Advice please on purchasing gas generator.
Old Ironmaker replied to Old Ironmaker's topic in General Discussion
CTC just happens to have gennies on sale this week and saw them today before I saw Dave's post. I blew 300 bananas buying myself B Day presents, hit the big 63, never thought I'd see that number 30 years ago. Best deal today was the Motomaster multi tool at 70% off and the 2 ton car jack at 70% off and the bottle of Crown down the street at 0% off. I am leaning towards the Champion 5500watt for 800 bucks. There is one @ 4500watt with remote start for $600.00. Not a Champion. I think I will go with the 5500w Champion based on Dave's suggestion, more than enough for us now and in the next shack, thanks Big Dave. We are supposed to go across the ditch tomorrow and will look online tonight and see what I can get in the US. It may even be worth spending a night depending on price. I have a few bucks in a US bank account which I bought at par. Anyone know off hand what the Duty Free exemption is now for 24 hours? Google is a friend. 200 CDN 24 hrs, 800 CDN 48 hrs. https://www.crossbordershopping.ca/duty-tax-import-guide/personal-exemptions -
It won't load. Man I want to see it.

I was told not fixable but Terry said yes so I say yes too. How does a transducer come off? When you remount it use 3M-5200. That is as long as you never want to take it off, that stuff is like welding plastic. 4200 if you want to remove something in the future. I mounted mine on a piece of that plastic cutting board from Dollarama. 2 bucks.

Just passing on info for deal for CAA
Old Ironmaker replied to Old Ironmaker's topic in General Discussion
I didn't see it online, the rep told me when I called about joining on my wife's account. Yes a river, can't remember the long name, runs right through town, they call it a city but only have 72,000 living there. The river has Salmon and Trout!!! -
Geoff, we all appreciate your inside info. I sure do. One of the things I love about OFC, many in the know that can share. If anyone wants to know how to get the best Blast Furnace Slag B/A PM me. Who cares right? The Sky Dome was constructed with 100% of the Blast Furnace slag my guys made the formula for as the aggregate for the concrete they used and the other guys produced it. I guaranteed it would not never collapse, and signed off. You never know, the question could come up when you are on Jeopordy.

Yep a Gypsy, we bought this place 21 years ago and we moved in 18 years ago full time. For me that is a lifetime. When I moved out of my house I grew up in at 19. I moved I don't know how many times until I got married the 1st time. We tried to add up all the times I moved since then and can't. Mom and Dad moved 3 times in 64 years. Looked at houses today for 3 hours in Moncton New Brunswick. Avg. prices in Vancouver is 1.44 million, Moncton $177,000.00. We are serious about going there after we both looked at about 50 properties tonight online. Tia's sis has a place in N.S. Close but not too close. We talked about moving at Thanksgiving dinner. Mom said why so far away when we talked? I said you moved 12 hours away from NY City and Dad from Italy? No reply. We are booking a flight to look around for 3 days in Moncton in 2 weeks as Ticha has time off. The prices are ridiculous compared to southern Ont. Waterfront prices here are stupid now. Small cottages waterfront going for 550K. We can buy there and buy a place in southern Italy and put $$ in the bank. Who wants to join us? Great fishing too!!! 3 bed, 2 bath, 2 car garage, new build, good finishes, hardwood and ceramic floors, 1800 ftsq. $269,000.00 COME ON MAN. -
I made an outdoor patio set with White Oak 30 years ago. Not a crack or check. Every 8 years or so I give it a swipe of Tung oil. Looks like new today.

I have been asking locals as well today, it looks like the Hondas, Yammys and NG's Gentec (sic) are the best but big bucks. I don't know if I want to spend the extra $$ since we plan on relocating next spring to civilization. A portable entry level (cheaper not cheap) gas portable unit is all I am looking for. Princess Auto has a few, anyone have one? -
Geoff, the day I don't buy a home because it doesn't meet my multi media needs is the day I run my noggin into a brick wall to give it a shake. Is connectivity that important today? I hope not, but can understand it is very important to many. I especially get it if working from home or remote from the office.

I don't use them but think I should. Years back my former Bro in law took up fishing after he retired at 65. He had not owned a rod and reel since he was 12 or something. He comes over and shows me these pics of big, I mean big, Largies and Northerns, even a small Musky, by mistake. Who caught them I ask? "I did." No way Jose. He told me about Senko's whacky rigged, he's whacky rigged. I had never heard of them. If that duffus can catch monster fish on them they should be illegal. He actually is a good guy, wait, wrong brother in law, he's a duffus. Only kidding Wayne. Forgot he's here on OFC, ooops.

Yes Woodsmen forgot that. But my shallow well pump is 110, I know that because there is a switch that selects 110 or 220, maybe 115 and mine is 110 for sure. Learned about that 21 years ago. I thought water just happened when you turn on the tap, citiots for the 1st 45 years, still am according to my rural pals I should be good there, we have a electrician nephew that loves fishing. Ketchin, Fratello mio, I hope I never have to use it. Contingencies are good but you never want to have to use them. But as soon as I forget to put my trailer jack in the truck I get a flat on the boat trailer, for sure. Already good advice, 3 replies in 10 minutes. -

Yes I did that as well Sinker. It was an additional 30 a year, again a no brainer. I have been stuck with a flat a few times and it wasn't fun. I made sure the rep. understood a trailer "with" a boat on it, not just a trailer. -
I have never owned a generator, used a generator or seen one used. We are in the market because my wife says so, she's much more intelligent and practical than I. Calling for a brutal winter and power outages here because of conditions are a regular occurrence. Luckily we have NG and if power goes out the fireplace comes on automatically and we can cook too. I'm getting too old to haul water and everything that goes with a power outage. I'm not looking for the top of the line NG whole house generator like my neighbours have. A basic unit, electric start would be very nice. Brand names like Honda don't sway my buying habits, most like many consumer goods today they have short shelf lives. Even in the days gone by I have had high end luxury European cars (Benz, BMW, Audi, Alpha Romeo amongst them that fell apart and rotted before a Chevy would. 1) We need to power the NG forced air furnace. I will need to look at what powers the thermostat and be sure it gets juice too. 2) The combo fridge freezer needs power. 3) A few curcuits of 110 for lights, etc. That's all I think we need. What do you have that meets my needs and what do I expect to pay for something like this? I have never priced these things. I would like to have something that can be portable, plug in an exterior wall to feed the breaker panel. How does that work? Going in blind here. Thanks ahead of time. The group of people we have here have so much experience in so many areas besides fishing it is my go to source for good solid advice I can believe and trust. Not like many forums out there where people actually get a kick out of giving "bad" advice as "good".

A strip of Ice and Snow used for roofing can replace a rubber gasket for Marine applications. It is economical and has adhesive on it. Easy to use and cheap to buy.

Not just Dad's husbands too Dan. She doesn't even deny full throttle take offs as I am sitting in the seat right next to her. She says she loves the smell of rubber in the morning. Nissans 300 HP 3.8L in a mid size family sedan Altima, crazy, my 78' Vett didn't have 300 horse. Dan I certainly won't tell her but how do we get the other 60% of available power out of our vehicles? I shook my head the other day when we were car shopping. Tia asks the sales guy, " How many horse are we talking and what foot pounds torque?" Danica Patrick has nothing on her.

If necessary may be too late.

I am not on my wife's CAA account because I am covered by GM until 175,000 KM on my truck. I want to join as I will be primarily driving her Nissan that has 330,000 KM on it now. CAA has a promo until Oct.31st for 50% off for associates added to any membership, with her package only $42.00 more me for me a year. A no brainer for me. Just thinking, I wonder if she can add anyone else she wants to for 42 bucks? How would they know that driver isn't at the same address? Kind of like 6 people sharing the same Sat. TV at different residences. I have never been asked to show the CAA card by the driver when I had to use it a few times.

Thanks for all the input all. If I wasn't confused before (a regular daily thing) I am now. It looks like we are paying the going rate for what we are getting. If I bundle with phone and internet I could save some money but swore we would never go with Bell internet again after receiving a bill for $1800.00 for a Demon Dialer charging LD rates from Sao Tome Africa getting into our landline about 16 years ago. Long story that was covered by The Hamilton Spectator and CBC news at the time. We weren't the only victims. The plan is to relocate this coming spring so we will just stay with what we have for now and then reassess after we move. 1100 channels available and nothing on TV. I don't miss the days of having channels 1 through 13, and only 8 or so that was clear enough to watch, or do I?

What do I expect to pay for the HD antenna? Is it true HD at 1080p? Can you get HBO on the antenna? I have been told no HBO, movie channels as well as most cable channels such as CNN, Nat Geo etc. My wife is leaving if she looses HBO and her cable movie channels. I'm thinking I might get a base package then add on some cable channels and supplement the networks with the antenna, ABC,CBS, NBC, FOX, CBC and CTV. I need to get the calculator out. Not able to stream here, not enough band width.

A very good read and very nice pics there Tupelo. I have saved a few in my "to paint someday" file. It sounds like a great time. My ex in laws had a beautiful place on Nipping's south shore. The entire family would head up for the holiday and my Brother-in-law would spend a few more days fishing then close the cottage until January for ice fishing. Great times and your trip brings back fond memories, thanks again, well done.

Maybe. But if it was you weren't the only person that told me, a news segment on CHCH Channel 11 featured fishing Walleye in the bay.
