  1. Salmon...or Salmon anglers?
  2. Pike - Weapons of mass consumption
  3. Seriously, I have seen all 3 of those items in use over the years
  4. My 2 cents... If this is truly what you enjoy doing, perhaps try to see if you can get some assistance from family members, or take some time away from studies to work full or part time to save enough up that you can return to it in 4, 6, 12 months. If you aren't sure this is the rewarding and fulfilling career you once thought it was, don't look at it as a waste of time. Instead, try to learn from it and use it as your inspiration to not make the same mistakes again and end up in a position where you are regretting a decision you made. People change careers several times throughout their lives these days, and most would tell you that the change was the best thing that they did. I believe we need to constantly challenge ourselves, and put ourselves in a position that is almost scary, to achieve the best we are capable of. Good luck, and I hope in a year or 2 you will look back on this point in your life just chuckle and realize it wasn't so bad after all. Be positive, and good things will happen. Tony
  5. The Salmon have run up the creeks, go check it out. Volleyball nets, Machetes, and Baseball bats seem to be the popular method of capture Tony
  6. "I've musky fished for 35+ years and have yet to lose a fish" I find that hard to believe...nobody can claim that with 100% certainty. It's a fact that a small percentage of all species of fish suffer post-release mortality, even though they appear to swim away strong. Kudos to you musky_man, for understanding that certain fish require specialized tools and methods for ensuring greater live-release success. I don't think there is any point in 'preaching to the choir' in this case as it was an incidental catch, and the fish was captured and consumed according to the provincial fishing regulations. Tony
  7. GREAT idea...also what Bunk said
  8. On another board, John Tory actually spent a day fishing with Darryl Chronzey. Now if any of you know anything about Darryl, you know that he speaks his mind and stands by his word. He put John Tory through the wringer, sending a barrage of fishery related questions at him. In the end, Chronzey was impressed, and truly believes that if elected John Tory will follow through on his promises. (See the latest issue of Ontario Out of Doors, it has an election special with each platforms position on our hot natural resource based topics) I responded to that thread stating this: "...it may be just politics, but for once fishing and hunting is getting into politics. " Agreed, If I am going to vote for a liar, at least the liar I vote for will have mentioned the word 'fish'... And before you all jump on me for calling them liars, I mean it in a political sense, as in they won't keep all their pre-election promises. So what the heck, I'll go out on a limb this year and vote for the guy who went fishing with Darryl Tony
  9. I'll be there! Should be fun, 1 fish limit, it can be anyones win... Tony
  10. The uglier the weather, the better the fishing for salmon at this time of year It's going to be a zoo down there, avoiding like the plague myself Tony
  11. Not necessarily Louis, check the consumption guidelines for Chinook salmon. No fish over 26" is to be consumed. That fish is certainly over 26". I'll agree though, it is a grey area and an ethics question. Do you keep fishing for fish that you tire to death??? If the fish was that exhausted, you may want to consider beefing up your equipment to be able to land the fish quicker. Also, warm water temperatures may have played a role as well. Tony
  12. Yikes! Glad to hear everyone is safe, but a scary moment indeed. It's funny how we get complacent over time with things, yet 1 incident like that and you get snapped back to reality. Safety is going to be on the forefront when I get my boat. You want to go for a ride on my boat, sure...but you'll be wearing a lifejacket and will know where all the safety equipment is on board and how to operate it in case of emergency, no questions. You should submit this story to Lund Wayne, not like they need the re-inforcement, but if it helps another family choose that boat over something 'cheaper' than you could very well be saving lives indirectly. No other boat I've been on is as stable in rough water as a Lund with the IPS hulls. Tony
  13. Sweet! It's all about the GLOW! The thing that always amazes me is that you can catch Salmon casting lures at night, but try trolling for them and it's a real challenge to get fish... Tony
  14. I'll go out on a limb, since I'm not sure who makes the kits, and say they are junk. You're better off selecting lures and gear targeted towards the species you intend to fish for, rather than miscellaneous kits. Tony
  15. "I'm fishing between 8-12 in the morning, do the fish turn off during that time? " I'd say you will have a better chance fishing between dusk and dawn. Glow lures as Marko mentioned and rattlin' baits will work too. Have fun! Tony
  16. Nice...LoL
  17. Spiny rayed fishes (Walleye, Perch, Bass) will be fatally damaged by major atmospheric pressure changes (Eg, air bladders forced out their mouth, bulged eyes, etc) This usually occurs at depths greater than 1 atmosphere or approximately 33 feet deep. That means if you are fishing around 30 feet deep or more for spiny rayed fishes, expect casualties. Soft rayed fishes (Salmon, Trout, Whitefish) can deal with the changes much better, and can actually 'burp' out the expanding air as they approach the surface. They call it 'The Bends' when it happens to humans (Scuba Divers), and it's essentially the same thing that is going on inside a fish - a rapid expansion of air. Tony
  18. Sounds like a productive day on the water. The Steelehead eggs would be 'immature' and still in the 'skein' at this time of year. As the season progresses the eggs will really increase in size (think about 3 to 4 times what you saw) and won't be as tightly packed in the membrane. At this time they can be scraped out or left attached to the membrane and can be used for bait. I actually prefer using skein or eggs scraped from the skein as opposed to loose eggs that fall out of a fish. My theory is that it contains much more scent and the eggs are softer. You could have certainly kept the eggs for bait though, good to know for next time. Tony
  19. Sounds like they had a trip to remember for sure, even despite dad loosing ALL those fish Looking forward to the photos! Tony
  20. Lakair for sure! I haven't even been yet and I can already tell I am going to enjoy it there. Tony
  21. That's not the Ganny...
  22. That news is sooo 2003
  23. I tend to lose perspective when it comes to fishing related purchases, is that a lot of money???
  24. You're going to Longsault and you're NOT fishing for Carp!??? I don't think there are any other fishing opportunities around there that can compare to the World Class carp fishing...you may want to reconsider Tony
  25. DouG is your guy. I'd go with the 76CSX model though for the few extra bucks.
