Outboard Help

Hoping for some help with my late 70's Johnson 9.9 motor.

Lately it is poping out of gear at high speed, not all the time but enough to know that there

is a problem coming my way and I would like to fix if before I am stuck out on the lake.

Any ideas on what could be causing this?

linkage adjustment or detent ball and spring assembly worn out as my best guess

Check the hub on the prop. I had one like that that did the same thing, and the hub was spun out of the prop. At high speeds, the engine would rev, but the prop wasn't spinning. It was Ok at low speed.

I had a 76, 25 horse Johnson that did that, clutch dog was worn. Replaced it and the detent spring while I had it apart, problem solved.

As mentioned, it is likely the clutch dog.
