Rodbender Posted August 10, 2014 Report Posted August 10, 2014 (edited) The King Fishers stayed outta camera range so I opted for the turns Edited August 10, 2014 by Rodbender
BillM Posted August 11, 2014 Report Posted August 11, 2014 Fantastic man! I've been seeing a few more of those around lately and I didn't realize they could get as big as they do.
Rodbender Posted August 15, 2014 Author Report Posted August 15, 2014 Caspians are the biggest terns we have common terns are smaller
BillM Posted August 15, 2014 Report Posted August 15, 2014 Then that's what I'm most likely seeing. Appreciate the info.
Rodbender Posted August 15, 2014 Author Report Posted August 15, 2014 NP I'd like to catch one in a dive
Dave Bailey Posted August 18, 2014 Report Posted August 18, 2014 Nice shots. Beautiful bird, with one of the ugliest calls ever. Sounds like someone being strangled while they're vomiting.
misfish Posted August 20, 2014 Report Posted August 20, 2014 Nice shooting. I love watching them while out on the toon. Also love their distinct screech. We have many here on the bay. Bill, I have seen both. Once the shinners come in the bay again this fall, you will see a mixed bag of them. I,ll have the camera rolling when they come in again this year. I caught a vid last year of them. Trying to find it. Inches from the waters surface they swoop. I have also been seeing more of the eastern gulls then those ugly ones from the city. Pure white with bright yellow/orange beaks with the crisp black tipped wings.
misfish Posted August 20, 2014 Report Posted August 20, 2014 Yes. Took this from a site. Ugly gull Beautiful gull
Rodbender Posted August 22, 2014 Author Report Posted August 22, 2014 Hi Brian do you ever get Black terns on Simcoe thats one I'm after??
misfish Posted August 22, 2014 Report Posted August 22, 2014 Cant say I have noticed. Can you share a pic? I will keep my eye out for them. Thats the nice thing about being low to the water. I get to see many birds/fowl up close. They are curious,so just flip their way over to me.LOL Going to start bringing bread with me. Should get some great close up shots. I just dont want to drop my Fuji HS10 down the water.
misfish Posted August 22, 2014 Report Posted August 22, 2014 (edited) Silly me . I found a pic. Cant say I have seen these. Where are they mostly found ? Edited August 22, 2014 by Brian B
Rodbender Posted August 22, 2014 Author Report Posted August 22, 2014 they are not rare here but not plentyfull I've seen them on Scugog and on the shore here in Ajax just thought maybe Simcoe had a population
Dave Bailey Posted August 24, 2014 Report Posted August 24, 2014 If I recall correctly, black terns are currently on a rebound from a very low population. They are widespread, so keep looking and you'll eventually get a sighting.
