringing the apples/carrots for a couple nights after midnight or early morning 2-3am. Pain, but may bring them around later (within a 1/2 hr before sunrise anyways) While to sit, but if they are around while dark, you may keep them close and call'em back. Worked for me once, coincidence, maybe.
  15. Ling Fling! Golden, Molson.
  16. Thanks, much appreciated. As I assumed, but you know what they say about assuming. I will take a friend up on a last minute offer now! Cheers
  17. Hi all, quick question. I have searched the FAQ of a couple sites with no quick answer. If a guy hunts only with a compound for the last few years and hurts his shoulder at hockey, would he need a PAL to use a crossbow til he recovers? Thanks
  18. Fred's Autobody in Bowmanville was highly recommended to us. Small shop, great service. Tow truck guys get a "cut" for their referals.
  19. The Niagara is the closest thing to a "cast and catch" fishery we have in southern Ontario when you hit the right day IMHO. It can be a guides dream! Not to mention the Bar.
  20. Hear ya there Doc. And if they have their own business they have quite a few tax breaks and write offs etc...
  21. I dunno, down there is a ton of beav...... ok, I'll stop there. Amazing post.
  22. Ran a charter and guide service for a few years. Ran all 4 seasons, year round. You may solicit quite a few opinions on this from various guides, but I'll share a tid bit of my expereince. IF you love fishing and are looking for a hobbie biz/excuse to get a fancy rig thats fine. Maybe raise some moola to help pay your way to fish. You have to be diverse and experienced angling wise. Things happen on the water (weather etc..) and you have to sometimes have 3 or 4 back up plans to get your paying clients on fish. Full time, man, there is maybe a handfull I know that do it. Couple are on the board here. I used to, but with a young family to support and spend time with, there is NO way. Unless you can support everything on one body of water year round and reside close. My experience and research lead me to believe you had to be diverse and cover a large area and various styles of angling to not limit yourself. Over head is very high, (boats, trucks, gas, high-end gear, oil, insurance(s), maintinance, boat supplies, memberships etc...) Gear for various styles and target species ie. downriggin, bass, muskie, steelhead(rivers), ice fishing, flatline/planers etc.. Adds Up! It was fruitful for us, even hired guys to help out. For us, you were gone for most days from 5 am and rolling home around 8/9pm. During our fall Quinte and winter Niagara trips I'd be gone weeks at a time. Sure I had a blast, loved alot of it, but with anything things change when your passion becomes your only avenue to put food on your kids table. If you have more specific questions, you can pm me if you'd like.
  23. Thanks for taking the time register and post a reply. You are obviously someone in the know.
  24. There's your Makerting angle Jacques .... "Dual Action Spooks" Go Ahead, she'll think it's for her!
