  1. I picked up 2 cans in Gimli at canadian tire for 10.95 (this is what the price was in dryden when I got it last). then the other day I checked at the dryden canadian tire and like Limeyangler say it is now $15.95.
  2. with a few name changes in the poem I could make it apply to our group in the spring. Thanks for finding it and sharing
  3. I got a maxxum 72 pound thrust with a 60" shaft that I wanted $325. for it and a local guy in Sioux Lookout offered me $200, but for that price I'll keep it as a back up incase the new motor I bought gives up the ghost. So I think $250 to $300 is a fair price.
  4. If you read the article it says the fax machine was stolen from a MILITARY truck, obviously the theft of the beer was just to throw the cops off the real target, the fax. it was probably one of our militarys top secret weapons and had great monetary value on the black market, but having just spent 3 days in dryden, waiting out the snow storm courtesy of an alberta clipper, it would have to be a white market.
  5. The tax bills sent out by the Province for the unorganized areas had due dates of Dec 3 for the first installment and Dec 31 for the final installment. After considerable pressure from the ratepayers and members of parliament the dates have now beenchanged , the first installment is due Jan 31 and the final installment is due Feb 28. Just thought there might be someone out there that was as po'd as I was since I got the bill on Dec 2.
  6. i haven't fished for rainbows but up here the guys use floating jigs for the walleyes. there is an area that i tried fishing years ago where i couldn't buy a fish, then i tied on a floating jig with a 2 foot leader behind a trolling weight and started nailing them, both minnows and leeches work well on these rigs, never tried it with a worm
  7. A guy goes into a bar and there is a robot bartender. The robot says, "What will you have ?" The guy says "Martini." The robot brings back the best martini ever and says to the man, "What's your IQ?" The guy says, "168." The robot then proceeds to talk about physics, space exploration and medical technology. The guy leaves, but he is curious, so he goes back into the bar. The robot bartender says, "What will you have?" The guy says, "Martini". Again, the robot makes a great martini, gives it to the man and says, "What's your IQ?" The guy says, "100." The robot then starts to talk about Nascar, Budweiser and John Deere tractors. The guy leaves, but finds it very interesting, so he thinks he will try it one more time. He goes back into the bar. The robot says, "What will you have?" The guy says, "Martini", and the robot brings him another great martini. The robot then says, "What's your IQ?" The guy says, "Uh, about 50." The robot leans in real close and says, "So... you gonna cheer for the Alouettes this year?"
  8. if you do it for yourself using your own boat you would be wise to check your boat insurance coverage. mine doesn't cover me if I use it for a commercial purpose. what i do is make arrangements with the tourist camps in the area to give me a call when someone wants a guide and i use the camp boat, gas and bait. I tell the guests that if they want a shore lunch, bring a sandwich as i don't cook for them. (have heard of too many stories of guests whining about the quality of the cooked meal) . I know the guides in the Vermilion Bay area are getting $200 a day and someof the camps around here that have guides are charging $150 per day, but I charge $100 since I really have no costs and what the heck, it's a day of fishing without having the wife complain about me doing it.
  9. I still have a mitchell 300 that my uncle Charlie left me with his fishing tackle, When I bought my first reel, it was the 300. I spent a lot of time at the Grand River using it and I thought it would change fishing forever. I used to have an old level wind Shakespear reel that my aunt made when she worked at the outfit that made them, I remember pulling yards of black line off it and whipping it like a lasso around my head and heaving the line out for my cast. How the spinning reel changed all that is amazing.
  10. I want to thank everyone who answered this post. I took into consideration everything you guys said and ended up getting a yamaha 450 eps (with a winch and snow plow and 2 years extended warranty thrown in) from the dealer in Ear Falls . now all I have to do is wait for the snow to fly. by the way, i got a call from the polsris dealer today and he was going to sell me the polaris for 1100 more than i paid for the yamaha. he was going to charge me for the plow and winch. I guess it pays to shop around, even in the smaller markets.
  11. I went to dryden yesterday and talked myself into getting a quad, so today I looked around town here and am looking at a polaris as it is in my price range and can be handled by my wife but i would like some input from the members who have them to see if I should go the polaris way. Any comments would be appreciate it
  12. I can't remember how I found the site but in the 2 or 3 years I have been on it I realized it is the best fishing site for the Ontario angler and I'm impressed with all the crap the members throw at each other and still remain friends, it sure goes to show that you have to be able to laugh at yourself every now and then. Even though I'm living at the end of the road (almost) in the northwest I know there is a camaraderie with the members and several members over the years have gone above and beyond to help out fellow members in need. this is truly a caring board. I still haven't met anyone from the board (DanC you should have called) but one day when I get some time I hope to make it to Lakeair and meet the gang at the get together.
  13. yes this motor has the us2 connector but I just installed a humminbird 797 on the front of the boat and have the transducer on the motor housing on the maxxum, so with the side scan, I don't know if the universal sonar will work with this feature, so i'm looking at just switching the transducer to the housing on the terrova.
  14. When I was fishing the Red Lake fall classic this past Labour Day I was having problems with the maxxum motor I have on the bow of the boat, It kept cutting in and out, when I moved my foot on the pedal to a certain spot , it would work, move it to another spot and no way would it go, just really made the operation frustrating. I noticed that several others were using the terrova's on their boats and after talking to them , they all loved the terrova, I thought I'd get one in the spring. Doing my home work, I found out that the 80# 60" 24v terrova with i-pilot would cost $1300 if it had the universal sonar and $1200 if it didn't. (this was on the cabela's website) Checking the cabela's website for canada there was a great discrepancy in their price. they wanted $300 more than the US prices. On monday I was in Winnipeg and I went to a little tackle shop ,that I always go to when the wife is shopping for clothes, and he had a terrova 24v 80# 60" for $1500, he caught me at a moment of weakness and I bought it. Then to top it off he suggested I ship it home on the bus and save the provincial sales tax, (that cost me $38) so I got the motor yesterday and found out it also had the universal sonar. So today, between the rain I'm going to put it on the boat and hopefully go out and try it out.
  15. So i got the oil tank changed, sent the insurance broker a picture of the new tank, a copy of the inspections certificate and they responded that once it was submitted to the insurance company they would notify me IF they get a renewal offer from the insurance company. Today they sent me a copy of the invoice for the renewal, it went up $300 . I guess they really like to kick you when you're down. Sure wish the government would step in and regulate these bandits
  16. Just want to put in a plug for Sioux Narrows- Nestor Falls on beautiful Lake of the Woods.
  17. i don't know how this would work at the red lake fall classic with 140 teams, we would have a heck of a time getting 140 "officials" for the boats. It would work great in smaller tournaments.
  18. This morning I got a call from my insurance broker. My house insurance is up for renewal and a few weeks ago the insurance company notified the broker that since I have an oil furnace they would require a picture of my oil tank and I would have to fill in a questionaire. So being a good guy I sent a few pictures of the tank, a copy of the inspection certificate for the oil tank and a copy of the inspection certificate for the furnace. Today the broker tells me that in order for my insurance to be renewed I will have to replace my oil tank and get one that has a sticker that says it has been approved by the underwriters labratories. The oil companies tried to get a lot of people in our area to change their tanks a few years ago and when I checked with my member of parliament on the legislation that made this a requirement, he told me that only oil tanks that were installed after the legislation was passed would require this sticker. When I told this to the broker, she said she'd get back to me after checking with the insurance company since i felt the insurance companies were breaking the law by forcing an unneccessary expense. I checked with my member of parliament today and he told me that it was a Provincial issue and to talk to my provincial member of parliament. I did and they are checking into it. The company that changes the tanks said the cost to replace my oil tank will be $2500 plus tax. They also said they have been flooded with calls to replace tanks because the insurance companies are forcing the issue. Has anyone else out there been given the same ultimatum?
  19. HELGA'S DIARY ON A CRUISE SHIP DEAR DIARY - DAY 1 All packed for the cruise ship -- all my nicest dresses, swimsuits, short sets. Really, really exciting. Our local Red Hat chapter decided on this "all-girls" trip. It will be my first one, - and I can't wait! -------------------------------------------------------------- DEAR DIARY - DAY 2 Entire day at sea, beautiful. Saw whales and dolphins. Met the Captain today -- seems like a very nice man. -------------------------------------------------------------- DEAR DIARY - DAY 3 At the pool today. Did some shuffleboard, hit golf balls off the deck. Captain invited me to join him at his table for dinner. Felt honored and had a wonderful time. He is very attractive and attentive. ---------------------------------------------------------- DEAR DIARY - DAY 4 Won $800.00 in the ship's casino. Captain asked me to have dinner with him in his own cabin. Had a scrumptious meal complete with caviar and champagne. He asked me to stay the night, but I declined. Told him I could not be unfaithful to my husband. -------------------------------------------------------------- DEAR DIARY - DAY 5 Pool again today. Got sunburned, and I went inside to drink at piano-bar, stayed there for rest of day. Captain saw me, bought me several large drinks. Really is quite charming. Again asked me to visit his cabin for the night. Again I declined. He told me, if I did not let him have his way with me, he would sink the ship... I was shocked. -------------------------------------------------------------- DEAR DIARY - DAY 6 Today I saved 1600 lives. Twice.
  20. Gullrock Tackle and ME
  21. My buddy Ron and I will be 1 of the 140 teams in the Red Lake Fall Classic, a catch and release walleye tournament.
  22. kinda makes me glad that I live in the north and far far away from the toll roads
  23. the yellow plane is a dehavilland Otter, has a passenger abiltiy of 9 people and gear. the silver plane is a beechcraft 18 . it is another workhorse in our area. some pilots swear by it's great ability to fly but others have told me that even though it has 2 engines, if 1 quits, you are in serious trouble as they don't turn well on 1 engine.
  24. spent 30 years at Bell then 2 years of semi retirement just cutting grass at the local golf course during the summers but went on to join the working class again and am into year 14 at theOPP detachment in Red Lake as a baby sitter in the local lockup. good money (better than my Bell pension) and I get as many days off as I want.
  25. next time, try and get a large rock between you and the shore and enjoy the cursing when they hit it when I troll, which is always, I go around the outside of the boats in the area, who knows, maybe the fish are deeper out farther, in any case a detour of thirty to fifty feet isn't going to cause you to miss too many fish
