Ya this one has the level wind. I do like what Lew was saying about the big reel for trolling. If this 400 replaces my Record that got lost as a casting or trolling reel(they seem comparable), then I could grab the 700 as well and use it strictly for trolling...the right tool for the right job you might say. I'm looking to add 1 more to the fold, maybe grab the 700 too...although the revo toro winch is an interesting option as well. So the last addition will be the 700 or the toro..then I'm done (so I told my wife)

Its a 4.7 gear ratio, would that help? Need to get me one of those clown-sized handles for it!

bought a calcutta 400 off kijiji last night. Not a 400B or D or TE just a plain old 400. It was never used still in the box guy told me maybe 6 years old? Hopefully it is comparable with the B, maybe it was the original before they started with all these other styles

haha ya that is not how mine ended up in the drink...did a post on it a week or so ago. Long story short my fishing partner hooked it with his rod and launched it into the lake. It sank before we could retrieve it

ya I have a hard time trolling for too long. Even my one time out to St Clair I did quite a bit of casting. Although if I do buy this reel it would force me to sit on my butt and troll a bit longer!

Looking to replace my Abu Record that got launched into the lake last week. Any thoughts on this reel? I am looking for something that would be suitable for both trolling and casting, as I split my time between the two. Thanks for any input.

always treated well by CT in Barrie. Had a trailer tire for years as a spare before I noticed it was wrong bolt configuration. Brought it back to CT and they let me exchange it for the proper one. Hey kickingfrog...thats why that spare I gave you looks so new!

nope no marker buoy nothing. We were only going out for an hour or two on the first day of arrival. It was starting to get late, so we drove out to a weed bed we knew in 10 fow (no gps required) and started casting. when I'm familiar with a spot I like to shut off all my electronics, and drift with the wind if possible...stealth mode I call it. So we couldn't really mark the spot, and with all the weeds we figured pretty much impossible to get a big lure in there to snag it.

I have heard the same...West Bay. Having said that, I have caught several in south bay while musky fishing

...and worst of all, forgot to mention this part, besides our rough first night the fishing wasn't great for the rest of the week either. Water was up in the mid 80's for a few of the days, but probably averaged around 82. Better for the fish that we didn't catch too many, mortality might have been an issue.

Lew if your lure was dangling over the side it may have hooked some heavy weed (milfoil?) and dragged the whole thing right over. Glad you got yours back. I dove in clothes and all and came up with nothing.

I told him about 3 times in the 20-30 seconds we had "Jump in...thats about $400 in rod/reel" but he thought he could snag it. He now regrets that decision (because he has agreed to replace it). As far as getting it back...the gps was off at that time so we couldn't mark it, and it was 10 feet of water where the last 4 feet were weeds so would have been pretty tough to either find visually or by dragging a bulldawg

Spent last week at Pigeon Lake, and managed to get out fishing a few hours each day. Well don't you know on the first evening we are there, my partner manages to hook my Compre/Record Combo which was up front with me on the far side of the windshield (he was on the back casting deck of a 16.5 foot boat) and tosses it overboard. It only went out around 10 feet or so, but the wind was pushing us away from it. I suggested he dive in and grab it but he felt he could hook it. After about 20 seconds it was starting to sink and was now 15 to 20 feet away. With him not diving in, I made the decision to go in after it. By the time I swam out to it she was gone, and since we were in 10 feet of water and low visibility there was no chance of finding it. Long story short, if a rod goes overboard, and if you don't hook it in the first couple of seconds better jump in cause she's going down!

with the cannon ones can you angle a rod practically straight down into the water or is it the tube style rod holder where the rod just slides out?

...uh oh. I have a cleat at one end and then the cap from the back corner at the other end (although that is not much of an obstruction I guess)

ok definitely not room for 24, but 17 or 18 might work depending on how the risers fit into the track. If they slide in from the side I am gonna have trouble because there are obstructions at both ends. If they drop in from above I am fine. Can anyone describe to me how these things work? Thanks
