Christopheraaron Posted May 25, 2012 Report Posted May 25, 2012 Due to the weird weather this year I am not trusting any hatch charts, I know that the gnats are out and dragonflies, someone reported seeing caddisflies but are they in full swing or just starting out? I think all of the fly fishers that aren't so good at recognizing and finding these insects could greatly benefit from this.

BillM Posted May 26, 2012 Report Posted May 26, 2012 Really dependent on the rivers themselves.. I've seen stuff hatching for the past 3-4 weeks.
Christopheraaron Posted May 26, 2012 Author Report Posted May 26, 2012 Lately I've been focusing most of my efforts on the upper credit and upper humber, so probably similar to your area.
northernpike56 Posted May 26, 2012 Report Posted May 26, 2012 Lately I've been focusing most of my efforts on the upper credit and upper humber, so probably similar to your area. I know you're fly fishing, but, last summer I caught a few brown trout in the humber with mepps #0 and 1 spinners, you might wanna try that sometime
Christopheraaron Posted May 27, 2012 Author Report Posted May 27, 2012 Just got back from the humber, mepps did nothing but get hung up in trees, roe didn't work so I resorted to fly fishing, got a little brown TROUT on a brassie and lots of chub. Pics are to come. Also the dragonfly and damselfly larvae are everywhere!
Musky or Specks Posted May 27, 2012 Report Posted May 27, 2012 Ton of caddis hatching yesterday on a river around Kearney.
fish_finder Posted May 28, 2012 Report Posted May 28, 2012 For the most part, just consider everything to be 2-3 weeks ahead of schedule. Early season hatches are largely based on the number of days the water has been above X temperature for different species. Hendricksons are pretty much done now aside from upper reaches of coldwater systems. Grey fox and Green drakes are just getting started. Sulphurs are popping up here and there as well. Caddis are thick just about everywhere now. Craneflies are out and about, midges as usual.... Stoneflies have begun! Get those stimulators out! dave
fish_finder Posted May 28, 2012 Report Posted May 28, 2012 Here's a bit of whats going on in the bug world right now.... Grey Fox Dun Grey Fox Spinner Green Drake Dun Mind you, this species is on a pretty steep decline and won't be found in most streams... Green Drake Spinner Mottled Stonfly Craneflies
misfish Posted May 28, 2012 Report Posted May 28, 2012 I seen some of those crane flies on Sunday. Didnt know what they were til now. Thanks. So when I want to buy flies,I just buy them buy the name of the real fly, correct?
BillM Posted May 28, 2012 Report Posted May 28, 2012 Brian, did you check out the dry fly assortment on Reelflies.ca?
davey buoy Posted May 28, 2012 Report Posted May 28, 2012 How about a fly/insect handbook,to identify fly's to a tee. Maybe overkill I guess. B,I hope you teach me everything you know!lol.
