I got a couple of 14 foot boats the previous owner was going to junk and repaired them. I registered them with Canada customs and about 2 years later I got a note from the Ontario government asking me if I paid the sales tax on them. Tell your friend that he can expect something asking him the same question. In my case I didn't have to pay sales tax since I got the previous owner to sign a letter stating that no money was exchanged for these boats. However, the province sales tax people kept hounding me for money and it took another 2 years of corresponding back and forth with copies of this letter included in each correspondance to convince the province that all was on the up and up.

This is kind of interesting topic, since I was looking at getting one of these rods, now I think I'll keep looking.

If the boat is 16 feet, and floats, it's worth $1000, The motor if it a 1999 it's probably worth 800-1000 and the trailer is worth 700. So if you can get it for 2300 or less, go for it. I paid, 3years ago, 1000 for a 1990 16 foot lund and 1200 for a 2003 20 hp merc motor with no trailer, so your neighbour seems to be in the ballpark.

I saw the show this morning, as a kid in Brantford the only time we saw cats that big was when we went to the fishponds in Mount Pleasant. I only ever caught small 10-15 inch cats at the dam in Brantford. I always wanted to nail the ones like you caught on the show.

I'm supposed to be heading to North Bay for a conference next week, and I'm curious as to what your weather report is for the week. How much snow do you have as this will determine what kind of clothes and footwear to pack?

I ordered one of these 2 weeks ago. BUT, they cannot ship them into Canada, so I had to have mine shiipped to a friend that has the camp next door to bring with him when he comes in the spring. I hope you have someone that can do the same for you..

My insurance company only has a requirement the boat I have doesn't go above 50 mph. If I had put the max rating for my boat on it (it is rated for 175 hp) I would have been above the speed allowed. Maybe you should check your policy to see if there is a speed requirement. I can do about 45 mph with the 150 I have on the boat. However, let me qualify the insurance by saying this is not my household insurance policy since they wanted $300 more than the boat insurance company I found to insure me.

One of my fishing buddies sold his Honda 10hp (an older blue colored version) for $400 and thought he got a good deal so I would suggest if you pay over $500 for these it is a BAD deal

The ugliness of sharing the spot doesn't end with fishing, I saw a news item on CBC from Winnipeg where, in the fall there is a road just outside the protected goose area and the hunters were shoulder to shoulder. With the tv cameras rolling a goose came over and 2 guys stood up and shot, the goose dropped and both claimed the goose. In the end, one guy walked up to the goose on the ground, emptied his shotgun into it , turned to the other guy and said "yup, I guess it's yours".

I clicked on the ad for stanleys resort on the opening page of this site. When it came up I noticed a picture of several people holding up a string of fish. In the back ground of this picture is the cottage (up here we call them camps) where we go each opening weekend for walleye, and several times during the summer for good times. The fellow on the left side of the picture has the corner of the cabin behind him and the other red buildings are the boat house and sauna. It's a beauty of a lake to visit, but the fishing sucks on the opening weekend. Thank goodness for good friends and beer and other libations. There are usually 8 to 10 of us that meet there and we call ourselves the Eagle Lake Hookers Club. Opening weekend is our annual convention, filled with card games, an awards night for various actions over the past year (be they good or bad) and lots of fishing stories (some lies may work their way into these). Each year our membership seems to get smaller and this year is no exception, so we remember those who are no longer among us (usually by way of a toast sometimes many toasts) and stories of how good the missing member was. Ok sometimes it was how bad the missing member was too. It is the promise of this meeting that keeps us going through the long cold winter nights up here.

I'm running 2 transducers for depth finder (lowrance) one is a universal trolling motor transducer and one is on the transom. I alternate the depth finder screen by way of a switch that allows me to switch out one transducer. That way I can use the back when under way and then switch to the trolling motor when I shut down on my fishing spot. I have a 3rd transducer that feeds the hummingbird depth finder that my wife uses in the back. If I have the lowrance set to use the rear transducer and the hummingbird is also on the frequencies interfere with each other and wipe out the signal. So I always turn of the hummingbird when under way.

I just called the company that makes the maps for the Red Lake area. They produce a map of Birch Lake that has the depths on it. They can be reached at [email protected] He said to send him an email and they can get you a map by mail.

It can't be spring yet! My soft water still has 3 feet of hard stuff on top of it.

don't let those toronto guys scare you that is a great time of the year up here in the northwest. the only time when the bugs are bad is when the sun goes down and the mosquitos come to dine. the weather will be warm and sunny, highs of 25 to 30 and lows of 10 to 15. the fish will be biting and all will be well with the world (at least the part you'll be in for the time you're there) have a positive attitude and what can go wrong. and leave your long johns at home.

the very first depth finder I got was an eagle portable with the suction cup holder and it stayed wherever I put it even when running wide open on a 16 foot boat with an 85 hp motor. dont be worried about the hold of the cup, they are big enough to really attach themselves to the transom.

although I voted that I dumped them in the lake, it was the closest thing to what I do, because I keep them in my minnow bucket for use the next day when I return to my fishing adventures. Maybe there should be a selection that allows for keeping them alive for future use.

you got to be careful in a Jon boat. We used to duck hunt in a 14 foot Jon boat and it was very tippy. I really can't imagine one with a casting deck being very stable.

How did you hold the camera steady while jigging for those walleye?

We've had snow on the ground here since the 2nd week of October, it is -20 currently and I don't believe the groundhogs know diddly about weather forcasting. Cant wait for spring and open water.

you might want to google Stormer Lake Lodge. I guide for them in the busy periods when they need extra help and they only hire college students or recent grads . the lodge is 75 miles northof Red Lake and it is a first class operation. they have 17 foot Lund outfitters with 40 hp hondas. good boats, great lake to fish on and the pay is reasonable. you won't get rich but if you are good with customers, the tips are good. As for fishing while guiding. You have to be able to find the fish for the customers and the only way I know of doing this is by having a line in the water. Weather and wind determine where the fish will be and you could be in the wrong spot if you don't sample what's below the boat.
