Hi all,

had a bit more time today and my neighbour and me took the longer trek down the lake to a good crappie hole.

Fishing was decent and we got a couple of nice walleye too.

Awesome.  I used to love crappie fishing. They're tough to find consistently in southern Ontario now..

There are a number of lakes in south-eastern Ontario where Crappie are quite prolific..

Yeah, that area is pretty good as well.. all my spots around the Hamilton area have been fished out or the population has crashed.

Populations are definitely cyclical, especially in smaller bodies of water. Back in the day, I used to do well at Binbrook and Mountsburg...then nothing. Not sure if they ever bounced back..

The crash can happen really suddenly too.

Binbrook hasn't bounced back yet.. I was involved in doing counts back when the population was massive and it's rare to catch one now. The walleye are reproducing and the Bass are holding their own. Even the pike is nothing like it was in the early 90s and the conservation authority hasn't spent a dime to find out why the fish population has been the way it has. I was involved in stocking walleye and bass and the money was raised for that with the crappie derbies..
