  1. I have the previous generation fugi and very happy with it. The new fugi has been toughened up quite a bit. In the end they are all just point and shoot anyway, so why not get the small one that is also the cheapest. You can then buy more skunk baits with the $s saved.
  2. I'm not as sharp on my birds as I once was, but I'll say American bittern.
  3. http://www.nugget.ca/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=2708747 A family fishing tale Father, son net monsters 34 years apart HEAD: A family fishing tale Posted By DAVE DALE The Nugget Posted 9:00pm Aug 11, 2010 A father and son from New York have an eerie fishing tale to share after visiting on Lake Nipissing this week. Mike Hoffman, 31, landed his first muskie Monday afternoon, an impressive predator stretching 50.5 inches and weighing in at almost 33 pounds. He caught it exactly 34 years to the day after his dad, Rob Hoffman, landed his first muskie at the same lodge in 1976. "He's been bugging me and bugging me that he never caught a muskie," said the elder Hoffman, adding they finally decided to return together to give him a chance. Rob Hoffman's muskie was a bit longer at 54.5 inches and almost 12 pounds heavier. "I took it right home and had it mounted," Rob said. He hasn't caught one that big since. The last time the duo fished Nipissing together was 25 years ago and Mike grew up eyeing his father's trophy and believing the big one was waiting for him up north. They used the same lure, although Rob said the tandem muskie spinners were different colours. The fish hit right at the boat not from from the island lodge and it took a brief run before returning and being netted. "It surprised me when it hit, I was not expecting something like that," Mike said. "It was exciting." They're staying until Saturday and were out fishing again with another muskie about four feet long following a lure right to their boat. Sharon Dickson, of the lodge, said it was great to hear the father and son talk about their catch and how it was such a coincidence Mike caught it on Aug. 9, just like his dad. "And he released it too, so that's awesome," she said.
  4. Nosbonsing isn't drawn down in the fall the way Nipissing is. So while I would expect it to be lower than "normal", due to the lack of snow etc., I don't think it would be down more than a few inches. Having said that, I haven't been there this year.... so?????? BTW my fishing this year was the best I've ever had on Nipissing, and I grew up there.
  5. Maybe when she is older she'll let you work on her crew for her fishin' show.
  6. Some points to consider: Are you fishing in rivers, ponds or lakes? How big? How deep? How big and how heavy is the canoe plus gear? You might find that if the bottom is hard you might not get much of a "catch" with a light grappling type. Some other options that will work in certain situations are a "grabber" type attachment that you can use if you are close to shore. You clamp it on to a tree branch or other suitable structure. A great weight saving option, particularly useful when portaging, is a heavy mesh bag that you fill with rocks. Sometimes finding the rocks isn't easy though. 2 cents???
  7. Why? It's not heavy enough to be a good anchor?
  8. not much info here: http://www.bymnews.com/news/newsDetails.php?id=72676 This might be the original one that Wayne tried: http://www.cbc.ca/canada/windsor/story/2010/08/02/ont-niagara-yacht-rescue-100802.html?ref=rss

  10. http://www.nugget.ca/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=2692782 Floating logs pose danger in Callander Bay Chief Commanda II captain urges boaters to be on the lookout Posted By MARIA CALABRESE The Nugget Posted 11:30am, July 30, 2010 The captain of the Chief Commanda II is on the lookout for floating logs and urging boaters in smaller vessels to do the same after a couple of near misses this week. "They float right to the surface. If you're clipping along and you hit it directly with the hull, it can do some damage if you hit it the wrong way," said Capt. Rich Stivrins. Most are in the north part of the bay, he said, with others as far south as Burford Point near the North Bay Yacht Club. One of Lake Nipissing scenic cruise tours takes the 320-passenger all aluminum twin hull vessel past the dock at Callander Bay at about 7:25 p.m. Stivrins said he spotted one of the logs 60 to 90 metres to the right of the dock during a Thursday evening cruise, and others along the Osprey Crescent subdivision. Stivrins recalls a couple of close calls this week, using binoculars to manoevre the Chief through the bay. He has made security calls for the benefit of boaters with a VHF radio, and is urging recreational boaters, anglers and others who will be on the lake this long weekend to be on the lookout for these potential dangers. He has been working on the Chief since 2003 and has seen these logs pop up before, likely linked to the logging history in the bay. Stivrins said low water levels and winds may have dislodged some of the logs recently and are pushing them closer to shore. [email protected]
  11. Just a heads-up guys, only northern leopard frogs are allowed to be used as bait in Ontario.
  12. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/technology/science/huge-numbers-of-female-fish-spark-questions-over-alberta-waters-safety/article1656195/ Huge numbers of female fish spark questions over Alberta water’s safety Water in Red Deer and Oldman rivers contain large variety of hormone-affecting chemicals, say researcher. Calgary — The Canadian Press Published on Thursday, Jul. 29, 2010 1:57PM EDT Last updated on Thursday, Jul. 29, 2010 2:23PM EDT Alberta researchers say gender-bending fish in the province's rivers are sending a concerning message about whether the water is safe to drink. Two University of Calgary professors have been monitoring a small species of minnow in the Red Deer and Oldman rivers in the southern part of the province. They found in some locations, females made up as much as 90 per cent of the population, far higher than the 55 to 60 per cent that is normally found. At nearly every site studied, male fish also showed elevated levels of a protein that is normally only found in the blood of females. The researchers found a large variety of chemicals that affect hormones in the water, both man-made and the result of agriculture. Professor Lee Jackson says their study doesn't show whether the chemical levels are safe for humans to drink, but the findings are a concern and more research is needed.
  13. http://www.thebarrieexaminer.com/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=2691075 Charge laid in police boat mishap Posted By RAYMOND BOWE Posted 3:50pm July 29,2010 A civilian employee of the Barrie police department has been charged after a dinghy flew off a trailer two weeks ago in the city's northwest end. The 21-foot Zodiac came to rest at the intersection of Cundles Road and Livingstone Street West around 8:30 a.m., July 14. No other vehicles were involved and no one was injured. A long-time male employee of the police department who was driving the vehicle has been charged under the Highway Traffic Act with failing to secure a load. Police say a secondary chain attaching the boat to the trailer had not been secured. The boat was sent to CO2 Inflatables in Oakville for repairs, but the bill amount was not available on Thursday. The Zodiac is back in the water and will be patrolling the lake for this weekend's Kempenfest. "It's all set to go," said Const. Rob Adam, adding damage to the boat wasn't as significant as initially believed. The boat was being prepared for its summer duties when the incident occurred. It was due to be launched into Lake Simcoe at the Barrie Marina.
  14. My preference has been to use a fishing vest of some sorts. Lots of options/ styles out there.
  15. Ontario Out of Doors, August 2010 edition, has an article about choosing a muskie rod or rods.
  16. Murphy is a Lab/ retriever cross He'll be 5 this fall. 2 months old
  17. Hey Marty the Pens just had a photo op at Heinz field for the winter classic. Are you hardy enough to sit outside on New years for a hacky game? I bet that plummer ain't gonna want to come up from Virginia to watch his Caps play shinny. :canadian:
  18. Who says they left their previous sponsor? Maybe the reel/rod company felt their monies could be better used elsewhere? Contracts expire, life goes on. It's just fishin'.
  19. My understanding of the Muskoka incident is that the people were body surfing in a small set of rapids, and from the ministers own description he almost became a victim himself in the churning water.
  20. Technically that is a drive-in, not a drive thru. Gift-wrap a package of new underwear for your dad, and stick a tim card in the pouch.
  21. The low water did not negatively impact my fishing this June. I was in the south shore area not the west arm. Don't worry about the rocks you almost hit last year.. they'll be easy to see. It's the other ones that you'll have to watch-out for. The bass will be in the same areas and the pike will still be looking for baitfish. A spinnerbait is always a good go to lure for both pike and bass. I'll just about always throw a topwater lure first though, if the conditions are right, because it is the most fun way to catch fish. When my brother and I are in the boat we try to at least start off fishing two different types of lures. Have fun and don't forget your camera.
  22. -a lightbulb goes off- Corn is in season, I'm gona' corner the market and start out-fitting 6, 8 and 10inch cobs with trebles and sell them for 25 bucks a piece.
  23. Very nice captures. I particularly like the first one.
