http://www.orilliapacket.com/2012/10/20/angling-duo-does-it-again While the third time's the charm — or so the saying goes — winning the Bass Pro Shops Lake Simcoe open for the fourth time felt pretty good for angling duo Bob Formosa and Jayson Saliba. The pair weighed in with five bass totaling 27.05 pounds to take the $20,000 top prize at the Orillia waterfront Saturday afternoon, forcing Matt Belzil and Jason Clay's 25.65-haul into second place. "It was a surprise," said Saliba, who came all the way from Windsor just for the event. "We figured we needed one more big fish." The one-day tournament, in which participants can count both largemouth and smallmouth bass, isn't usually won on such a low weight, said Formosa, of Mississauga, adding they panicked a little as the 3 p.m. deadline loomed and doubled back to one of their more reliable spots to see if they could reel something in without any luck. In 2010, Mark Moran and Joe Muszynski set a Canadian record at the event when they weighed in with a 31.5 pounds of smallmouth bass. Last year, Brooklin couple Wayne and Gail Misselbrook clinched first place with a 28.5-pound bag of fish. This year, they finished a disappointing 18th with half the weight. "The fish were there, they just didn't seem to want to bite," said Wayne, crediting the three fish they were able to bring to the scale, the largest of which was 6.15 pounds, to Gail. "We relied on last year's spots," he said, adding, "We didn't adjust this year the way we should have." Formosa and Saliba spent the six days leading up to the tournament pre-fishing. "We were looking for areas where the fish were starting to collect," said Formosa, noting Saliba caught a 7.5-pounder Friday. While they managed to hook two 5.95-pounders out on the water Saturday, the prize for biggest fish ultimately went to Derek Strub and Mike Desforges, who caught a 7.75-pound smallmouth. This is the fourth time the 11-year-old event has been held in Orillia. "Lake Simcoe is one of the best lakes in Ontario for catching bass," said Doug Bunker, one of the organizers, noting the catch-and-release tournament has only increased in popularity since arriving, with 59 teams comprised of some of Canada's top anglers weighing in this year. "They can't get enough. They can't believe the fishing is this good," he said. [email protected]

Good point about the inflating ones being life-vests, except the belt ones, most of us have pfds on board. And while I wear my paddling style pfd most of the time I'm in a boat I'm thinking this year I should get an inflatable one. Technically a lifejacket is designed to turn an unconscious person face up, a pfd won't.

Muskies released into Lake Simcoe today
kickingfrog replied to kickingfrog's topic in General Discussion
Yes they will, once the muskie are big enough to thin the herd. -
The local news just had a bit on another release of muskie fingerlings into Lake Simcoe in/near Beverton. Ian Young mentioned that the hope is that in 5-10 years there may be a selfsustaining population. http://www.muskiescanada.ca/news.php?article_id=80

Good point Roy.

Oh oh another convert? Nice fish Terry.

Manual or auto inflate do not count as a flotation device if not worn. Always a good idea to have a traditional pfd for every body onboard. Possibly, but many don't where anything at all.
-
Careful, everyone is going to want one.

Each municipality sets out its own firearm discharge laws. With shotguns, and shot, at 3-4 football fields there is no safety issues. Whether legal or not?
-
Nice! That's some sweet bait too.

Son of a gun Wayne. Something like that should come with a heads-up.

You type like I text.

Since it is only October and I've got the AHL game on in the background.
-
I don't kill them either. If my wife makes a big enough deal about it I'll put it out side. Mostly she'll use a tissue, for the big ones the slipper comes out since I won't kill em. I don't kill them because they mostly eat things that bite me.

The "perfect hunter" can be killed with a tissue.

My brother is in his 30's and has never had a cell phone. I've suggested that he at least have a pay as you go phone for minor emergencies but he has resisted so far.

Ya, that's likely to be structure now.

http://www.cp24.com/news/two-men-rescued-after-boat-sinks-in-lake-ontario-1.1003704#ixzz29rCtkzcq Chris Fox, cp24.com Published Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012 12:12PM EDT Last Updated Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012 12:24PM EDT Two men are lucky to be alive after their boat sank in Lake Ontario Saturday morning. The men were fishing off the coast of Toronto Island’s Gibraltar Point when their 34-foot Bayliner power boat began taking on water at around 10:45 a.m., police say. Recgonizing imminent danger, the men sent out a mayday call over their marine radio and then climbed into a life raft. By the time a rescue boat with the city’s marine unit arrived at the scene 15 minutes later the Bayliner had sunk. “It was gone. There was just a chair and some stuff floating in the water and obviously the raft with two guys inside it who were wet and pretty shaken up,” Const. Danny Phillips told CP24. “If they hadn’t had that dinghy they would have been in rough shape. The water is only eight or nine degrees and it wouldn’t have taken too long for the situation to get pretty grave.” The men were examined by a medical crew once they returned to shore, but were deemed to be unharmed. Police say they will not recover the boat from the bottom of Lake Ontario. Read more: http://www.cp24.com/news/two-men-rescued-after-boat-sinks-in-lake-ontario-1.1003704#ixzz29re5reDH

curious thoughts on this fishes weight..
kickingfrog replied to Toad Hunter's topic in General Discussion
The span of the guy's hand should give some indication as to girth, and length for that matter. That's why I try to hind my hands when taking photos of my "massive" fish. Nice fish. -
which lure is more effective for trout?
kickingfrog replied to 12 Volt Man's topic in General Discussion
Looks like I'm on the band wagon too. Although that doesn't mean I won't use spoons "upriver" or spinners at the mouth. It's more of a general starting point, and I will use plugs in both areas as well. -
Fix it, and $25,000 is yours.
