BillM Posted March 12, 2013 Report Posted March 12, 2013 then I guess I got screwed I hope you didn't pay much. but yeah, that's a bit shady if you ask me...
paul_614 Posted March 12, 2013 Report Posted March 12, 2013 I hope you didn't pay much. but yeah, that's a bit shady if you ask me... the money was not the issue, this time it was more about being able to cross right away. A handfull of yes and no questions and good to go. The part that bothers me with the d/l is that there is no kind of background check ( not that I need it )
kickingfrog Posted March 12, 2013 Report Posted March 12, 2013 My understanding of the guarantor under the new rules is that if it is your first passport application the photo does still have to be signed by a professional but if you are renewing then the above standards apply.

That could be why I had to pay

Doesn't matter if it's a new passport or a renewal, guarantor requirements are the same.

BillM Posted March 12, 2013 Report Posted March 12, 2013 even 10 years ago? 10 years ago there were different rules, you needed a professional (cop, lawyer, doctor, etc)
pikehunter Posted March 12, 2013 Report Posted March 12, 2013 FOR GOD'S SAKE MAN! jUST GO TO THE GOVERNMENTS WEBSITE AND PRINT OFF THE APP! Get the requirements right from the horses mouth! Why even ask on here and listen to a bunch of heresay? ......with that said my wife, my son and I all got first time passports several years ago, and NO need for a doctor or a notary public to sign! Just signatures from those who have had one for five years and not a relative. But just check it out here http://www.ppt.gc.ca/index.aspx for the current facts and requirements. Best of luck on your international travels.
hotsky Posted March 13, 2013 Report Posted March 13, 2013 I got my passport almost 5 years ago, I know that because I just went to the States and noticed that it expires in June. Will renew for sure esp if it will be good for 10 years. It was fast and easy and I dont know why someone wouldn't want to have one.
Old Ironmaker Posted March 13, 2013 Report Posted March 13, 2013 Get a passport, an enhanced drivers license may work but it won't get you into Cuba or anywhere else where you need a passport which is everywhere post 9 11. No one can charge you to sign your passport application, I have never heard of such a thing, even at my Dr's where they want to charge you for everything, don't get me going on that. They can simply refuse. If one has had a current passport for so many years and will attest that they have known you for a period of time, can't remember exactly how long, that person can sigh the app. It's clearly explained on the application. Get a passport.

Will be nice when they're 10.
kickingfrog Posted March 13, 2013 Report Posted March 13, 2013 Not having to renew as often will be nice, but it will cost more of course, despite the fact that their processing costs will be less..
woodenboater Posted March 13, 2013 Report Posted March 13, 2013 poking around Pikehunter's link and found July 2013 is the magical date for 10 year passports. http://www.ppt.gc.ca/eppt/about.aspx?lang=eng
