  1. Nice report and pics, I'll have to take my canoe up and give Lovesick Lake a shot.
  2. Great report and pictures. Your description of the hook episode was clear enough to not require photos
  3. Hey Clamp-it, it is a shame that so many small minded people make it to management without a clue how to manage. It wouldn't hurt to see a Doctor and have a note in your back pocket (in case it is needed) but don't sweat it, guys like this come and go. Do the best you can when you're well enough..
  4. Don't quote me on it but I understand 30 feet per colour change and 10 feet depth per colour. So 7 colours into it you would be 210 feet of line out, 70 feet down. I'm sure this is based on a set speed and would vary... Hey scuro, I'll certainly let you know when I get a chance to get out again. I'm thinking next weekend or the long weekend at the latest. I have a small, deep lake in mind that I want to try again. I like your tip on the two strong strokes then let the canoe slow right down. This should greatly extend the vertical range of the spoon. Cheers, Barn
  5. Hey scuro, your story helped rejuvenate my quest to catch a Laker in my canoe. I've got portable manual downriggers and a depth finder but have not had luck on a couple trips out. Just came back from the McConnell Lakes area (north of North Bay) but did not stray from the easier targets (Bass, Pike, Pickeral, and Perch). Was talking to an old-timer familiar with one of the better Laker lakes up there and he told me the fishing had been off the last week or so - so I didn't bother putting in the time. Guess I'll have to give it another shot a little later in the season. Thanks for the inspiration. Barn
  6. That videi was enough to kill my appetite, glad I'm not having fish tonight!
  7. Nice looking fish guys WTG.
  8. bassmaster4 my experience with Whitefish is jigging with small Williams Wablers (Gold and Silver nu-wrinkle finish) at Whitefish Shoal in Simcoe. I have heard from some that it is popular use a Rapala Jigging Shad Rap while anchored over known Whitefish locations. Can't vouch for this as I have not tried it myself. Good luck.
  9. Hi Need2Fish, Love the doubleheader story! I've never encountered it but just wanted to respond that the Big "O" in white is my wifes favourite lure and colour. She has caught many LARGE Smallmouth with it. I going to tell her however that she is not using it right and that she may wish to talk to your son Cheers...
  10. Left home around 5:30AM and was on the water by 6. The launch at Bluffers Park was very busy and the lake very calm. From the water we could see how dark the sky was over Durham region. It was spitting on us for a minute or so. Later we get reports of a downpour for about 10 minutes (back home). Got the lines in the water and started fishing in about 90 feet - ended up around 240. Lines were spread out from 35 to 75 feet, using mostly RAC spoons and 1 Spin Doctor. I heard the week had been hard fishing so expectations were low. The surface temps were around 67 ddegrees, almost 20 more than the last time out for me. Over the next 4 hours a definite pattern emerged. No it wasn't colour, depth or speed. It was a fish on everytime we engaged someone on the radio to listen to them complain about how hard the fishing was!! We had what I considered to be a great day out going 4 for 4 (3 rainbow and 1 salmon). Nothing huge but just great to be out on the water. All fish were released except one rainbow that didn't want to go back down. Here are shots of the two I landed (my buddy can post his own pictures Skinny Rainbow Small Chinook Pictures taken with a 5 megapixel camera phone - hope the results are ok. Thanks for reading and if anyone has suggestions on how to catch trout in Northern Ontario lakes (from a canoe) I'm all ears. Cheers, Barn
  11. Latest flyer from BassPro Shops has the Garmin eTrex Legend Cx on for $199 until August 19th. This unit provides 32 hours of use on 2 x AA batteries, comes with 64MB microSD card and mini USB cable. Hands down a better buy than the 500LE. I'll be getting a back-up unit next week when I pass by on holidays. Cheers, Barn
  12. It was on last week at Crappy Tire for $199. The unit should be okay - but remember you real costs come in any additional detailed maps that you want. As for technology, this device supports microSD memory which is good but only delivers 17 hours on 2xAAA batteries. Not enough time on costly batteries. Check out the Garmin line of eTrex GPS. You'll pay a little more for a unit similar to the 500LE but will get 30 hours on 2xAA batteries.
  13. Hi ribak, are you sure you are describing Silent Lake PP? I'm not aware of any spot that goes under the road (unless you are going into Paudash Lake) and also a little surprised about Pike in Silent and Paudash.
  14. Can we use it to chum for Carp??
  15. The humming is normal and I hear it while downrigging in my canoe. The tune is so subtle that I don't hear it at all when downrigging from a boat (over the kicker).
  16. bump....really looking for some help, anyone?
  17. WTG - nice fish We had great action on topwater a couple weeks back - nothing beats the surface explosion!
  18. Hey irishfield, buddy of mine just got a "new to him" Lund and it does all the things you describe (couldn't be happier with the comfort and handling) - problem is all the mounting hardware keeps coming loose. Never experienced this in previous boats, is this one of your problems as well?
  19. I take my chances when trolling and don't bother with a leader. Only time I get bit off is when using topwater baits in Pike infested waters. Guess I'll start using flouro leaders in these situations.
  20. I'll be increasing the size of my bait now
  21. Well said Hookset, now speaking of "hooksets" the trend is now setting a hook that would lift a whale out of the water!
  22. Deepest sympathies go out to you and I'm sure Cocoa thanks you for the strength to make the decision when you did. Toughest thing for the guardian of "man's best friend" to make.
  23. Hi Everyone, The significant other was the first female junior ranger many, many years ago and now wants to revisit the area she worked (McConnell Lake). We are planning a trip up there the second week of August and was looking for suggestions on good fishing lakes in the area. We'll be fishing out of a canoe and know that the area support a variety of trout, walleye, bass and pike. Our campsite will be at one of Boland Lake, Blue Lake or Little McDougal Lake. Any suggestions anyone can offer as to what to find/where/techniques (have no trout experience from a canoe - but do have portable downriggers) would be greatly appreciated. Suggestions on nearby lakes to try would also be appreciated. Cheers, Barn
