  1. I’m heading out to the east coast tomorrow for our annual homecoming pilgrimage. We usually drive through the states, saves on gas, better highways and have friends in the Boston area to visit. The highlight of the trip for me is the stop we make at the Cabela’s in Portland, Maine. It is an absolutely beautiful store. It’s the only Cabela’s I’ve been in and is way nicer than any of the BPS I’ve been to in the states. None of the BPS I’ve been into have compared to the BPS in Toronto though.
  2. I had a terrible experience there a while ago with a rod replacement. I had broke a BPS brand rod the first time I used it and wanted it replaced but couldn't find the receipt. Since I don't get down to TO often it was close to a year by the time I got back with it. All they would do for me was give me a store credit for the cheapest they had ever sold it for. Since it had recently been discontinued and replaced with a "new" model they had it on clearance at some time. The clearance price was about half of what I paid. Even though the new model was virtually identical but a new colour or something insignificant I would have been happy with a straight replacement but they wouldn't do it. I was extremely unhappy with the service and at that point I just wanted to take the money back but they wouldn't even do that.
  3. Yes, my mistake. It is the Canadian Wiggler that I have had success with.
  4. Here is the youtube link to a Dave Mercer Webcut of him fly fishing for gar.
  5. Dave Mercer did an episode a year or 2 ago all about gar fishing. Anyone remember where he shot that episode? They look incredibly fun to catch, like having a wild banshee on the line. I have seen them at the marina harbour in Kincardine. In Ontario you can find either the Spotted Gar or the Longnose Gar.
  6. Only a few seconds with a flashlight or I now use a flashlight app on my phone that uses the built in LED and they glow way brighter and last much longer than the popular glow cleos. They cast out a country mile as well.
  7. You have to try the often overlooked Canadian Wobbler but I can't stress enough the effectiveness of the small (about 1.5" long) casting spoons from Moonshine Lures. One charge up and they glow incredibly bright for hours. They can be hard to find but I have seen them at Bass Pro and Rainbow Sports in Waterloo.
  8. A very interesting thread, a few of my experiences come to mind. Dust Devil While driving near Lucknow a few years ago a large dust devil about 6-7 feet high slowly crossed the road in front of us. It then travelled right up a driveway for more then a hundred feet before it died away right at the house. Whooping cranes While fishing at a small remote lake in Grey county Ontario. I heard very loud coming from across the lake. As they moved closer I was able to see 3 Whooping cranes doing some sort of mating dance. They would do it for a while then move to another location and do it again. The sound was so loud it seemed to reverberate for miles. Fighting deer Many years ago back in New Brunswick I was in the back yard stacking firewood with my father. We started to hear a loud commotion in the woods just beyond our yard and soon recognized the grunts of a couple whitetail bucks. They were snorting and going on and then all hell broke loose. There was the sound of sticks and bushes breaking, then the sound of their hooves running around. Because it was after dark it was hard to see what was going on but they would run out onto our back lawn then the unmistakable sound of antlers crashing and rattling. They would retreat into the bushes then come running back out and clash again. This went on for 5 or 10 minutes. Swarming eels While fishing a large lake in New Brunswick over 20 years ago, I noticed a disturbance on the surface of the water quite some distance away. I motored over to see what it was and it turned out the be a large ball of American Eels. There must have been dozens if not hundreds of them. The ball was about 5 or 6 feet in diameter. It should be mentioned that there are still plenty of eels left in NB and small commercial fishery exists. So it’s not uncommon to see them but this ball of them I had never seen before. Since they mate out to sea I still don’t know what they were doing. Perhaps there was something large in the middle they were feeding on and they were all trying to tear it apart. Bobcat in the bushes While bird hunting back in NB, I noticed a pair of eyes close to the ground staring at me from some thick brush. It was a grey foggy morning and the eyes seemed to be glowing. They never moved. I stood still and stared back for a very long time trying to figure out what they belonged to. I finally realized they were attached to a bobcat. We just stared at each other for probably 10 minutes until I finally relented and moved on. I had never seen one in the wild before and have never seen one since.
  9. Try hanging around the weigh station for the derby in the evening around dusk. There are usually lots of fresh roe available going down the drains of the fish cleaning stations.
  10. I have to disagree. I fish with braid now on all my rods and ALWAYS tie on a 4/5 foot section of flouro with a uni to uni knot. It is a very easy knot to tie and reliable. For your application I would use about 12lb flouro. Just my opinion based on my experiences. YRMV Good luck.
  11. Thank you brianz for bringing up this topic and thanks to all the fellas for all the great tips. I'm heading up to Wolseley lodge next week and will put them to work.
  12. Exactly, where I grew up a pickerel is the top picture. How can you call something what it isn't? My truck is a Dodge but who's the moron if you call it a Ford?
