ChromeChaser Posted December 18, 2025 Report Posted December 18, 2025 Hi all - I am planning on targeting crappie for the first time through the ice on Bobs lake this year and am wondering if anyone has some suggestions on types of structure to target and a general area on the lake that would be worth while. Don't need anyone's specific spots just looking for some general advice on how to approach the lake.
CrowMan Posted December 18, 2025 Report Posted December 18, 2025 (edited) Sent you a dm. Don't go too soon...as of this afternoon the main basins still had open water. Edited December 18, 2025 by CrowMan
ChromeChaser Posted December 18, 2025 Author Report Posted December 18, 2025 Thanks for the reply I will definitely hold off for a bit until the lake freezes up completely. 1

I still have the ones you sent me in my arsenal, they are killer when the fish go dormant/neutral/finicky, I just wish they were heavier, as the crappie here are usually 18’ to 33’ feet deep and don’t respond the same if I add weights or double jigs. I'm curious, why do you think that is? My first thought would be the action of the jig but maybe they're spooked by the weight or extra jig. Have you considered getting the exact same jig but next size heavier like from 1/16 to 1/8?

I have the heavy hitters that are 1/4 " . These sink very fast .

I think it’s the weight spooks them and changes the action…especially when they’re being fussy already.

AKRISONER Posted December 23, 2025 Report Posted December 23, 2025 (edited) hopefully youre planning on fishing with a flasher, or even better scope? Crappies moreso than almost any other fish i target through the ice need electronics. Once you get on them though, its a really really fun time. Find a mud bottom basin, somewhere that you feel is a big flat in 20-35 fow, look for the suspended schools and keep your bait above em. I love the tiny buckshot spoons tipped with a minnow head. Been a few years since ive fished craps...i miss it Edited December 23, 2025 by AKRISONER
