Go to Fleming, take the common first semester. It will introduce you to all the courses they offer. It may make your final decision easier once you actually see what the other programs have to offer.....they're all top notch!! Sinker

I fished quinte today. All our fish came off the williams half 'n half. Both sizes, with side hooks removed. For eyes, I take the side hooks off,and replace the treble with a bigger, red one. For whities, I like those side hooks nice and tight to the lure, and razor sharp. Its gotta be sticky sharp, or you'll miss a lot of hits. Sinker

The celestial sounds like an interesting course for sure. I know my grandfather does a lot of navigation this way.....and landmarks when he can see shore. Its a different game once you get into the high seas.... I'm going to call and ask about these courses. I've always wanted to do something like this, and I'm sure its a great experience at the very least. Thanks for the heads up! Sinker

That's the one. The only lure any icefisher needs. I use them for everything that swims under the ice. Sinker

The terrain and water program is now called Environmental Technology. Basically, its everything you need to know about water. I graduated from the 3 year program in April '08. I'd take it over F&W just because there are more jobs in this field that are closer to home.......ie: in ontario. All the programs are competitive. You have to work at anything, if you want to do well. I was lucky, I had years of work experience before I went back to college, a solid resume, and I'm also a huge fish and wildlife nut. I landed a full time permanent job right out of school, that's 12km door to door. Going back was my best decision yet!! Sinker

Just got in from Big Bay. We took machines out, no problem. About 8" of good black ice. 3 of us got 2 eyes (3-4lbs), lost a couple, and had 2 break offs. It was friggen cold with that wind!! All the fish we caught were on williams half and half ice jigs tipped with minnows. Good luck!! Sinker

The williams is designed to imitate a minnow, feeding off bottom. Just picture a minnow, feeding on bottom, and make the spoon do it. I just jig it with short jigs (~6"), but pretty quick usually, with a pause here and there. As soon as my line goes tight, I'm lifting it again. Jig it in your hole, and see what looks the most like a feeding minnow to you..... I'm only talking whities here.....for eyes/lakers I usually giever a good lift. Sinker

I turn up the ping speed on mine too. I also use split screen, the bottom 10 ft, and the whole water column. Just be careful how close you get to guys with other units. A flasher will mess you up fer sure!! Sinker

Well, that's the impression I get from reading the course outline on the website. There's gotta be more to it, no? I wouldn't mind taking a course if I'm actually going to learn something new. The boaters license is a joke IMO. Is the boaters license considered a pre requisite for a more advanced course? I should just call I guess. Sinker

They are for when a whitie picks up your spoon off bottom, sideways. Sinker

The descriptions on the site are a little vague. Do we actually get to operate a vessel of any sorts? This isn't just a more complex version of the pleasure craft operators license is it? Which course would you reccomend? Sinker

I use those tiny micro sized 3 way swivels. Then attach your snells to them. The dropper loop will do the trick too, then attach snells. I like the swivels though, less tangles, and I don't think the fish care. Sinker

I'm thinkin, Im going to do that in the morning......looks like fun! Thanks for the report! Sinker

I heard they were selling minnows at the general store on the island. Its on Island rd, just north of stephensons point rd, on the west side. I don't know first hand whether they have them or not, I just heard it somewhere. I get mine at causeway bait and tackle. Just west of island rd, on the south side of 7a. They're pricey, but they always have bait. Sinker

I also use 30lb.....trilene big game. Sinker

Cheers!! -
That's why you need mitts that you can just shake off quick. Set the hook, and shake your reel mitt off. To be honest, 99% of the time, I'm wearing hand knit wool mitts. Ask anyone who's fished with me. If my hands aren't bare, I've got my newfie mitts on. The ones with the trigger finger! They have to be pure wool, right off the sheeps back!! Sinker

A New Category is Needed for OFN Community

If your going to make a new section, it should just be called fishing reports. Only reports (with pics ) allowed. I kinda like it the way it is, but a reports section would be a welcomed new addition. Sinker -

I'm not sure about the salt water regs......its all changed since I was there last. When I lived there, there were NO regs on the saltwater shorefishing. Fresh water is brookies only.......pretty much. I think the season opens mid jan for icefishing. In the harbour, get some fresh chicken liver, put it on a hook, with some weight, and wait for something to bite. Usually, the first fish you catch is used for bait. Talk to the locals....they'll tell ya everything you need to know. Very friendly people, always willing to help. Sinker
